PAWTUCKET â€”Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin has filed a notice in Superior Court that his office will seek life without the possibility for parole in the case against Jorge DePina, who is charged with the murder of his 10-year old daughter last summer. Full story in Wednesday's Times.
Rose Marie Baxter
CENTRAL FALLS - Rose Marie Baxter of Central Falls died on Monday, January 27, 2014. She was the loving wife of Scott C. Baxter.
Mrs. Baxter was born in Pawtucket, the daughter of the late Theodore and Marie (Pageau) Renchan. She was a certified nursing assistant for Jewish Family Service for many years.
Alfred E. Deschenes
LINCOLN - Alfred E. Deschenes, 84 of Lincoln, died Monday at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center in Providence. He was the husband of Anita J. (Labare) Deschenes. Born in Central Falls, he was the son of the late George and Leda (Lague) Deschenes. He was a Lincoln resident for 52 years.
Prior to his retirement Alfred worked as a Machine Operator for Texas Instruments in Attleboro, MA.
PAWTUCKET Maria Tokarz, 91, passed away Sunday January 26, 2014. She was the beloved wife of the late Walter Tokarz.
Born in Luslawice, Poland she was a daughter of the late Jan and Ludwika (Duda) Jurek. She lived in Pawtucket for the past 61 years.
Before retiring She was employed as a Weaver in the Blackstone Valley area for many years.
She was member of St. Joseph's Church Holy Rosary Society and a member of the Polish National Alliance Lodge 677.
PAWTUCKET â€“ There will be no playoffs for the Tolman High football team in 2014.
On Monday, Tolman High Principal Christopher Savastano went before the Rhode Island Principalsâ€™ Committee on Athletics in hopes of getting the group to repel the decision of banning the Tigers from postseason play for one season.
On Tuesday, Interscholastic League Executive Director Tom Mezzanotte informed Savastano that the punishment would indeed stand.
CENTRAL FALLSâ€”The federal court hearing for former Central Falls Mayor Charles Moreau, related to a review of his case that could possibly lead to an early release from prison, has been moved to Thursday, Jan. 30, at 9:30 a.m.
Moreau, imprisoned in Maryland on a corruption charge, will appear for a status conference before U.S. District Court Judge John J. McConnell.
PAWTUCKET - Rita Kleniewski, 86, passed away Sunday January 26, 2014 at Pawtucket Memorial Hospital.
Born in Pawtucket she was a daughter of the late Walter and Jennie (Widenski) Kleniewski. She was a life long resident of Pawtucket.
Before retiring in 1988 she was employed by the U.S. Army Mapping Service for 35 years. She was a member of St. Teresa of the Child Jesus Church Seniors.
Rita is survived by nieces and nephews.
Wilfred R. Cottrell
CUMBERLAND - Wilfred R. Cottrell, "Ron", 75, of Cumberland, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014. He was the beloved husband for 45 years of Elizabeth (Laig) Cottrell. Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Wilfred and Margaret (Walsh) Cottrell.
Ron enjoyed playing golf and was a former member of the Country View Country Club.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a brother, David W. Cottrell and nieces and nephews.
Antionette M. Smith
PAWTUCKET - Antionette M. Smith (Biondo) 58, of Pawtucket, died January 26, 2014. She was born in Providence. She was a daughter of the late Joseph A. and Iola M. (McGowan) Biondo.
She is survived by her five children, Mark Smith of Pawtucket, Kevin Smith of Virginia, Daniel Smith of Fall River, Markea Smith of West Warwick and Nohelea Smith of Cranston; Two sisters Joann M. Lopes of Cranston and Carol Gill of Cranston; twelve grandchildren; longtime companion David Lopez and sister of the late Shirley Gomes.
Roger S. Sherman
LINCOLN - Roger S. Sherman, 86, of Woodward Road passed away peacefully Friday, January 24, 2014 at home. He was the devoted husband of his sweetheart, the late Jean C. (Bushee) Sherman for 62 years. A lifelong resident of Lincoln, he was the son of the late E. Sidney and Esther (Foster) Sherman.
Harold S. Prew
BARRINGTON - Prew, Harold, S., "Hal," 45, of Zephyr Lane, died unexpectedly on January 25, 2014 surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was the beloved husband of Wendy (Hughes) Prew.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his children; Benjamin J. Prew, Abbigayle C.L. Prew and Zachariah J. Prew, all of Barrington.
