Cumberland American soaking up TV exposure

Their game on Monday night against Chicago's Jackie Robinson West will be Cumberland American’s seventh straight on television. It will also be the team’s fourth consecutive appearance on the national networks of ESPN.

Not a big deal? Consider this contrast, then.

The NBA’s Boston Celtics, whose schedule was just recently announced, are slated for only one nationally televised contest for their entire upcoming season. Cumberland’s Little Leaguers beat that slim total in just a weekend.

PAWTUCKET – Ivy Duffy, 76, of Providence, got a taste of Greek culture while taking a sailing cruise through the Greek islands with her husband Charlie last year, and figured to add to her experiences with a visit to the Grecian Festival at Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church on Sunday.

Her interest was also heightened by her friendship with a dance teacher, Andrea Vastis, who helps run the Greek Pride of Rhode Island dance troupe starring at the Walcott Street church’s 87th annual festival.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — As 10,732 eyes stared at him and millions more watched worldwide, Cumberland’s shortstop/pitcher CJ Davock blocked it all out.
 
It was just he and the pitcher. The frustration of an inning earlier was gone. An opportunity awaited and redemption was at hand.
 
Davock pounded on it, earned it and kept a dream alive.

EAST PROVIDENCE – Police yesterday released a description and composite sketch of the man they believe shot 42-year-old shop owner Yusef A’Vant to death in his Pawtucket Avenue barbershop on Wednesday afternoon.

East Providence Police Chief Christopher J. Parella said investigators are looking for a black male believed to be in his late 30s to early 40s, who is approximately 5-foot-11 tall and weighs approximately 180 pounds. He was wearing a camouflage jacket at the time of the shooting

Three suspects arrested in drive-by shooting

PAWTUCKET – No one was injured and three people were arrested Wednesday night after a reported shooting incident outside an apartment building on John Street, police said.

At approximately 6:20 Wednesday night, police received several calls from people who reported hearing gunshots near an apartment building at 48 John St. and seeing a black Lexus fleeing the scene.

The Cumberland American Little League is back at the Little League World Series for a second time in four years. And this time it thinks it can stay a little longer.

CENTRAL FALLS - Benvinda Fontes, "Vinda" 59, passed away on August 12th. Born in Brava, Cape Verde, she was the beloved wife of the late Francisco A. Fontes and the daughter of the late John Correia and Domingas Rocha.
As a loving and caring mother, she is survived by a son, Manuel Fontes, a daughter, Michell Fontes and a grandson, Jose Gabriel Fontes, all of Central Falls. She is also survived by her siblings Idilia Cosme. John Correia Jr, Estella Barbosa, Autilia Dylan and Lydia Nelson along with numerous nieces, nephews, friends and family.

EP barber fatally shot in shop

EAST PROVIDENCE – A well-known local barber was fatally shot in his Krazy Kuts business at 2400 Pawtucket Ave. Wednesday afternoon, a killing that has put residents of the neighborhood on edge.

Yusef Avant, 42, who has previously been listed as living in an apartment at the 2400 Pawtucket Ave. property, was shot inside the shop, and was transported by rescue to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to East Providence Police.

As the players and coaches in the Cumberland American are discovering this week, there’s nothing little about the Little League World Series.

On the surface, competing in this grand spectacle – how else would you describe an event that includes participants hailing from around the country and the world? – can seem overwhelming. ESPN cameras are practically everywhere, which CALL manager Dave Belisle hinted at earlier this week upon stating, “All of the eyes of the world are on Williamsport.”

PAWTUCKET - Florence (Allen) McKinnon, 93, passed away on Monday, August 11, 2014. She was the beloved wife of the late Allan McKinnon for 60 years prior to his death in 2003. Born in Central Falls, she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Fannie (Hill) Allen.
Florence was a 1938 graduate of Central Falls High School, and was employed as a bookkeeper at the Carol Cable Company, Pawtucket for many years until retiring in 1990.

PAWTUCKET - Barbara E. (Ventresca-Major) Campbell, 74, Born in Augusta, Maine on 11-16-39 to the Eva 'Pearl' (Morin) Ventresca and George Ventresca Sr. (both now deceased) and had a wonderful relationship with her stepfather, James E. Major of Lincoln, RI.
Barbara moved from Maine to Lincoln, RI in her early teen years. She enjoyed Saturday night roller skating, winter ice skating, spinning records...especially Elvis Presley, country music and summer beach days with her daughters. Barbara worked at Coats Field department store and School House Candy in Pawtucket, RI.

Lincoln bank robbed again

LINCOLN – Police are investigating the second armed robbery of the Bank of America at 611 Smithfield Ave. in four months after a man entered the branch Monday afternoon and demanded money while threatening a teller with a handgun, according to police. 
 
Lincoln Police Captain Philip Gould said the police department received a call from the branch at 3:55 p.m. reporting an unidentified male had walked in and pulled out a black handgun before demanding money from the bank teller.

CUMBERLAND - Mary A. Cardozo, 92 of One Mendon Road, passed away Tuesday in the Grandview Nursing Center, Cumberland. She was the wife of the late Ezekiel Cardozo.
Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late Jose and Isabel (Sanchez) Machado.
She lived most of her life in Cumberland.
She was employed by the A.T. Cross Company, Lincoln, retiring in 1984.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Cumberland.
Mary was a member of the Cumberland Lions Club.
