CUMBERLAND - Richard F. Kachuk, 76, passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2014. He was the beloved husband of Darlene A. (Fasulo) Kachuk for 46 years. Born in Putnam, CT, he was a son of the late William and Yvette (Champagne) Kachuk. Richard enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends, he especially enjoyed spending time with his four grandchildren, Richard, Riley, Jake and Nicole.

Pawtucket Soup Kitchen to honor individuals, businesses

PAWTUCKET – With each of them carrying on the legacy of Ernie Marot and his selfless efforts to end hunger, a collection of individuals, businesses, and state agencies will be honored as part of the Pawtucket Soup Kitchen's second annual Ernie Marot Humanitarian Awards and fundraising dinner Friday.
According to the Adrienne Marchetti, the soup kitchen's executive director, the five honorees at Friday's gala are: Irving Basiliere, Dr. Michael Ragosta, Navigant Credit Union, Pawtucket Credit Union, and the state Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Man bites brother's ear off

PAWTUCKET – A man had a big chunk of his ear bitten off by his brother after complaining that his sibling drank all the alcohol in the house and hadn’t left any for him, according to police.
Melvin S. Gboe, 35, of 950 Main St., was arrested Monday on charges that include domestic felony assault, mutilation, resisting arrest and misdemeanor domestic assault, according to police reports.

BROWNINGTON, VT - John Emanuel Johnson, 75, died October 9, 2014, at his home in Brownington, VT. John, a longtime resident of Pawtucket, RI, was the loving father of four children - Cathy Tupper of Cape Coral, FL; Jan Eve Johnson of Wayland, MA; Virginia H. Johnson of N. Attleboro, MA; and John E. Johnson of Pawtucket, RI. John is also survived by his mother, Rita Johnson, of Greenville, RI; his brother, Bertil Johnson, of N. Scituate, RI; his sister, Linda Molack, of Coventry, RI; and his two grandchildren, Angelina M. and Isabella Eve Johnson, of Pawtucket, RI.

Tolman girls' volleyball | With 10 straight wins, the Tigers are dominating D-II

To be reunited, it took a passion that wouldn’t fade and the devotion of a handful of sympathetic coaches. Her story is a reminder that sometimes, the well-worn phrase “love of the game” actually means what it says.

PAWTUCKET - Mabel G. (DesRoches) Kelleher, 78, passed away with her husband by her side on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 after many years of illness. She was the beloved wife of Paul B. Kelleher for 27 years and the late Kenneth Brown. Born in Somerville, MA, she was a daughter of the late Theodore, Sr. and Helen (Lane) DesRoches.
Mabel was the nursing payroll clerk at Memorial Hospital of RI for 17 years until her retirement in 1998. She enjoyed collecting Swarovski Crystal; reading; knitting; crocheting and completing word searches and crossword puzzles.

CUMBERLAND - Joan B. Roskowski, 81, of Cumberland, passed away Friday, October 10, 2014. Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Dorothy (McCaffrey) Demers. Joan lived most of her life in Pawtucket.
She is survived by two children, Tom Roskowski, and Cathy Calcagni, two sisters, Dorothy Demers, and CarolAnne Dragon, and six grandchildren, Alexander, Erica, Stasha, and Brandon Roskowski, and Chelsea and Mikaela Calcagni. She was the mother of the late David Roskowski and sister of the late Cornelius "Neil" Demers.

Feldman Furniture building to be converted by Nexus into luxury apartments

PAWTUCKET – Standing at the corner of Broad and North Union streets, the old Feldman Furniture warehouse is undergoing some serious renovations, and the prodigious three-story red brick building could house upwards of 25 luxury apartments in the future.

The 66,000-square-foot three-story mill building was sold to Nexus Property Management LLC on July 3 for $175,000, according to records with the city Tax Assessor’s office.

Tolman High Football | Tigers take down defending D-II champs West Warwick, 15-13

WEST WARWICK — Tolman ended West Warwick’s 13-month unbeaten at Maznicki Field thanks to two long runs, some solid defense and an unplanned two-point conversion.
 
The Tigers and Wizards were knotted at 13 following a seven-yard touchdown run from junior Jacob Vargulish with 5 minutes, 47 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The Tigers lined up for the extra point, but the snap was poor and Vargulish had to improvise.

Raiders start strong before holding on to top Vikings

PAWTUCKET -- Shea jumped out to a 10-0 lead after one quarter before holding on to defeat Division II-A rival Rogers, 23-21, Friday night at Max Read Field.

Anthony Almeida scored on a 12-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to provide the Raiders with the deciding. Yanique Duarte caught a 45-yard touchdown for Shea and also ran for a 3-yard score. Shea, which led 17-14 at halftime, improves to 2-1 in league play.

CHEPACHET - Josephine (Lopes) Nickerson, 60, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014 in RI Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of William Nickerson, whom she married Aug. 7, 1976. They resided on Putnam Pike in Chepachet. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine (Silva) Lopes.
Josephine was a self employed bookkeeper and homemaker. She was a very active member of St. Joseph's Church, serving as a former CCD Teacher and Choir member.

'Big Brother' to host meet-and-greet at C.F. school

CENTRAL FALLS – Fresh off his recent victory in the hit reality television series “Big Brother”, a city police sergeant will participate in a meet-and-greet and question-and-answer session with the public at Central Falls High School Friday.
Sgt. Derrick V. Levasseur, 30, of Providence, was named victorious at the conclusion of the show's Sept. 24 season finale, outlasting 15 other house guests over the course of the show's 16th season to win the $500,000 grand prize. “Big Brother” airs nationally on CBS.

Pawtucket man tries to flee from police

BOSTON — A Pawtucket man who pleaded guilty in September to conspiracy to traffic contraband cigarettes, among other charges, was captured aboard an airplane at Logan Airport in Boston that was about to depart for Paris, authorities said.
