PROVIDENCE — For the second straight season the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team’s senior class will graduate without knowing what it feels like to beat archrival Providence College.
PAWTUCKET â€” A city man was charged with domestic assault by strangulation and domestic felony assault Tuesday after he choked his girlfriend, fled their apartment, then returned a short time later and began prodding her with a knife, authorities said.
According to police Maj. Arthur Martins, around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Niran A. Morales, 18, was involved in an argument with his girlfriend regarding the pairâ€™s relationship. During the squabble, Morales â€ślashed out at her,â€ť putting his hands around her neck and choking her, Martins said.

CUMBERLAND - Rhonda Lee Smart, 51 of Main Street passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of Gregory J. Reynolds. Born in Woonsocket she was the daughter of James G. Smart and his wife Linda Denosky-Smart of Exeter and Sharon Casey of Florida.
PAWTUCKET - Frank Balkum, 88, passed away December 9, 2014. He was the beloved husband of the late Lillian A. (Pitera) Balkum. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Vincente and Boleslawa (Niedswicki) Balkum. He lived in Pawtucket for the past 60 years.
Before retiring he was employed by General Electric as an accountant for 38 years. Frank was a Navy Veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Polish organization PAMBA.
Mary E. Karaniuk
PAWTUCKET - Mary E. Karaniuk, 91, passed away Wednesday December 10, 2014. She was the beloved wife of the late Walter Karaniuk.
Born in Cumberland she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Helen (Nimnic) Marchick. She lived in Pawtucket for 30 years and was formerly of Lincoln.
Helen was a member of the Polish Young Set.
PROVIDENCE â€“ The state announced some $3.85 million in open space grants this week for conservation and recreation projects in 15 communities, including Lincoln, Burrillville and Pawtucket.
Lincoln was among the biggest winners in the open space sweepstakes, taking home $400,000 to acquire a 50-acre parcel of undisturbed, forested land abutting the Handy Pond Recreation Area, off Old River Road. The addition of the land would enlarge the recreation area to over 300,000 acres, according to Albert V. Ranaldi Jr., the town planner.

MENDON, MA - Clara May (Briggs) Ribeiro, 76, of Mendon died December 8 at her residence after an illness.
She was born in Norton, MA; daughter of the late Ernest & Ida (Burgess) Briggs. She was raised in Norton and Attleboro and was a graduate of Attleboro High School. She attended business college majoring in accounting. Clara had been employed as an accountant for Teknor-Apex in Pawtucket and later Texas Instruments. She retired in 2003.
Clara was a member of the First Congregational Church in Milford and participated in Bible study there.

Dallas used the 3rd quarter to put this game out of reach. After a tightly contested first half the score was 14-7 in Dallasâ€™ favor. Dallas was able to use an early second half turnover to score a 24 yard touchdown pass from Tony Romo to Cole Beasley. They used great field position to tack on 2 more touchdowns before the end of the 3rd quarter to make the score 35-7. Chicago made the game somewhat close thanks to a 21 point fourth quarter of their own, but it was too little, too late.

PAWTUCKET â€“ More than $9,000 in cash was seized from the motor vehicle of a Massachusetts man, who later bit the hand of a police officer who yanked over five grams of heroin from his mouth.
Orlando Rosas-Rodriguez, 41, of Taunton, is facing charges of possession of heroin with intent to deliver; assaulting a police officer; and third-offense possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver, according to Detective Major Arthur Martins.
PAWTUCKET - Raymond Rocheleau, 81, died on December 3, 2014.

POMPANO BEACH, FL - Annette Doris Brouillette, 93, passed away on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at North Broward Medical Center in Pompano Beach, FL.
Annette was born in Woonsocket, RI and had been a resident of Vero Beach for 25 years, coming from Pawtucket, RI.
Raymond P. Maynard
CENTRAL FALLS - Raymond P. Maynard, 86, of Central Falls died peacefully Sunday, December 7, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Laure R. (Audette) Maynard. Mr. and Mrs. Maynard celebrated their 61st anniversary this past July 11.
A lifelong resident of Central Falls, he was a son of the late Eugene U. and Sylvia T. (Petit) Maynard.
Lucinda Dos Anjos
PAWTUCKET - Dos Anjos, Lucinda, age 95, died December 5, 2014 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Jose Dos Anjos. Born in Holyoke, MA, she was a daughter of the late Simon and Feleciana (Maria) Martins.
CENTRAL FALLS - Frank Zalomski, 87, passed away Saturday December 6, 2014. He was the beloved husband of the late Arlyne M. (Osenkowski) Zalomski.
Born in Wodniki, Poland he was a son of the late Jozef and Maria (Turowska) Zalomski. He lived in Central Falls for the past 57 years.
Before retiring he was employed by the former B.I.F. Industries for many years.
Frank was a Korean War Veteran serving as a PFC with the U. S. Army 82nd Engineers. He was a member of the Fierlit Korzen A.L. Post #79 and the Pulaski Mutual Aid Society both of Central Falls.
CENTRAL FALLS â€” A special election will be held this spring to fill an unexpired term on the City Council now that At-large Councilwoman Shelby Maldonado is preparing to leave for her new job at the Statehouse.
Maldonado, who is in the first year of her first three-year term on the seven-member council, is the new Democratic state representative-elect for District 56, a seat held formerly by Agostinho Silva.
CRANSTON – Buoyed by a three-touchdown day from halfback Andrew Howard and a shutout second-half by their defense, Moses Brown prevailed against Shea High, 28-14 in Sunday's Division II Super Bowl.
