EAST PROVIDENCE â A Bristol man and registered sex offender was arraigned in District Court Providence Thursday, where he pled not guilty to charges that inappropriately touched a 10-year-old girl at the Healthtrax Fitness & Wellness swimming pool.
Raymond J. Dubord, of 50 Monroe St., Bristol, was charged with simple assault after the grandmother of the girl filed a complaint with the East Providence police on July 18. According to the complaint, Dubord was constantly trying to talk to the girl and exchanged phone numbers and that there was âunwanted touchingâ involved.
John R. Ayers
CUMBERLAND - John R. Ayers, 80, of Cumberland, died Wednesday at home. He was the husband of Zenna (Gwozdz) Ayers. They had been married 59 years. Born in Pawtucket, he was a son of the late John H. and Doris C. (Dempsey) Ayers.
Mr. Ayers was a self employed and union carpenter for many years. He was a member of the Carpenters Local #51. He enjoyed golfing.
Wanda G. Winslow
CUMBERLAND - Wanda G. Winslow, 93, of Cumberland died Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at Pawtucket Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation, Pawtucket.
A lifelong resident of Cumberland, she was a daughter of the late John and Stephanie (Bozek) Winslow.
Miss Winslow was a textile worker for several textile companies in Pawtucket and Central Falls for many years before she retired from Crown Textiles in Central Falls
She is survived by one sister, Monica Winslow and one brother, Frank J. Winslow, both of Cumberland; and several nieces and nephews.
PAWTUCKET â Police are investigating an attempted armed robbery after a man showed up at the hospital Tuesday afternoon with a gunshot wound to the foot, they said.
Marquis Hopper, 20, of Pawtucket, suffered a small-caliber bullet wound to the foot and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, said Major Arthur Martins. He is expected to be okay.
Dorothy A. Audette
CUMBERLAND - Dorothy A. Audette (Desrochers), 94 of Pawtucket and formerly of Central Falls died peacefully at Grandview Center, Cumberland on Monday, July 21, 2014. She was the devoted wife of the late Emile O. Audette for 68 yrs. until his death in 2010. She was the daughter of the late George and Blanche (Couture) Desrochers.
KR Baseball Academy is on the move after a successful 10-year run in Pawtucket.
Though nothing is official, the owner hopes everything regarding the academy’s new Lincoln location will be signed, sealed and delivered by the middle of next week. More specifically, Ken Ryan plans to inhabit space on 100 Higginson Ave., which is situated in the Lonsdale section of town.
CENTRAL FALLS â An unprecedented community collaborative to tackle truancy and chronic absenteeism in the cityâs public schools kicks off next month and City Councilwoman and School Committee member Stephanie Gonzalez is leading the charge.
The idea for the Back to School campaign was hatched in the spring by the newly-formed Central Falls Alumni Association, which has partnered with the school district to reach out and involve school, community and municipal stakeholders, including School Superintendent Frances Gallo, Mayor James A. Diossa and Police Chief James J. Mendonca, to name a few.
PAWTUCKET - Janice "Jan" (Drake) Box, 85, of Pawtucket, died peacefully Sunday, July 20, 2014 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of Joseph J. Box, DDS.
Born in North Brookfield, MA, a daughter of the late Leonard and Mabel (Chadbourne) Drake, she had lived in Pawtucket for over 50 years and summered in North Falmouth, MA for over 50 years.
Frank V. Paine, Jr.
MANVILLE - Frank V. Paine, Jr., formerly of Manville, entered into rest July 17, 2014 at Oakland Grove Health Care Center, Woonsocket. He was predeceased in 2009 by his wife of fifty-two years Claudette A. (Paulison) Paine. Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Frank V., Sr. and Mabel (King) Paine.
LINCOLN â A fire breaking out in a motor vehicle inside Georgeâs Towing and Auto Repair at 25 North Crow Point Road Monday afternoon caused heavy damage to the metal commercial building and non-life threatening injuries to three local firefighters working to put it out.
Police Capt. Philip Gould said the department received a call from an employee at 25 North Crow Point Road reporting fire inside the building at 1:12 p.m.
âThey were working on a vehicle inside the building and the vehicle caught fire,â Gould said.
The running joke between Bob Walsh and Antone Gray became a rite of spring.
Whenever Walshâs name was linked to prospective Division I menâs basketball head coaching jobs, he would receive a reminder from a player who never seemed to stray too far from the mentorâs mind. Gray first placed the bug in Walshâs ear during their point guard/coaching partnership at Rhode Island College. He continued to do so after his graduation in 2011.
âEven when Antone was a sophomore playing for me, he would say, âDonât leave me here, donât leave me here,â Walsh recalled.
CUMBERLAND — Even dating back to last summer, skipper Dave Belisle had a feeling his Cumberland American Little League All-Stars wouldn't have much of an issue with the bats.
But even he's surprised with how his roster of 12 has produced this time around.
Consider these statistics: In four straight triumphs over Smithfield (11-3) and Lincoln (9-6) in the R.I. District IV Major Division (11-12) event, then two more against Coventry American (5-4) and Cranston Western (17-4) in the state tournament, his squad has outscored its opponents, 42-17.
Thomas L. Jassak
CENTRAL FALLS - Thomas L. Jassak passed away Saturday, a week before his 88th birthday. Born in Providence, a son of the late Thomas Jacob Jassak and Carolina (Zrudlowska) Jassak. Mr. Jassak was a lifelong resident of Central Falls and had been employed as a school teacher in the Central Falls School system for 38 years, retiring in 1986. He was a graduate of Providence College, a former clerk to several Senatorial Committees and was a member of the Mount Moriah Lodge #8 F & AM and was a past treasurer of the Polaski Society of Central Falls.
Raymond J. McNulty Jr.
PAWTUCKET - Raymond J. McNulty Jr. 81, entered into eternal rest on Thursday after a 4 year illness. He was the beloved husband of Mary Jane "Midge" (Collins) McNulty and had been married 58 years. He was born in Providence, a son of the late Raymond J. McNulty Sr. and Marion (Jones) McNulty-Buzzerio.
Doris E. Carr
ENFIELD, CT - Doris E. (Martin) Carr, 94, of Enfield, CT and formerly of Swansea, MA, entered into eternal life on Friday (July 18, 2014) at St. Joseph's Residence in Enfield, CT.
Doris was born on Aug. 7, 1919 in Fall River, MA, daughter of the late Harry J. and Margaret E. (Friery) Martin. In 1942 she was married to James E. Carr, he preceded her in death in 2007.
She was a longtime resident of Swansea, MA, Pawtucket, RI and the past 15 years in Enfield.
BRISTOL – Sean Meers clubbed two homers, drove in five runs and scored three on Sunday as Cumberland American delivered a 17-4 mercy-rule bushwhacking of Cranston Western's best in a winners' bracket final at King Philip Little League's Roger W. Pigeon Field.
CENTRAL FALLS â For Luis Munoz of Cumberland, Sunday was a special day for Colombians that should also be celebrated with members of the Colombian-American community.
âWe are going to celebrate our independence day,â Munoz said as he and his wife, Andriana, and their daughter, Ashley, headed into the Colombian American Cultural Festival at the Higgins Avenue Recreational Complex on Sunday.
âToday is Colombiaâs 204th Independence Day,â he said.
BRISTOL – When Cumberland American standout Addison Kopack launched a one-out, opposite-field “tater” over the right-center field fence to tie Coventry American, 4-4, in the bottom of the sixth – as a result forcing extra innings – Lincoln All-Stars' manager Charlie Hien responded as only he could.
“Honestly, it's like they have nine lives,” he said, shaking his head. “That team just doesn't quit.”
The Cumberland American All-Stars begin play Saturday in the Rhode Island State Little League Major Division Championship, their first appearance there since 2011.
