Tolman's "Iron Five" knocks off C.F.

CENTRAL FALLS – Call them the Iron Five. They are Tolman’s Justin Zetina, Napoleon Johnson, Mamour Samb, Jonathan Percy and Brandon Gagne, a group of Tigers who played every minute of Tuesday’s important Division II clash with Central Falls.
With suspensions forcing head coach Mike Kayata to shrink his playing rotation, the Tigers rode the same cast of the players from the opening tip to the final buzzer. Tolman gutted out a much-needed 65-53 win on C.F.’s home floor, one that signaled the end of a four-game losing streak for the Tigers.

Central Falls, Woonsocket YMCAs to merge

WOONSOCKET — YWCA Northern Rhode Island, located at 514 Blackstone St., will merge with the faltering Central Falls-based YWCA of Greater Rhode Island in a deal expected to be finalized by March 1.
“This is not a hostile take-over,” said Deborah Perry, president and CEO of YWCA Northern Rhode Island. “We’re both in favor,” and the news is in the ambitious plans she has for the new YWCA Rhode Island.

Born in Pawtucket, RI, Merle was the daughter of Evelyn and Isadore. Merle was a long time Pawtucket resident but recently resided in Foxboro near her sons.

LINCOLN - Gabriel M. "Gabe" Fortin, 77, died Saturday, January 28, at home. He was the husband of the late Lois B. (Vivier) Fortin.
Born in the Albion village of Lincoln, a son of the late Wilfred and DiNora (Metivier) Fortin, he was a lifelong resident of the village.
Mr. Fortin was a schoolteacher for the Central Falls School Dept. for over thirty-five years, and was a graduate of St. Michael's College, Vermont.

DeLand, FL - Mr. Ronald W. "Hank" Burke, 75, of DeLand passed from this life on Friday, January 27, 2012. Ronald was born on May 10, 1937 in Attleboro he was the son of the late James H. and Muriel D. (Brown) Burke. He moved to DeLand in 2003 after retiring from CSR Rinker in South Florida.
His Favorite Hobby was building and working on his 1934 Cabriolet. He was a veteran having served in the Navy.

Ex-RI Gov. Garrahy eulogized at funeral Mass

PROVIDENCE (AP) — Former Rhode Island Gov. Joseph Garrahy has been remembered as a man who lived humbly and set an example for others.
The Rev. Marcel Taillon remembered Garrahy at a funeral Mass on Tuesday morning as a man of faith who rose from humble beginnings.
Taillon, the pastor at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Narragansett, delivered the homily at a service at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence.
Garrahy died last week at a hospital in West Palm Beach, Fla. He was 81.

Tigers embark on 'must win' stage of season

Two high school hoops games stand out above the rest tonight. And they’re both Division II crossover contests.
Tolman, 4-7 with seven games left in the regular season, visits Central Falls (6-5) in the first meaningful game. The Tigers seek to end a four-game losing streak that has jeopardized their playoff hopes. Those hopes were not helped on Monday when leading scorer Juan Velez (20.8 points per game) and starting forward Seny Samb, a solid defensive player, were suspended for violating school disciplinary rules.

Clippers return to mat after staph infection scare

CUMBERLAND — After surviving a staph infection scare that shut down the Cumberland High wrestling program for a week, the Clippers return to the mat this week for a pair of tough matches with La Salle Academy and Cranston West.
“Every match we have from here on out is going to be tough,” Cumberland coach Steve Gordon admitted on Monday. “Next week, we host unbeaten Hendricken and the week after that we visit Warwick Veterans. Both of those teams are state title contenders.”
Gordon is just happy to have his team wrestling again.

PAWTUCKET — At about 5 p.m., Friday, Jan. 13, Adam Tumlinson had been making his way home to his Darlington neighborhood when he heard his cell phone jingle.
“It said, ‘Restricted,’ so I was very hesitant to answer it,” Tumlinson stated recently between sips on a coffee at an Armistice Boulevard doughnut shop. “I usually don’t answer numbers I don’t recognize, but for some reason I picked it up anyway.”

She lived in Pawtucket several years before moving to East Greenwich, She had been employed at the former Balfour Co. as an inspector. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mercy Parish and formerly of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs (St. Mary's) Seekonk.

Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of Everett Wilkinson and the late Cecilia (Dougdale) Adams.
She had been employed as a CNA for over 20 years at the former Jewish Home of the Age. She was a member of the American Legion Post 25, Pawtucket.
She is survived by a daughter, Candace Wilkinson, and a son Shawne Duval, 2 sisters, Michaela and Angela Wilkinson, a brother, Kenneth Wilkinson and 4 grandchildren. She was the sister of the late John Wilkinson.

Maurice E. Berube has spent the better part of 11 years trying to promote and practice the four cardinal virtues of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. But it wasn't until last month, when he found himself the recipient of a simple act of kindness by an 11-year-old city girl, that he really understood what it meant to be an Elk.
Berube, Grand Exalted Ruler of Woonsocket Elks Lodge #850, says it happened in December when he was helping deliver 227 food baskets to needy families during the holiday season.

Tolman falls to E.P., but comes back to top Scituate

PAWTUCKET — Brandon Speight popped in a pair of first-period goals on Sunday afternoon to lead Tolman past Scituate 4-0 in a makeup game played at Lynch Arena and the third contest in a 48-hour span for the Tigers.
Kody Casavant and Jared Pedro finished the scoring for Tolman with second-period goals, and goaltender Stephane Meunier stopped 19 shots for his fourth shutout of the season.
Tolman improved to 7-4 in Division III with an overtime loss to unbeaten Johnston/North Providence on its ledger. Those 15 points place the Tigers second in the division behind JNP (10-0-0).

WOONSOCKET --- Tolman sure didn’t look like a team that hadn’t played a game in 21 days on Friday night.
The Tigers, who received three-goal games from Kody Casavant and Jared Pedro, scored five goals in the first 10 minutes of play and cruised to a 10-1 win over winless Woonsocket in their Division III matchup at Adelard Arena.
The Tigers, who improved to 6-3, also received a pair of assists from Kevin Tracey and Casavant, who currently leads the league in scoring with 19 goals and 10 assists.
