CF police arrest gunfire suspect

CENTRAL FALLS — Members of the Central Falls Police Department seized the eighth firearm used in a local crime this year after investigating a shooting incident in a wooded area of Ledge Street Monday morning.

The Police Department received a report from a witness at about 10:05 a.m. who indicated a Hispanic male in a white shirt had fired a handgun near the wooded area across from the municipal parking lot, according to Central Falls Police Det. Craig M. Veins.

Today is the first day the rest of the state’s high school sports teams could officially begin practice – football teams opened camp last Thursday – and prepare for the 2015 fall season.

Darlington Braves forced to tackle falling bingo attendance

PAWTUCKET — Take a drive by the Darlington Braves’ East Street headquarters nearly any day of the week, and you’ll see a modest-looking building that doesn’t look like it holds much.

Walk into that same building on a Sunday evening, and you’ll see about 250 participating in a bingo game that’s payout is only second to one other bingo game in Rhode Island: Twin River Casino.

Coal-fired taste of Ireland comes to Pawtucket

PAWTUCKET — Arigna, a village in Ireland, was home to the
island's last working coal mine.

Playing off of that, Arigna Irish Pub and Coal
Fired Kitchen - opening soon on Armistice
Boulevard - will feature all of the
aspects of a traditional Irish pub with a
menu focused on a coal-fired oven.

The property, at 507 Armistice Blvd., previously housed Carousel Sports Lounge. Ryan Blaney, chef and co-owner of Arigna
and Murphy's Law Irish Pub on George Street, purchased the property last September.

Pawtucket salutes artists with disabilities

PAWTUCKET — Twenty-five years have passed since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and it has been 40 years since the founding of VSA arts Rhode Island. Those milestones, as well as the efforts of artists with disabilities, were celebrated at a ceremony at City Hall Friday.

The first-annual Beyond Barriers celebration was held in conjunction with the Pawtucket Arts Advisory Commission and VSA arts. The Council Chambers at City Hall was at a standing-room only capacity as artists and their family members and colleagues were joined by city and state officials.

CF, Pawtucket clean up on EPA grants

CENTRAL FALLS — The Pawtucket Central Falls Development Corporation received $600,000 and the city of Central Falls received $200,000 as part of a statewide awarding of $1.32 million in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency brownfield funding.

City, state, and federal officials came together at the Central Falls Landing on Madeira Avenue Thursday afternoon to announce the grants. The money will be used for brownfield assessment, job training, and cleanup for municipalities and organizations across Rhode Island.

Pawtucket Boys & Girls Club drops 10-6 decision after late rally by Prince George’s County

GRAPEVINE, Tex. – Thursday’s doubleheader at the RBI Junior World Series got off to a rough start for the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket, which dropped a 10-6, five-inning, time-shortened decision to Prince George’s County (Maryland) Boys & Girls Club RBI.

Pawtucket’s final game of the pool-play format was scheduled late last night against Chicago. Pawtucket carried a 0-2 record into the contest.

EP council revokes liquor license

EAST PROVIDENCE — The City Council, at an emergency show cause hearing Tuesday, unanimously voted to revoke the Class B alcoholic beverage license of the controversial East Bay Tavern on Lyon Avenue.

Voting 4-0 in favor of the revocation were Councilmen Thomas A. Rose, Helder J. Cunha, Robert Britto and Tracy Capobianco. Ward 4 representative Timothy Conley was unable to attend the hearing.

Early rally helps Arizona put away Pawtucket B&G Club at RBI Jr. Series, 8-2

GRAPEVINE, Texas – The RBI team from Arizona scored two runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back en route to posting a 10-2 win over the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket at the RBI Junior World Series on Wednesday.

Driver escapes injury when Central Falls sinkhole swallows pickup

CENTRAL FALLS – A North Providence man was safely rescued after his truck fell into a sinkhole at the intersection of Hunt and Liberty streets Tuesday, fire officials said.

A large water main break had covered the road with water and just prior to noon, a truck driven on Hunt Street by Joe Antunes of North Providence fell into the large hole in the street. The front of the truck fell into the hole and the two rear tires remained on the street.

Manager Matt Bergeron just told them, not to mention their teammates, to “Keep your eyes on the prize.”

Osborne and pals bring 'Magic' to McCoy

PAWTUCKET — It was a big Monday afternoon at McCoy Stadium, with lots of stars from the sports and entertainment industries helping to make the venerable ballpark shine just a little brighter.

They all came to raise money for singer and Providence native Jeffrey Osborne and his charitable causes. Osborne also received an additional spike in generosity from the Pawtucket Red Sox Charitable Foundation. The PawSox took their proceeds from the softball game and donated them to the Jeffrey Osborne Foundation.

Pawtucket event takes big swing against arthritis

PAWTUCKET – When Edd Pedro’s daughter Kelsey showed improvement after receiving treatment for juvenile arthritis 12 years ago, he decided he had to find a way to give back.

And that way turned out to be an annual tournament for those who love the simplified version of baseball know as Wiffleball.

The latest edition of Pedro’s “Fight for the Cure Mega Raffle and Wiffleball Tournament was held on Sunday at the Slater Park’s Boathouse field and drew a large gathering of both kids and adult practitioners of the sport to help the juvenile arthritis cause.

BRISTOL, Conn. — It was an All-Connecticut Northeast Regional championship game.

In a wild game, host team Bristol eliminated Upper Deck Post 86/14 in walk-off fashion, 9-8, in 12 innings Sunday afternoon to set up a rematch of Saturday night's Bristol vs. Connecticut champion RCP-Cromwell game, which saw Bristol prevail by a 3-2 count.

BRISTOL, Conn.  -- Upper Deck Post 86/14 is playing on Championship Sunday.

The Rhode Island champions bounced back from their blowout loss to Connecticut champ RCP-Cromwell Friday night with a taut, 3-1 win over Rochester, N.H. in the Northeast Regional American Legion tournament saturday at Muzzy Field.

"We have a veteran group," said coach Steve Reynolds Jr. "The kids are gamers and they didn't come out flat. I'm proud of the way they showed up ready to play. This was a very nice team victory."

PawSox, Speaker hint stadium deal is near

PAWTUCKET — A spokeswoman for the Pawtucket Red Sox confirmed that a modified proposal for a new Providence ballpark being worked on by state negotiators should be completed in the next few weeks, if everything goes to plan.

“We’re making good progress,” Patti Doyle said. “The House Speaker says we can complete the deal in the next couple weeks, and I think that’s certainly realistic.”

The renegotiated deal is said to be “a lot more favorable to the taxpayers,” according to House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello’s spokesman, Larry Berman.

PAWTUCKET – After celebrating two phenomenal International League Governors' Cup championships over the previous three years, the Pawtucket Red Sox won't come close this summer. They bid adieu to a possible playoff berth several weeks ago.

In fact, after manager Kevin Boles' crew dropped a 4-0 decision to Syracuse on Thursday night at McCoy Stadium, Pawtucket had not only suffered four straight defeats, but 15 of its last 19 overall and 20 of its previous 24 road tilts.
