The Rhode Island Thunder Gold 12U-Needle are the 2014 PONY National Champions after the team won the PONY Fast Pitch Softball Nationals in Sterling, Va., held the week of July 18-23.
The team, composed of players from both Massachusetts and Rhode Island, had a phenomenal run throughout the season, with had a phenomenal run this season, with an overall record of 71-4-1.

PAWTUCKET - Shirley M. (Quick) Shiflett, 75, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday evening, July 30, 2014. She was the beloved wife of Dennis E. Shiflett for fifty-eight years.
Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, the daughter of the late James and Lizzie (Moyer) Quick, she resided in Pawtucket over forty years.
Besides her loving husband, she leaves two sons, Ricky E. Shiflett and his wife, Kelly of Pawtucket and Michael W.Shiflett of Woonsocket.

CUMBERLAND - Elizabeth A. "Bettie" Hogan (Coleman), 79, passed away Monday, July 28, 2014 at Mt. St. Rita Health Center, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph J. Hogan.
Born in Cumberland she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Elizabeth (Crozier) Coleman. She was a lifelong Cumberland resident.
Mrs. Hogan was employed by the Secretary of State's Office for 32 years retiring in 1998. She was a communicant of St. Patrick Church, Cumberland.
John A. Fleming, Sr
PAWTUCKET - Fleming, John A. Sr., "Johnny Ajax" (Olneyville John #1), 71, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 27th. He leaves his loving wife Linda (Bruce) Fleming, four children John A. Fleming, Jr. of Warwick, Deborah Potter of Pawtucket, Eric Fleming of Providence, Patrick Fleming of Warwick; his stepdaughter, Crystal Bruce of Providence and 10 grandchildren.
He was born in Providence the son of the late Edwin and Gertrude (Mann) Fleming; brother of the late Norman Mann and Bob Mann. John was a cousin to Davey Lopes of the L.A. Dodgers.
SOUTH ATTLEBORO - Joan (Dutra) Soufy, 71, of South Attleboro, passed away peacefully July 28, 2014.
She was the beloved wife of Charles J. Soufy, Sr.
Joan was born in Providence, a daughter of the late Alfred and Mary Dutra.
Mrs. Soufy was a seamstress, by trade, and owned S & S Sewing for five years. She also worked at her son's auto body shop for the last 10 years.

CUMBERLAND - Antonio Lopes, 95, of West Barrows St. passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, Saturday July 26, in The Holiday, Manville. He was the beloved husband of the late Otelinda (DaSilva) Lopes.
Born in Insua, Penalva do Castelo, Portugal he was the son of the late Lourenco and Maria Lopes. He came to this country in 1960, settling in Cumberland.

CENTRAL FALLS - Normand Levesque, 86, passed on July 25th. He was the husband of Rhea (Collignon) Levesque. They have been married for 61 years.
He was the son of the late Adolphe and Leopoldine (Pelletier) Levesque and was a lifelong Central Falls resident.
Normand had been employed as Lace Draftsman for American Textiles, RI Lace and Seekonk Lace for over 40 years before retiring. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War.

PAWTUCKET - Dolores J. Teixeira, 82, of Pawtucket, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2014. She was the wife of the late Carlos Teixeira. Born in Seekonk, MA, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Alice (Verfaille) Amaral.
She is survived by her children, Kevin and Scott Teixeira, and Karen LeClair, three grandchildren and two great granddaughters. She was the sister of the late Ronald Amaral.
