PAWTUCKET - Dorothy "Dot" E. (Stewart) Lafond, 94, left the Earth peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, August 24, 2014. She was the beloved wife of the late Delphis "Del" E. Lafond. Born in Pawtucket, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Abbie (Northup) Stewart.

EAST PROVIDENCE - Gertrude E. Driscoll, 89, formerly of East Providence, died Friday. She was the beloved wife of the late James E. Driscoll.
Born in Rehoboth, MA, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Katherine (Mort) Dengal.
Mrs. Driscoll enjoyed antiquing, knitting, and ceramics.
Surviving are two children, Christine A. Driscoll of South Kingstown and John H. Driscoll of San Diego, CA; and nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Emily Brisson, Joseph Kraemer, and Frieda Dengal.

CUMBERLAND - Stacia M. (Podgurski) Kuzdeba, 96, formerly of Woodland Street, passed away Sunday at St. Antoine Residence, North Smithfield. She was the wife of the late Joseph Kuzdeba.
Born in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Strzempek) Podgurski. She was a life-long resident of Cumberland.
Mrs. Kuzdeba was employed as a Packer for the former Corning Glassworks Company of Central Falls for many years until her retirement.
She was a communicant of St. Aidan Church.

McGair: Bradley demotion a case of bad timing

PAWTUCKET – On the surface, Jackie Bradley Jr. is handling his reassignment to the PawSox just fine.

“When you don’t perform to the best of your capabilities, it’s not a surprise,” the centerfielder acknowledged while recently standing in front of his locker inside the PawSox clubhouse.

Having a thick skin has undoubtedly served Bradley well in a season where nothing has gone right offensively. He credits his upbringing for providing him with a foundation of confidence that he says keep slumps and critics at bay.

PAWTUCKET - Ida E. (Jacques) Fournier, 89, passed away on Friday, August 22, 2014. She was the beloved wife of the late Clement J. Fournier. A lifelong resident of Pawtucket, she was a daughter of the late Ralph and Ida E. (Langlois) Jacques. Ida was a member of the Lamb of God Prayer Group for over twenty-five years.

PAWTUCKET - Pauline R. (Lussier) Halliday, 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 22, 2014. She was the beloved wife of the late James "Bud" E. Halliday, Jr. A lifelong resident of Pawtucket, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Noe Lussier and Emma (Carrigan) Lussier. Pauline was employed by the State of RI School Lunch Program for over twenty years until retiring in 1996. She enjoyed playing cards and was an avid golfer.

PAWTUCKET – Having recently retired from a career in x-ray technology, Kathy Moore found herself with the urge to continue to provide a valuable service.

However, the resource she is hoping to contribute will extend far beyond Pawtucket, and even the United States, as she is seeking donations to purchase needed x-ray technology for people in Sokode, Togo, in western Africa.

'Sword' of angry: Man faces three felony assault charges

PAWTUCKET – What began as a verbal dispute soon escalated into an attempted physical assault on Wednesday, when a city man tried to attack three people who were standing at the corner of Allen Avenue and Cottage Street with a Samurai sword, police said.

Timothy Greve, 28, was charged with three counts of felony assault after he approached the trio of neighbors wielding the weapon.

PASCOAG - Brother René J. M. Chenard, S.C., 90, of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Provincial House, Pascoag, RI, died August 15, 2014 at Overlook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Pascoag, RI. Born in Lewiston, ME, he was the son of the late Joseph and Emilia (Therriault) Chenard. Brother René died on the 70th anniversary of his first religious profession.

PAWTUCKET - L. Mildred "Millie" Hanley, R.N., 92, of Pawtucket, RI and Mashpee, MA passed away on August 19, 2014. She was the wife of the late Joseph M. Hanley. Born in Hyde Park, MA, Millie was the daughter of Willard and Lillian (Moxham) Barnett, and sister of the late Willard Barnett. After completion of nursing school, Millie served as a Navy nurse during WWII. She was employed at the Pawtucket Memorial Hospital and was a school nurse - teacher in the Pawtucket School Department until retiring.

He was a self employed painter/contractor.
He is also survived by his maternal grandmother Theresa (Fontaine) St. Pierre; son Ethan Stevens; daughters Alexandria, Raevin and Isabella Stevens; sister Stephanie Stevens; uncle Leonard and his wife Katherine St. Pierre; aunt Elaine Bedard; nieces Madison and Makensie Stevens and several cousins.

City man charged with drug dealing near schools

PAWTUCKET – Complaints from neighbors helped local police zero in on a man who was allegedly selling cocaine near two schools Friday morning.

Mauricio Guzman, 30, is held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions, Cranston, after police seized 19 grams of cocaine from his second-floor apartment at 290 Lonsdale Ave.

Undercover narcotics officers obtained a warrant to search Guzman’s apartment Friday after opening an investigation based on neighbors’ complaints about after-hours visitors and high foot traffic at the residence, according to Major Arthur Martins.
