Eulalia Fontaine

PAWTUCKET - Eulalia Fontaine, "Lolly", 90, of Pawtucket, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, August 5, 2014. She was the wife of the late Leo Fontaine. Born in Wallingford, CT, she was the daughter of the late Alberto and Maria Rosa (Albuquerque) Ferreira.
She is survived by two daughters, Denise Fontaine, and Deborah Asermely, a brother, Edward Ferreira, and three granddaughters, Nichole, Christine, and Andrea Asermely.

Roland P. Genereux

GLOCESTER - Roland P. Genereux, 91, passed away peacefully at home. He was the devoted husband of Therese B. (Saucier) Genereux for 67 years. Roland was born in Canada, the son of the late Emile and Albertine (Coutu) Genereux; he was a longtime resident of Pawtucket before moving to Glocester.
Roland was a Teamster Truck Driver, Local 251 for 40 years before retiring in 1980. He was also a co-owner with his wife of the T House Hair of Fashion in Pawtucket for 50 years.

LINCOLN - Alina Goncalves, 92, passed on August 5th. She was the wife of the late Alzino Vaz
Born in Fogo, Cape Verde Island, a daughter of the late Pedro Goncalves and a daughter, Eugenia Alves.
She is survived by 6 sons, Alberto Vaz, Domingos Vaz, Bendavid Vaz, Olavo Vaz, Pedro Vaz, and Carlos Vaz, a daughter, Isabel Vaz, 31 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren a sister, Lidia Goncalves.
Her funeral will be held Saturday at 8:30am in the Keefe Funeral Home, Five Higginson Ave, Lincoln with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Anthony Church, Lawn Ave, Pawtucket

PAWTUCKET – When reached early Sunday afternoon, Jim Mello admitted he's had a lot on his mind over the previous few days.

Ever since his Collette Vacations Post 79 squadron captured its first-ever R.I. American Legion Senior Division Tournament title with back-to-back 8-2 and 9-6 victories over the Newport-area's R&R Construction last Wednesday at McCarthy Field, he's had to prepare loads of paperwork.

In fact, he mentioned he was still trying to complete all of the necessary forms on his kitchen table.

Cumberland American absorbs first loss of summer

BRISTOL, Conn.  –  Cumberland American’s All-Stars had inflicted a lot of pain to opponents with three walk-off hits on their road here to the A. Bartlett Giamatti Little League Leadership Training Center.

PAWTUCKET - Corrigan, Claudia Chaves, of Dania FL and formerly of Pawtucket, died July 31, 2014 at Memorial Regional Hospital South. Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of Manuel H. Chaves of Texas and the late Patricia (Oliva) Chaves.
Claudia was Vice President of a nonprofit organization A Child is Missing.
In addition to her father; she is survived by her brother Philip M. Chaves of Texas, an aunt, uncle and cousins.

PawSox catcher always seems to have a 'Spring' in his step

PAWTUCKET – Matt Spring is a career minor-league catcher who gets it.

You won’t find his name mentioned in the same way as acclaimed youngsters Christian Vazquez and Blake Swihart, two under-25 prospects who are viewed by many as potential catchers-of-the-future for the rebuilding Boston Red Sox.

Meanwhile, Spring sits three months shy of his 30th birthday, and is in the midst of his first extended stay at the Triple-A level with the PawSox.

Cumberland American shows no mercy again

BRISTOL, Conn.  –  Lightning struck twice for the Cumberland American All-Stars on Monday night.

After pasting Massachusetts champion Barnstable, 25-5, in its opener on Saturday, the bat-savvy Rhode Islanders strolled to a 10-0 “mercy-rule” victory over Goffstown, N.H. in another pool-play contest of what is becoming a terrific Little League New England Regional Tournament at Breen Field.

Police: Cigarettes, pirated DVDs seized

PAWTUCKET – Police seized contraband cigarettes and suspected pirate DVDs after raiding a Broad Street convenience store Friday, they said.
The co-owners of RI Market 2, Mahmoud Najib and Ghassub Hasim Aljandali, both of Cranston, were charged with one count each of the sale of unstamped cigarettes; forgery; importation of cigarettes with the intent to evade taxes; and conspiracy.

Step-father of Debra Durant, Robert Gilbert, David Gilbert and the late Nancy Grace and Michael Walters. Brother of Edward Bourgault, Jr., Nancy Wunschel and his late twin, Robert Bourgault. He also leaves 22 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

NORTH ATTLEBORO - Mary A. Burda, 90, passed away Sunday August 3, 2014 on her birthday, at the Coastal Manor Nursing Home in Yarmouth, Maine where she had been a resident since October 2013. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph B. Burda.
Born in Pawtucket, RI, she was a daughter of the late Felix and Annie (Pryziemski) Ladisz. She lived most of her life in North Attleboro, MA before moving to Maine in 2005.
Before retiring in 1986 Mary was an office clerk for Univis Frame Co., of North Attleboro, for 10 years and Arbeka Webbing, of Pawtucket, RI for 9 years.

CUMBERLAND - William P. Glad, 37, of Cumberland passed away in an accidental drowning in New Hampshire on Friday, August 1, 2014.
Born in Providence, he was the beloved son of Thomas and Connie (Bergeron) Glad. He was a life-long resident of Cumberland.
Billy was a Cumberland High School, Class of 1995 graduate. He was a varsity captain of the Hockey and Football teams.

PAWTUCKET - Theresa O. (Gaudette) Hull, 98, passed away Friday, August 1, 2014. She was the beloved wife of the late Frank E. Hull. A lifelong resident of Pawtucket, she was a daughter of the late Victor and Olivine (Duchesne) Gaudette. Theresa proudly served her country as a welder during World War II. She was employed by the Conrad-Jarvis Manufacturing Company, Pawtucket for 27 years before retiring as a supervisor, and enjoyed spending time at the Leon A. Mathieu Senior Center.

PAWTUCKET - Raymond Arnold, 70, passed on August 2nd. He was the longtime companion of Irene Strunk,
He had been employed as a truck driver for over 45 years.
He was the son of the late Walter E. and Helen (Carpenter) Arnold.
Ray is also survived by a daughter, Donna Arnold, three brothers, Joel, Robert and George Arnold, a sister, Nancy Alix and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Earl, Walter and Charles Arnold.

PAWTUCKET - Robert H. Carroll, 69, passed on August 2nd. He was the husband of Christine (Mendoza) Carroll and brother of Barbara (Carroll) Ouelette.
Born in Central Falls on October 10, 1944, he was a son of the late Rita Chenot and Wilfred Wildgoose. He later was adopted by the late John and Phyllis Carroll.
Bob served in the US Navy.

Gomes, Minea recognized for leadership by BOA

PAWTUCKET — Only 225 high school juniors and seniors from across the country, and only five from Rhode Island, were chosen to participate in the Bank of America Student Leaders program this year.

Thanks to their hard work and dedication to their communities, Ryan Gomes and Monitea Minea, were two of those students.

Gomes, a recent graduate of the Jacqueline M. Walsh School, and Minea, a senior at the William E. Tolman School, were both selected to participate in the program based on their extensive service work.

Official: KR Baseball Academy coming to Lincoln

LINCOLN – The association of Ken Ryan’s name and this particular dateline can only signify that KR Baseball Academy is officially coming to town.

 

Everything became certified this past Friday when Ryan signed a lease to occupy space for his indoor baseball facility on 100 Higginson Ave. located in the Lonsdale section of town. A Pawtucket native who pitched for both the PawSox and Red Sox, Ryan hopes to open the doors either the first or second week in October.

 

Importance of good sportsmanship not lost on Cumberland American

BRISTOL, Conn. -- On the evening of Thursday, July 24, after the Cumberland American All-Stars had clinched the R.I. Little League Major Division (11-12) Tournament championship with a thrilling 8-7 victory over gritty Cranston Western, manager Dave Belisle’s crew lined up for the usual post-game handshakes with its foe.

Gary Bucci’s players couldn’t have been all too happy with the loss, but both teams’ athletes  were seen high-fiving each other. It was the consummate exhibition of sportsmanship at its best.
