Thumb surgery behind him, Alex Wilson sets sights on regaining role in Boston's bullpen

PAWTUCKET – Eventually, Alex Wilson arrived at the understanding that his ability to properly grip a baseball had been compromised.

What was originally deemed a sprained right thumb last July evolved into something far more problematic to the point where surgery went from a potential last resort to being inevitable. Wilson admitted that everything “was tried under the sun.” From having the thumb placed in a cast and later a splint, all of the precautions taken were done with an eye toward eventually returning to Boston’s bullpen.

Best Buddies bring together student mentor, special needs youths

When Rhode Islanders begin helping out the Meeting Street School with its annual telethon on WPRI Channel 12 Jan. 25, they will be funding, in part, programs for the school’s students that build relationships with students at other schools and the community at large.

One of those programs, Best Buddies, gained the limelight for last year’s fundraiser, as it brought in over $809,000 in nonoperational support for Meeting Street, a sum the school hopes to top this year, according to Meeting Street spokeswoman Amanda Mullen.
