Allen Webster: From Dodger Blue to Red Sox Nation

PAWTUCKET -- Allen Webster remembers the first time he heard his name come up in last August’s blockbuster trade between the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers that sent him to New England.
“I was in the clubhouse,” said Webster, who at the time, was playing for the Dodgers’ Double-A team in Chattanooga, Tenn. “I saw my name go across the bottom of the screen on ESPN. (The trade) wasn’t 100 percent, but that’s when I kind of knew.”

PAWTUCKET — Jackie Bradley Jr. is a 22-year-old center fielder so polished and poised that your first inclination is to check his driver’s license just to verify his age.
Currently touted as one of the top prospects in the Red Sox farm system, he said playing under the spotlight of the College World Series helped him prepare for the attention he’ll soon be receiving as a professional.

Arciliares found guilty in 2010 shooting death of Barros

PROVIDENCE — Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin Friday announced that convicted murderer Victor Arciliares, 24, was found guilty by a Providence County Superior Court jury of one count of first degree murder, discharging a firearm while committing a crime of violence, discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle, assault with intent to commit murder and using a firearm while committing a crime of violence.
The jury delivered the guilty verdict after deliberating two-and-one-half days following a five-day trial presided over by Superior Court Justice Robert D. Krause.

Bill restricts receivers, other overseers to fiscal matters

PROVIDENCE – Central Falls Rep. Gus Silva has once again introduced legislation that would restrict the authority of receivers, budget commissions and overseers appointed to cities and towns by the state to fiscal matters only and not to any other aspect of municipal government.
Under the legislation, receivers or other state interveners would not be allowed to relegate any elected body to an advisory capacity, as the receiver did to the City Council in Central Falls, or to abolish any board or commission of a city or town.

Locals polled on plans for river corridor development

PAWTUCKET — On the surface, a city with a vibrant river running through it should be able to boast about “location, location, location.” Yet, because the Blackstone River was long used and abused for the purpose of industry, the riverfront property in Pawtucket and neighboring Central Falls is far from anyone's idea of “high-end” real estate.

PAWTUCKET- Mabel (Davis) Powers, 86, passed away Friday, January 25, 2013. She was the beloved wife of the late Ambrose W. Powers.
Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Louis A. and Mary E. (Barsey) Davis, she resided in Pawtucket most of her life.
Mabel was employed by the former Home Laundry and the former Kings Laundry, Pawtucket for many years until retiring. She enjoyed playing High-Low-Jack on Tuesdays with her friends.

PAWTUCKET- Adrienne F. (Genereux) McNaughton, 77, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 24, 2013. She was the beloved wife of Donald David McNaughton, the couple would have celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary in April.
A lifelong resident of Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Mary A. (McCarthy) Genereux.

LINCOLN- Constance A. (Mathieu) Mocogni, 70, of Lake Wales, FL and formerly of Lincoln, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2013 in Lake Wales, FL. She was the wife of the late Brian Mocogni for over 40 years and the wife of the late Thomas Colbert.
Born in Pawtucket, a daughter of the late Alphonse and Loretta (Chaput) Mathieu, she had lived in Lincoln for many years before moving to Florida.
Connie worked in the Lincoln Town Hall for over 30 years retiring in 2010.

House OKs gay marriage

PROVIDENCE — A bill to legitimize same sex marriage, which both its sponsor and its most vehement opponent agreed was, “The most important piece of legislation (the House) will ever consider” passed the House of Representative on a 51-19 vote Thursday.
When Rep. Gordon Fox, the first openly gay man to be elected Speaker of the House, banged his gavel after the vote and declared “the act prevails,” there were loud cheers, a standing ovation in the spectator galleries and sustained whooping and clapping that lasted for several minutes before Fox banged his gavel again to adjourn the session.

CENTRAL FALLS- Berard, Maurice, 81, died Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at home.
A lifelong resident of Central Falls, he was the beloved husband of the late Germaine (Richard) Berard for 51 years.
He graduated from Rhode Island College of Pharmacy and served in the US Army, stationed in Germany. He was the owner of Duchesneau's Pharmacy for many years and also worked at DePasquale's Pharmacy until his retirement in 2005.

LINCOLN- Marion E. (Provost) English, 90, of 10 Franklin Street died Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at Miriam Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of the late Everett F. English.
Born in Cumberland, a daughter of the late Oliver J. and Elizabeth (Hunter) Provost, she had lived in Cumberland for 75 years before moving to Lincoln in 1997.
Mrs. English was a 1940 graduate of Cumberland High School.

East Providence nets 74-64 win over Central

EAST PROVIDENCE – After a game of twists and turns galore, head coach Alex Butler wouldn't say he was thrilled after his East Providence High squad had registered a 74-64 Division I-Central victory over gamey Central High on Wednesday night.
He also didn't downplay it.
“The key thing for us is we've been working so hard on our zone defense in practice, we wanted to see it work,” he noted as the triumph pushed the Townies back to .500 overall (7-7), and left them at 5-6 in league play. “We wanted to be in attack mode from the wing to the baseline to the block, and we did that well here.

Take precautions against the cold

State and local officials urged residents to take precautions as dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills were forecast for the region through the weekend.
They also advised those at risk of exposure to take shelter at warming centers, including Mathieu Senior Center; 420 Main St., Pawtucket. The site is open from 8:30-4 p.m. daily through Friday.
“Dress warmly, in layers, even if you are making a short trip to the mailbox,” advised Woonsocket Emergency Management Director Gary Lataille.

LINCOLN- George Gannites, 84, formerly of Lincoln, died January 1, 2013. He was the husband of the late Ruth ((Noelte) Gannites.
Born in Newark, NJ, he was a son of the late Nicholas and Athena (Evdu) Gannites.
Mr. Gannites was employed with the Limerock Fired Dept. for many years. He retired as the Chief in 1986. He also served with the Lincoln Police in its special police program. He was also a member of the FOPA.
