Outgoing school board chair Chellel looks back, ahead

December 29, 2010

PAWTUCKET — In his many thanks to colleagues and friends at his last Pawtucket School Committee meeting, outgoing chairman Jim Chellel gave a special recognition to the staff of Shea High School who were there from 1990 to 1994.
That's because Chellel, who graduated in 1994, credits his teachers, baseball coaches, and others at the school who helped him overcome a learning disability with being a key example of the benefits of public education and why taxpayers should not begrudge their financial support.

Man flees after attempting to rob store

December 29, 2010

PAWTUCKET — An armed man wearing a ski mask tried to rob a clerk at the Silver Mart Convenience Store at 170 Cottage St. on Friday evening, police said.
According to Major Arthur Martins, the suspect -- a white, blue-eyed male -- came into the store just before 5 p.m. He pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money from the cash register. The clerk told the robber that he didn't have any money, and then a customer happened to come into the store, at which point the suspect turned and fled without obtaining any cash, Martins said.
