Cumberland wins big in bracket final

July 8, 2014

WESTERLY – Losing the pregame coin toss was the only thing that didn’t go well for the Cumberland I Major Division Softball All-Stars on this night.

They pounded out 15 hits to post a convincing 11-6 victory over Warwick West Side Tuesday night in a Rhode Island State Tournament losers’ bracket final. Cumberland will return to the Paul E. Trombino Memorial Complex on Wednesday (5:30 p.m. first pitch) to face Cranston National.

Grenade discovered, bomb squad called

July 8, 2014

PAWTUCKET – An apartment building on North Bend Street was evacuated Tuesday after a grenade was discovered by a cleaning crew in one of the apartment units, police said.
Maj. Arthur Martins, spokesman for the Pawtucket police, said a sewer leak in the apartment unit prompted the building manager to call in a cleaning crew, which discovered the grenade as well as a handful of bullet shells.
According to Martins, the RI State Police Bomb Squad was called to the scene and quickly determined that the grenade and rounds were not live.
