Barbara M. Fontaine-Blanset
NORTH KINGSTOWN - Barbara M. (Gauthier) Fontaine-Blanset, 82, formerly of Pawtucket, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 3, 2014. She was the beloved wife of the late Walter G. Fontaine, Sr., and the late Jack Blanset. Born in Pawtucket, she was one of six children of the late Philip J. and Marie B. (Doucette) Gauthier.
Barbara worked as a CNA until retiring, she then worked as a school lunch aide in the East Greenwich School Department for several years. Barbara was an avid card player and especially enjoyed playing Bridge.
Andrew G. Czekanski, M.D.
PAWTUCKET - Andrew G. Czekanski, M.D., 93, passed away Wednesday September 27, 2014. He was the beloved husband of Irene M. (Wojnilowicz) Czekanski.
Born in Warren, RI he was a son of the late Andrew L. and Frances (Krawczyk) Czekanski.
Dr. Czekanski was a member of both the RI Medical Society and the Pawtucket Medical Society. He was a Past President of the New England Society of Clinical Hypnosis.
During WW II he served as a Captain with the 363rd Station Medical Group in the U.S. Army Air Corp.
CENTRAL FALLS â€“ Arson is considered a â€śreal possibilityâ€ť in an early-morning fire that gutted an unoccupied three-story building on Foundry Street Thursday, fire officials said.
The fire broke out at 63 Foundry St. at about 3 a.m. Thursday and required nearly 50 firefighters from Central Falls and neighboring communities to fight the blaze before it was fully under control nearly three hours later, Fire Chief Robert Bradley Jr. told The Times.
The fire is the third in six months at the property, Bradley said, with the intensity of each inferno worsening with each incident.
PAWTUCKET — During the regular season, Pawtucket Red Sox righty Matt Barnes was 2-1 in three starts with a bloated 7.18 ERA.

PAWTUCKET -- Garin Cecchini didn’t exactly crush the ball in the 10th inning Wednesday night. But his three-hop single over a drawn-in infield gave the Pawtucket Red Sox a 2-1 victory over the Syracuse Chiefs in Game 1 of a best-of-five Governors’ Cup semifinal series.
Game 2 is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Thursday with a pair of right-handers on the mound – Syracuse’s Scott McGregor (1-2, 3.91 ERA) and Pawtucket’s Matt Barnes (8-9, 3.95 ERA).
DANDRIDGE, TN - Leslie Thompson, 68, died at her home in Dandridge, TN on Friday, August 15, 2014.
Leslie, who grew up in Rhode Island, graduated from Cumberland, Rhode Island High School in 1963 and from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in Microbiology in 1967. She earned a Master's Degree in Biomedical Research from Brown University in 1970.
Margaret C. Olson
PAWTUCKET - Margaret "Peg" C. Olson, 55, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, September 1, 2014. She was the loving wife of Michael R. Dunbar. A lifelong resident of Pawtucket, she was a daughter of the late Charles H. Olson and Virginia T. (Bergeron) Andrew.
Peg was a CNA at Madonna Manor, North Attleboro for many years. She loved listening to music, caring for animals and camping. Peg lived life to the fullest and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
CUMBERLAND - Richard Bertrand, 67, of Cumberland, passed away Tuesday, September 2, 2014. He was the husband of Joyce (Marland) Bertrand. They were happily married for 44 years. Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Alfred and Lea (Duhamel) Bertrand. Richard was an insurance underwriter for 35 years, retiring in 2010. He was an army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Anthony T. Olivo
FALL RIVER - Anthony T. Olivo, 73 of Fall River, formerly of Pawtucket, RI, passed on August 28, 2014. He leaves his wife, Candice Viveiros-Olivo; 2 brothers, Richard and Joseph Olivo; his sister, the late Marion Butler.
Anthony loved colorful and crazy socks, so please select a pair at the back of the church and take that final walk with him. Put a smile on his face and attend in casual summer clothes.
Edward A. Miecznikowski
PAWTUCKET - Edward A. Miecznikowski of Pawtucket died on September 2, 2014
He was the husband of the late Laura (Paoli) Miecznikowski.
Mr. Miecznikowski was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, the son of the late Stanley and Gladys Miecznikowski. He was an auxiliary Policeman for the City of Pawtucket for many years.
Ed is survived by his daughter Mary Ann Gagnon and her husband Edmond of Pawtucket. He also leaves his grandchildren; Christopher Gagnon, Melissa Gagnon, and Nathan Gagnon and his great grandchildren, Alexander Dame and Christopher Gagnon.

PAWTUCKET – The Pawtucket Red Sox will vie for their second Governors’ Cup crown in three years when they takes on International League-North Division champion Syracuse in a five-game semifinal set to begin tonight at 7:05 at McCoy Stadium.
The PawSox earned a club-record fourth straight post-season appearance when they clinched the wild card berth on Sunday.

PAWTUCKET - Maria (Silva) Vaz, 84, of Pawtucket, passed away Monday, September 1, 2014 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of Americo R. Vaz.
Born in Videmonte, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Margarida Silva. She moved to this country in 1968, settling in Pawtucket.
Mrs. Vaz was employed as Braider-Tender for the Conrad Jarvis Inc. for many years until her retirement.
Maria was a communicant of St. Anthony Church. She loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Benjamin J. Pytka Jr
REHOBOTH - Benjamin J. Pytka Jr, 77, passed on August 30th surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Adel (Oldrid) Pytka.
He had been employed as a Letter Carrier for the US Postal Service serving the Town of Cumberland for over 40 years. He was an Army Veteran.
Ben is also survived by five daughters, Karen Martel, Wendy Burke, Gwen Pytka, Lisa Vartanian and Tammi Johnson, two step daughters, Donna Long and Doreen Voyer, 15 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren that he adored. He was step father of the late Deborah Costigan McNeile.

RUMFORD - William E. Mallon, Sr., 88, of Rumford, passed away Friday, August 29, 2014. He was the husband of Dorothy (Quinn) Mallon for more than 67 years. Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Bernard and Blanche (Jacques) Mallon.
