LINCOLN --- The official announcement came during the second week of January, but Dick Ryan didnât realize that he received one of high schoolâs most prestigious coaching honors until late last week during his first visit of the year to Lincoln High.
âWe had our spring coaches meeting,â recalled the Lionsâ softball coach. âI stopped into (athletic director Brian Finebergâs) office and he told me, âHey, congratulations.â I said, âFor what?â and he said, âYou didnât get this?â and he showed me a copy of a letter that was in my mailbox at the school.â
PAWTUCKET â Thanks in part to some incident-mapping software and new ideas that help police assess where to best employ resources, the city has seen a more than 10 percent reduction in crime from last year.
Statistics compiled by the Pawtucket Police Department and reviewed by the R.I. State Police for inclusion in the national FBI crime database show an overall drop in crime in the city of about 10.3 percent for 2013, including significant declines in several major categories.

PAWTUCKET - A. Dorothy (Berlinsky) Jacobs, 74, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 1, 2014. She was the beloved wife of Napoleon Leon Albert Jacobs and the late Albert E. Hamel. Born in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Sidney S. Berlinsky and Mary (Winters) Tierney.
Dorothy worked at McConnell & Carpenter, Pawtucket, for many years until her retirement. She enjoyed listening to music and reading; spending time at home with her family, and participating in various activities with the seniors group at Rumford Towers.
Gladys D. Jaworski
PAWTUCKET Gladys D. Jaworski, 90, passed away Sunday March 2, 2014. She was the beloved and devoted wife of the late Dr. Rudolf A. Jaworski Sr.
Born in Ludlow, MA she was a daughter of the late Jan and Josephine (Chlastawa) Duda. She lived in Pawtucket for the past 65 years.
A graduate of St. Joseph's School of Nursing, Gladys was a registered Nurse. She was a supporting citizen of the Polish American Community being an active Member of the Rhode Island Polonia Scholarship Foundation for many years. She was an parishioner of St. Joseph's Church of Central Falls.
Allan G. Battersby
CENTRAL FALLS - Allan G. Battersby, 73, passed peacefully at home on March 2nd. He was the husband of Joyce (Mocogni) Battersby. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past May. He was the son of the late Arthur and Jeanette (Bechard) Battersby.
Allan proudly served in the U.S. Coast Guard; he was a hardworking man, a dedicated father, a loving grandfather and an avid fisherman.
Edith F. Lima
PAWTUCKET - Edith F. Lima, 82, passed peacefully on March 2nd at home with her family by her side.
Born in Sao Antao, Cabo Verde, a daughter of the late Augusto and Aurora Lima.
Alfred J. Menard, III
SOUTH YARMOUTH - Alfred J. ("Fred"/"AJ") Menard, III, 80, passed away at home on Friday, February 28, 2014.
Born in Manville, he was the son of the late Rhode Island House Speaker, Alfred U. Menard, II and Flora (Lessard) Menard. He was the husband of Roxanne L. (Masson) Menard, RN, formerly of Shawinigan Falls, SUD, P.Q. Canada, and was a resident of South Yarmouth, MA.
Kevin J. Lessa
CENTRAL FALLS - Kevin J. Lessa, 53, formerly of Washington St. and he also lived on Japonica St. in Pawtucket, passed into eternal rest on Monday at the Home & Hospice Care of RI, after an illness. He was born in Pawtucket, a son of Shirley A. Jackson and the late Albert N. Lessa.
Kevin had been employed at B & E Chrome Plating for 30 years until he was stricken with a stroke.
Doris L. Slavin
LINCOLN - Doris L. (Sherman) Slavin, 96, formerly of Lincoln, died Saturday, March 1, 2014 at the Lydia Taft House, Uxbridge, MA. She was the wife of the late D. Howard Slavin.
Born in Pawtucket, a daughter of the late S. Eber and Jennie P. (Hammond) Sherman, she had lived in Lincoln for over 50 years. She was a direct descendant of seven families, including John Alden, which came over on the Mayflower.
Agnes A. Colvin
PAWTUCKET - Agnes A. (O'Neill) Colvin, 101, of Pawtucket passed away on March 1, 2014.
She was the beloved wife of the late Samuel Colvin.
Born in Darwen Lancaster, England, the daughter of the late James and Agnes (Bolton) O'Neill. She was the secretary to the President of the former Metals and Controls and then worked in medical transcription at the Pawtucket Memorial Hospital for many years.
Edward J Kelly Sr.
DIGHTON, MA - Edward J Kelly Sr. of Dighton Ma passed away Tuesday 2/25. Ed, better known as "Buck" was born on June 24, 1930.
Predeceased by his oldest daughter, both Buck and Karen Allen will be lovingly
remembered by his daughter Karlene and her husband Richard Bourque, his son Ed and his wife Louise, his youngest daughter Rhonda and her husband Michael Thomas, and his son in law Steve Allen.
His stories will be missed by his grandchildren Jennifer, Stephany, Ashlee, Justine, Tracie, Taylor and Kathleen.
