East Providence F.D. preparing for upgrades to stations

EAST PROVIDENCE – Fire Chief Joe Klucznik indicated Thursday afternoon that he and his firefighters are “victims of our own success.”
Here's why: Last February, he received word from Sen. Jack Reed's office that the East Providence Fire Department would be the recipient of a $5.3 million federal grant, one stemming from President Barack Obama's American Recovery & Reinvestment Act and deals with fire station construction.

PROVIDENCE – The pomp and circumstance of the opening of the General Assembly has faded away and now lawmakers are settling into the routine of legislating.
Two of the hot-button social issues expected to be near the top of the legislative agenda this session – gay marriage and illegal immigration – are already percolating in the Assembly’s first week. Woonsocket Rep. Jon Brien is playing a lead role in both.

C.F. High hits bump on road to reform

CENTRAL FALLS (AP) — The teachers at Central Falls High School struck a deal to get their jobs back last year after the entire staff was fired in a radical, last-ditch attempt to raise student performance. But if the administrators thought the teachers would be grateful for a second chance, they were wrong.
Many teachers aren't showing up for work, often calling out sick. Several abruptly quit within the first few weeks of the school year. Administrators have had to scramble to find qualified substitutes and have withheld hundreds of student grades because of the teacher absences.

Blackstone Wine & Spirits appeals city's license decision

PAWTUCKET — With some neighborhood concerns still unresolved, the ownership of Blackstone Wine & Spirits has appealed a denial of a liquor license transfer made by the City Council's Board of License Commissioners for a new location at 275 Newport Ave. to the state's Department of Business Regulation, Liquor Control Division.

PROVIDENCE — Making good on one of his principal campaign promises, Gov. Lincoln Chafee Wednesday signed an executive order revoking the controversial Illegal Immigration Control Order issued by former Gov. Donald Carcieri more than two years ago.

Jeanne Murphy was trailblazing Times reporter

PAWTUCKET — Jeanne (Rice) Murphy, who died last Thursday at age 84, had a career unlike almost any other reporter at the old Pawtucket Times.
Murphy first began working for the newspaper as a high school intern back in 1944.
“The newsroom had been decimated by World War II,” Jeanne’s daughter Sheila recalled. “The managing editor liked the way my mother wrote and offered her a job.”

Local landscaping company suing the city

PAWTUCKET — A local landscaping company has filed a lawsuit against the city of Pawtucket alleging that city officials failed to put numerous landscaping contracts out for public bid.
D.M. Bruzzi Landscape Co. Inc. filed a complaint in Superior Court on Dec. 28 naming the city as a defendant, along with city Parks Superintendent William Mulholland, Finance Director Ronald Wunschel, and Purchasing Director Joseph Roque.
