CUMBERLAND — It was only a holiday tournament championship game. Another non-leaguer in December. Both Woonsocket and Tolman High will have bigger fish to fry during the league seasons that begin in earnest next week. Still, the intensity and emotion displayed during Saturday night’s Holiday Classic title contest was worthy of a playoff game in March.
CENTRAL FALLS â€“ Police are investigating what may turn out to be the cityâ€™s second homicide of 2014 after discovering the body of a Providence man with a head wound on Christmas Day.
The body of Cheikh Diop, 41, was found lying on the ground in front of 17 Parker St. about 6:30 p.m. Police said Diop had apparently somehow suffered a severe laceration to the head.
Police have also charged a man with obstruction while investigating the death, according to wire reports.

CUMBERLAND – Tolman High made short work of Lincoln in the opening game of the 42nd annual Holiday Classic hosted by the Boys & Girls Club of Cumberland/Lincoln.
The Tigers converted eight three-point field goals during a 61-38 triumph that put them into tonight’s championship game against Woonsocket, which dispatched host Cumberland in Friday’s nightcap, 84-55.
LAUREL D. COULOMBE
PAWTUCKET - Laurel D. Coulombe, 87, of Pawtucket, passed away Monday, December 22, 2014. She was the wife of Armand Coulombe. Born in Central Falls, she was the daughter of the late Wilfred and Albina (Baril) Trottier.
Besides her husband she is survived by five children, Paul, Richard, Robert, and David Coulombe, and Debra Gorman; two brothers, Frank and Maurice Trottier; one sister, Olive Gibbons; seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She was the great-grandmother of the late Alexis Coulombe.
JANE F. NICHOLSON
PAWTUCKET - Jane F. Nicholson, 79, of Pawtucket died on December 25, 2014. She was the wife of James P. Nicholson.
Mrs. Nicholson was born in Pawtucket, the daughter of the late Wallace A. and Lola Baker. She was a relocation consultant for United Van Lines for many years.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Nicholson is survived by her sons, Kevin S. Nicholson and his wife Romy Sue of North Kingston, and Scott Nicholson of Pawtucket. She also leaves her brother Donald Baker and her three grandchildren.
RITA J. MENARD
PAWTUCKET - Rita J. Menard, 82, passed December 20th with her loving family by her side. She had been employed by AT Cross, attended RISD, was a sales rep for Stanley Home Products and was an avid bingo player.
As is always the case following a Christmas Day full of gift-giving, unwrapping, eating and celebrating, area coaches and their teams will attempt to get back into the competitive mode this weekend at a variety of holiday tournaments.

PAWTUCKET — Parents, family members and friends hailed the conquering heroines in style at the Darlington Braves' bingo hall last Thursday night.
As the announcer introduced each member of the Braves' 15-and-under competitive cheerleading squad, those in the crowd hooted and hollered loudly, and for good reason: The previous Saturday afternoon at the Lakeland Center in Lakeland, Fla., head coach Nicole Dupont's contingent landed itself the grand championship at the American Youth Cheer National Championships.
CUMBERLAND — In his 48th year of involvement with the Cumberland High wrestling squad, 47 of them as the head coach, Steve Gordon has seen his fair share of ebbs and flows -- that is, outstanding seniors moving on to college, as a result having to rely on newcomers to fill those empty slots.
In others, the loss was minimal, and that plentiful experience led his crew to four state titles and other solid team placements.
Ernest V. Beaulieu
CENTRAL FALLS - Ernest V. Beaulieu, 54, passed on unexpectedly on December 14th.
He was the son of
Heliane (Brodeur) Beaulieu and the late Albert Beaulieu.
Ernie is survived by his siblings, Albert Beaulieu, Diane Corneau, Denise Lavoie, Jeanine Bascom, several nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was the brother of the late Paul Beaulieu.
Diane J. Standring
PAWTUCKET - Diane J. Standring, 65, passed away on Tuesday, December 23, 2014. A lifelong resident of Pawtucket, she was a daughter of the late Norman E. and Cora T. (Benoit) Standring.
Rita E. Bedard
PAWTUCKET - Rita E. "Rit" (Bergeron) Bedard, 77, passed on December 22nd. Born in Pawtucket, she was the wife of the late Donald A. Bedard to whom she was married for 48 years. Rita was the daughter of the late Laurence Bergeron-Malloney.
Helen M. Keegan
PAWTUCKET - Helen M. Keegan, 84, of Hillside Avenue, died Wednesday evening, December 17, 2014, at Summit Commons Rehabilitation & Health Care Center. She was the wife of the late Frederick T. Keegan, Sr.
Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Stephen and Annie (Lipay) Boick.
Helen worked in the office of A & Z Chain Company for several years before retiring.
She leaves a daughter, Karen J. Dunbar, of Pawtucket, and four loving grandchildren. She was also predeceased by her son, Frederick T. Keegan, Jr.
