LINCOLN - Donna L. Gilkenson-Smith, 62 died Wednesday at Sturdy Memorial Hospital, Attleboro, Ma. She is survived by her significant other Larry Goucher.
Born in Pawtucket a daughter of Ruth (Jefferson) Gilkenson of Lincoln and the late Raymond Gilkenson. She lived in Mansfield, Ma. for the past thirty-four years.
She was a registered nurse at the VA Hospital, West Roxbury, Ma. for the past thirty-eight years.

LINCOLN - Florence M. Perron, 92, passed away April 14, 2011. She was the wife of the late Alfred L. Perron. Born in North Providence, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Laura Lefebvre. Mrs. Perron was a long time communicant of Holy Spirit Parish in Central Falls. She enjoyed playing bingo at The Holiday in Manville, where she resided.

The problem with Red Sox fans is they don’t know how to deal with slow starts. During the Terry Francona Era, their favorite team has never been worse than 28-24 on June 1. That mediocre beginning, which looks downright red-hot compared to this season’s 2-9 start, occurred in 2005. Yes, Boston rebounded to make the playoffs that year, bowing to eventual champion Chicago White Sox in the Division Series.

Sales tax plan is dead

PROVIDENCE — Gov. Lincoln Chafee’s plan to radically overhaul the state’s sales tax structure is effectively dead.
After more than six hours of nearly unanimous testimony denouncing Chafee’s proposal to lower the state sales tax from 7 to 6 percent and broaden it to a vast array of goods and services that are now exempt, House Speaker Gordon Fox had heard enough.

Born March 15, 1960 in Rhode Island, she was the daughter of the late Phillip and Leah (Desmarais) Piette.
Annette received her bachelor's Degree in Microbiology from Rhode Island College. She was self-employed as a Sign Language Interpreter for 7 years. Annette was a member of NIC Master Interpreter, RIDS and V.P. of Compudoc of Hanover. She also operated a website called FidosCorner.com.

CUMBERLAND - Jared M. Audette, 37, of Diamond Hill Road died unexpectedly Monday, April 11, 2011 at home. Born in Claremont, NH, the beloved son of Lucille C. (Benoit) Gince of Cumberland and Ronald M. Audette of Lincoln, he had lived in Cumberland for most of his life.
He was a 1993 graduate of Cumberland High School.

Tigers too much for SRA softball

PAWTUCKET — It seems like a lifetime ago, but it was only four seasons ago when St. Raphael Academy was competing for the Division I championship and Tolman High was joining the fastpitch ranks and looking to build a successful Division III program.
Fast forward to 2011. The Tigers are now one of the Division II’s top teams. After going 50-3 and winning the 2008 state championship in their three years as a Division III squad, the Tigers made a smooth transition to Division II last season by going 13-7.

Born April 3, 1916, in Barre, VT, she was a daughter of the late Warden and Annie (Jaffa) Saliba and lived in RI most of her life.
She is survived by her daughter, Catherine E. Thibeault and her son, William J. Armstrong, both of Pawtucket; her grandchildren, Sandra Pelletier and Michael Frenche of Pawtucket; 3 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Born in Woonsocket, a daughter of the late Charles A. and Kathleen (Angell) Jarvis, she had lived in Pawtucket for 50 years before moving to Lincoln 16 months ago.
She was a member of Smithfield Avenue Congregational Church, Pawtucket.

She was the wife of the late William T. McDuff Jr.
Born in Providence, the daughter of the late James and Alberta (Woodard) Ives, Mrs. McDuff is survived by her children; William T. McDuff III of East Providence, Frederic D. McDuff of Warwick, Joan Alexandre of Seekonk Ma, and Penny Herchen of Barrington. Mrs. McDuff also leaves nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

John enjoyed gardening, boating and fishing.

CENTRAL FALLS - Amanda Salinas, 82, of Mary Street peacefully passed away on Tuesday surrounded by her loving children. She was the wife of the late Pastor Mariano Salinas.
She was born in Valdivia, Antioquia, Colombia, a daughter of the late Jesus M. Peneda and Ana Teresa Quiros. She and her family moved to Rhode Island several years ago.
She leaves a son Edgar Alvaro Salinas of Pawtucket, 2 daughters, Nancy Beltran of Florida and Edith Diosa of No. Providence; 8 Grandchildren and 6 Great Grandchildren.

PROVIDENCE — The new school funding formula passed by the General Assembly last year has been hailed by educators, public officials and parents as a vast improvement in the way Rhode Island pays for its public schools. But at least two local communities claim it is inadequate to the point of being unconstitutional because it shortchanges poorer school districts.

PAWTUCKET - Nelson H. Rene, Jr., 75 of Pawtucket died Saturday at Orchard View Nursing Home in Riverside. He is the beloved husband of Louise (LeFrancois) Rene. Born in Pawtucket, Nelson was the son of the late Nelson Rene and Anna (Solotki) Rene. He was a lifelong resident of Pawtucket.
Nelson served in the Army in the Korean War and was a Social Worker for the Department of Children Youth and Families for 4 years until his retirement.

PAWTUCKET - SPC Dennis "Danny" Cullen Poulin, 26, passed away surrounded by his parents, son and aunts on Thursday, March 31, 2011 in Landstuhl, Germany, from injuries sustained on March 28th in Konar Province, Afghanistan, while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. He was a Mortarman with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 181st Infantry Regiment of the Massachusetts Army National Guard.
