CUMBERLAND - Natividade Lopes, 100, of Broad St., passed away Wednesday in the Trinity Health & Rehabilitation Center, Woonsocket. She was the beloved wife of the late Joao Lopes.
Born in Insua, Portugal she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Maria deJesus (Vinagre) Rebelo. She came to this country at the age of 15 first living in Fall River then Central Falls and settling in Cumberland for the past 70 years.
Therese M. Landry
CUMBERLAND - Therese M. Landry, 91, died peacefully Thursday, January 17, 2013 at the Grandview Center, Cumberland. She was the beloved wife of the late Albert E. Landry for 59 years until his death in 2000.
PROVIDENCE â€“ When it comes to flying the friendly skies, Red Sox manager John Farrell has mapped out a travel schedule that will certainly make the time pass by a little quicker â€“ not mention rack up frequent flyer miles.
Following his appearance at Thursdayâ€™s Red Sox-themed â€śTown Hall Meetingâ€ť at La Salle Academy, Farrell will hop on a plane Friday morning and head to Dallas for some face-to-face time with pitcher John Lackey. Farrell then plans to shoot over to Fort Myers on Saturday to see pitchers Felix Doubront and Franklin Morales, both of who have already reported to JetBlue Park.
PAWTUCKET â€” Capt. Robert F. Thurber, Jr., a 25-year veteran of the Pawtucket Fire Department, has been named the city's fire marshal, announced Fire Chief William Sisson.
Thurber, who was formerly captain of Engine 2 at the downtown fire station, began his new position on Monday. He replaces the city's former fire marshal, Capt. Steven Parent, who recently retired.
Thurber is the Pawtucket Fire Department's training officer and has coordinated the last five fire schools for the department.
He is also an education instructor/coordinator for the Rhode Island Fire Academy.
PAWTUCKET â€” With a theme of economic optimism for the year ahead, The Pawtucket Foundation hosted over 100 business and elected leaders at its 12th Annual Meeting at the Blackstone Valley Visitor Center Tuesday evening.
Additionally, the Foundation announced that its new executive director would be Aaron M. Hertzberg, who has served in the position for the past three months in an interim capacity. Hired in 2008, Hertzberg previously worked as the organization's program director. He succeeds Thomas Mann, who resigned to take a new job opportunity.
CHICAGO --- Cumberland High cross country star Trevor Crawley added another accolade to his accomplishments on Thursday with his selection as the 2012-13 Gatorade Rhode Island Boysâ€™ Cross Country Runner of the Year.
The award not only recognizes outstanding athletic excellent, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the race course.
PAWTUCKET â€“ The Pawtucket Red Sox are pleased to report that their radio broadcaster Aaron Goldsmith has earned a job in the Major Leagues. The Seattle Mariners announced today that Goldsmith, the lead radio voice for the PawSox in 2012, has been hired to join their radio team for the 2013 season. Aaron will work with veteran Mariners voice Rick Rizzs to broadcast all Seattle games during the upcoming season.
COVENTRY â€” In East Providence Highâ€™s disappointing 50-47 loss to Rogers last Thursday, senior Mary Monagle proved to be one of the bright spots, knocking down six three-pointers to close with a season-high 20 points.
During another key Division II crossover battle against host Coventry on Wednesday night, head coach Mike Solitro drew upon that previous knowledge to help inspire his troops to a 45-38 triumph at the C. Arthur Flori Gymnasium.

Westerly High left no doubt who the better team was Tuesday at â€śThe Cage,â€ť the Bulldogs fashioning an impressive 80-61 triumph against Shea High. No matter what defensive alignment or lineup combination Shea head coach Matt Pita utilized in desperate hope of knocking Westerly off kilter, nothing seemed to work against a Bulldogsâ€™ outfit that owned both sides of the court.
PROVIDENCE â€“ Boasting a â€śBack to Basicsâ€ť budget that contains no increase in taxes â€“ and even a 2 percent reduction in the corporate tax rate over three years â€“ Gov. Lincoln Chafee submitted an $8.1 billion tax and spending plan for 2014 to the General Assembly on Wednesday.
Of the budget total, $3.4 billion will come from state taxes and other revenues, with the rest provided by the federal government.

PAWTUCKET- Juan J. Otero, 37, passed unexpectedly on January 13th.
Born in Puerto Rico, a son of the late Juan A. and Ramona (Lopez) Otero.
He had been employed as a bus driver by RIPTA for many years.
Robert E. Fontaine
ATTLEBORO- Robert E. Fontaine, 77 of South Attleboro, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 after a long battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by his loving family; a testament to the love he shared his entire life. He was the beloved husband of Lucille J. (Major) Fontaine for 55 years.
Born in Pawtucket, RI and a longtime resident of Seekonk, MA, he was a son of the late Leo and Ida (Dorais) Fontaine.
PAWTUCKET- Mary (Martin) Morra, of Spring Street, Pawtucket Passed away on January 13, 2013.
Mary was born in Pawtucket, the daughter of Florence J. (Jadach) Martin of Pawtucket and the late Horace F. Martin.
Besides her mother Mary is survived by her daughter Amanda Leigh Morra of Pawtucket, her brothers, Michael Martin, and Paul Martin of Pawtucket, Peter Martin of Framingham MA and John Martin of North Kingston. She also leave her sisters Kathleen Marsella of Lincoln and Susan Bourque of Plainville Ma. and 15 nieces and nephews.
PAWTUCKET â€“ The American Cancer Societyâ€™s Relay For Life of Pawtucket will hold its 10th anniversary kick-off rally at Plouffeâ€™s Cup & Saucer, 267 Main St., on Monday, Jan. 28 to launch their fundraising efforts for the year. The celebration begins at 6 p.m.; the public is invited.
John & Yvette Carozza
CENTRAL FALLS. Yvette Therese (LeBeau) Carozza entered into eternal life on Saturday January 12, 2013 after an illness. She was the devoted wife of John Richard Carozza, who passed into eternal life on Monday, January 14, 2013.
John and Yvette met in 1949 and were married in October of that year and were devoted to one another ever since. Yvette was a daughter of the late Leo and Antoinette (Pothier) LeBeau. And John was the son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Gosa) Carozza.
Francis L. Gemme
PAWTUCKET - Francis L. Gemme, 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 12, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Joyce L. (Raymond) Gemme for fifty-six years.
Born in Pawtucket, he was a son of the late Arthur J. and Imelda M. (Lefort) Gemme. Frank served in the Rhode Island National Guard Military Police for eight years. He was an engineering technician at Texas Instruments for forty-two years before retiring in 1991. Frank was a volunteer for the Darlington Plains Youth Association where he founded the Girls Basketball Program.
Maria Ilda Pacheco
CENTRAL FALLS - Maria Ilda Pacheco, 87, of Central Falls and formerly of Pawtucket, entered into eternal life on Monday after an illness. She was the wife of the late Edmundo Santos Pacheco.
She was born in Angola, Africa a daughter of the late Antonio Gomes Costa and Gracinda Lopes Costa. She came to the United States in 1977 and settled in Pawtucket.
She was a member of the Portuguese Continental Union. She had been employed as a packer at Inter-Pack, Pawtucket for 14 years.
GEORGETOWN, KY - Hargreaves (Hardy), Frances, 93, of Georgetown, KY, formally of Pawtucket, RI, passed away after a short illness on January 11, 2013. She was the wife of the late Clarence Hargreaves. Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late John G. and Alice (Lumb) Hardy.
Sebastiao A. Rocha
PAWTUCKET - Sebastiao A. Rocha, 78, entered into eternal rest on Thursday after an illness. He was the husband of the late Maria Filomena (Toste) Rocha.
He was born in Terceira Is. the Azores, a son of the late Sebastiao and Ilda de Amparo Rocha. He had lived in Pawtucket for the last 38 years. Mr. Rocha had been a machine operator at American Insulated Wire Co for several years. He was a member of the Amigos de Terceira, and a communicant of St. Anthony's Church in Pawtucket.
WOONSOCKET - Florence (Husson) David, 84 of Star Avenue, passed away Friday in the Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Edward J. David.
Born in Aita-El-Foukhar, Lebanon, she was the daughter of the late Metri and Nayfe (Skaff) Husson. She moved to this country in 1948, settling in Woonsocket.
Mrs. David was a homemaker devoting her life to her family and friends. Her unconditional love, friendship and kindness will be truly missed by all.
