CUMBERLAND - A. Louise Rivard, 82, of Cumberland and formerly of Pawtucket and Largo, Florida, passed Saturday at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center, Providence. She was the wife of the late Eugene Gene Rivard. Born in Lincoln, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Susan (McKeon) Dunn.
Louise was employed as a bookkeeper for Adams/Brooks Drugs Offices for many years prior to her retirement. She and her husband enjoyed line and square dancing.

PAWTUCKET - William J. Prestly, Jr., 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 6, 2013. He was the beloved husband of the late Rita A. (Pettit) Prestly.
Born in Pawtucket, he was a son of the late William J., Sr. and Margaret (Cormier) Prestly. He was a US Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. William worked as a dispatcher for Gilbane Oil Co. for over 20 years until his retirement and was a member of the MORA Club of Pawtucket, LeFoyer and the Gatchell VFW Post # 306.

CUMBERLAND - Lucille (Hamel) Mann, 70, of Bryant Street, passed away Friday at home. She was the wife of the late Ronald C. Mann.
Born in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Maurice and Mary Rose (Prince) Hamel. She was a life-long resident of Cumberland.
Mrs. Mann was employed as an accountant and office manager for the CTA Inc. of Attleboro, Souza Brother and Dimayo of North Attleboro.
She was a communicant of St. Patrick Church, Cumberland.

CUMBERLAND - Maria Lurdes Martins: 89 passed on January 6th. She was the wife of the late Estevao Mata: Born in the Madeira Islands of Portugal, Maria was a daughter of the late Joao and Francisca (Cezar) Martins. She had been employed by Murdock Webbing for ten years.
She is survived by four daughters, Maria Julia Vieira of Central Falls, Theresa Simoes of Florida, Fatima Teixeira of Cumberland and Celina Marques of Cumberland, a son, Placido Mata of South Africa, eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Jose is survived by five children Joaquim Santos, Guilhermina DosSantos, Antonio Andrade DosSantos, Joao DosSantos and Daniel Andrade DosSantos, one sister Joanna Baptista Santos, seventeen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

PAWTUCKET - Linda A. Peltier, 65, of Pawtucket, passed away Saturday, January 05, 2013. She was the wife of Donald Peltier. They were happily married for 35 years. Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary (Bucka) Goodwin. Mrs. Peltier was staff coordinator in the medical industry for 25 years, retiring in 2011.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her children, Donna Perry and Andrew Peltier. She was the sister of the late Eileen "Pat" Normandin.

Two shot at city gas station

PAWTUCKET (AP) — Pawtucket police are investigating the shooting of two men at a local gas station.
Police say they responded to a report of shots fired at a Sunoco station on School Street shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday. But the victims were gone by the time officers arrived.
Authorities say the two men later showed up at different hospitals seeking treatment for gunshot wounds that were not life-threatening.
The men's names haven't been released. It's not clear why they were shot.
Police are looking for several cars seen around the gas station at the time of the shooting.

Sledders can't let safety slide

CUMBERLAND — Kids and young adults love to see snow falling during the winter because it can result in lots of fun on local sledding runs.
But as the sledding tragedy in Providence showed all too clearly last Wednesday, sledding in the wrong spot or in icy conditions can be very dangerous and even result in fatal injury.
The sledding accident at Neutaconkanut Hill Park in Providence that claimed the life of Alexandria Alvarez, 17, sparked safety reviews of many popular sledding spots around the state and the closing of the Neutaconkanut Hill at least until surface conditions improve.

WOONSOCKET --- Cumberland received a pair of goals from John Wainwright and outshot Middletown by a near 2-to-1 ratio on Friday night, yet the Clippers found themselves defeating the Islanders by a narrow 3-2 score in their Division II crossover affair at Adelard Arena.
The Clippers, who are 5-2, outshot the Islanders (3-3) by a 49-25 count, but had their problems putting the puck past Middletown goalie Dennis Turano, who ended up with 46 saves.

Pawtucket Police nab armed robbery suspects

PAWTUCKET — Thanks to the diligent work of Pawtucket Police detectives, two suspects have been arrested who are accused of committing a string of frightening armed robberies and home invasions that have recently occurred in the city.
According to Pawtucket Police, over the past several weeks, detectives have been investigating a series of hold-ups involving a firearm being displayed that took place at local stores, gas stations and two residences. Information was developed from a tip that led detectives to two city men as suspects.

Pearson vows to focus on business climate

PROVIDENCE – Freshman Sen. Ryan Pearson, a Cumberland-Lincoln Democrat, described a series of visits he made to businesses and agencies last week as part of a campaign promise he made to focus on economic development and improving the state’s business climate.
He took tours of the Blackstone Valley Community Health Center (BVCHC), Twin River, the Quonset Development Corporation (QDC) and the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Manville Hill Road bridge to reopen next month

LINCOLN – Structural concerns over the Manville Hill Road Bridge have blocked off a major travel route between Lincoln and Cumberland — but hopefully not for long.
Bryan Lucier, a spokesman for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, said Thursday that plans are in the works to open the bridge as soon as next month, even if that is only a temporary solution to the bridge concerns.
“What we are doing is putting out an emergency contract to make repairs to the bridge,” Lucier said.

NORTON - Doris Nancy (Connors) Audette, 77, of South Worcester Street, Norton, died on December 30, 2012 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro following a brief illness. She was the beloved and cherished wife of Richard R. Audette to whom she was married on September 28, 1957.
Born at the family home in Cumberland, Rhode Island on April 3, 1935, she was a daughter of the late Daniel E. Connors, Sr. and Daisy (Harrison) Connors Bedard. Raised and educated in Pawtucket, Mrs. Audette resided in Attleboro before moving to Norton in 1969.

Born in South Attleboro he was the son of the late Julio and Mary (Purficacao) Costa. He resided in Cumberland over 50 years.
He was employed as a machinist by the former Standard Nut & Bolt Co., Cumberland for over 20 years until his retirement

PAWTUCKET - Nicolas El-Khaouli, 64, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 3, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Fatat (Selfany) El-Khaouli for forty-one years.
Born in Beirut, Lebanon, a son of the late Fouad and Mariam El-Khaouli, he came to the United States in 1993 and settled in Pawtucket. Nicolas was a member and Subdeacon at St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church, and was a member and Past Grand Master of the Rising Sun Lodge No. 30, East Providence.

PAWTUCKET - Lily (Harris) Watkinson, 93, went to her eternal home Thursday, January 3, 2013 at Linn Health Care Center, East Providence. She was the wife of the late Arthur Watkinson.
Born in England, a daughter of the late Ernest and Lily (Booth) Harris, she had lived in Pawtucket for the past 64 years. She was a graduate of Kinyon's Commercial School. Mrs. Watkinson was an office worker and in later years loved her work educating customers about fabrics in local stores before retiring.
