Tolman baseball team to play Newtown High at McCoy Stadium

PAWTUCKET — The heartfelt initiative of Tolman High baseball coach Theo Murray coupled with the open-arms approach of PawSox president Mike Tamburro has helped lay the groundwork for a special event scheduled for Saturday, April 20 at McCoy Stadium.
A high school baseball game will take place that day with first pitch set for 11:30 a.m. This non-league, seven-inning affair will produce a winner and a defeated party, but the outcome will be a footnote in a symphony composed in fellowship, compassion and healing.

SRA's basketball playoff fate hanging by a thread after loss to Hendricken at the buzzer

PAWTUCKET – St. Raphael was confronted with a harsh reality following Saturday’s 55-52 buzzer-beating loss to Bishop Hendricken.
Not only do the Saints have to win out, but they also find themselves in the uncomfortable position of having to rely on other teams in hopes of cracking the Division I tournament. Bids are extended to the top 10 finishers. At the moment, SRA’s 5-10 mark is good for 11th best, meaning hope was not completely lost when Hendricken’s Kazre Cummings came down and nailed a 3-pointer on the left wing as time expired.

Ackerman irked over bridge closure

CUMBERLAND — State Rep. Mia A. Ackerman (D-Dist. 45 Cumberland, Lincoln) is in talks with officials from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) after learning that the Manville Hill Road Bridge on the Cumberland-Lincoln line will have to remain closed until the end of April.

DLT helping residents with unemployment claims

Development Corp. loan program helping businesses for 20 years

PAWTUCKET — For the past 20 years, small- or medium-sized business owners, either in Pawtucket or looking to relocate here, have had a helping hand to turn to for some of their financing needs. It has come by way of a non-profit, quasi-city entity called the Pawtucket Business Development Corporation, and it's still very much a viable resource for providing low-interest lending even in this current difficult economy.

CUMBERLAND - Gertrude R. Ritchotte, 78, of Chimney Hill Apartments, passed away Tuesday in the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence. She was the wife of Henry "Hank" L. Ritchotte and they had been married for 57 years.
Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late Leonel Tanguay and Graziella Chagnon. She resided in Cumberland for the past 8 years, previously residing on Aiken Street, Pawtucket for over 40 years.

WOONSOCKET - Leona Thibault, 94, of Woonsocket, formerly of Lewiston, Maine died Thursday morning at Trinity Health & Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late Laurier Thibault.
Born and raised in Central Falls, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Evelyn (Boulanger) Patenaude. Following her marriage she resided in Lewiston, ME for over 60 years prior to relocating to the Woonsocket area several years ago.
Mrs. Thibault was employed at Hillcrest Poultry Company and Raytheon Corporation prior to her retirement.

CENTRAL FALLS - Bonnie L. (McCartin) Aldana, 49, of Hedly Avenue died Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at home surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Providence, a daughter of James E. McCartin of Pawtucket and the late Marilyn (Truesdale) McCartin, she had lived in Central Falls for the past 14 years.
Bonnie was a certified nurse's assistant at the Mansion Nursing Home, Central Falls for 12 years and had also worked at Fuller Packaging Company.

PAWTUCKET: Oceano "Dumar" M. DaLomba, 83, passed at home on January 30, 2013. He was the husband of the late Maria (Fidalga) DaLomba.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, a son of the late Joao and Emilia (Moniz) DaLomba.
He had been employed by the former Carol Cable of Pawtucket for over 20 years.

Poll: Chafee’s prospects for second term looking dim

PROVIDENCE – Whether he runs as an Independent or a Democrat, and no matter which opponents he runs against, it looks like Gov. Lincoln Chafee is going to have a hard time keeping his job after the 2014 election.
Public Policy Polling (PPP), a Democratic-leaning national polling organization that surveyed Rhode Islanders last week, stated it starkly when they released their polling results Thursday: “Lincoln Chafee's prospects for a second term as governor of Rhode Island are looking pretty dim.”

Burst pipe closes EP High

EAST PROVIDENCE — Pending the results of air quality tests scheduled to be taken Saturday in the wake of a water pipe break early Thursday morning at East Providence High School, interim School Superintendent John DeGoes said he anticipates the school will reopen on Monday as scheduled.
A water pipe in the new wing of the high school burst at around 8 a.m. Thursday, spewing enough water to flood 20 classrooms on two floors of the wing.

CUMBERLAND — It certainly looked as if improved Tolman High, which rolled into Cumberland’s Wellness Center late Wednesday afternoon with five victories in its previous seven tilts, would make it six-of-eight.
The Tigers also seemed destined to eke out a two- or three-point triumph over the Clippers, but head coach Gary Reedy’s crew had other plans.

PAWTUCKET — For a ballclub hoping to be one of the deserving 16 teams in the state’s Open Tournament at the end of February, Shea’s been doing its part these days by turning in some excellent basketball.
On Tuesday night, the Raiders put together another splendid outing to sew up their fourth straight victory, this one coming at “The Cage” against neighboring Division II crossover foe Lincoln.
Junior guard Chris Mainville’s contest-high 21 points and nine assists and senior forward Alvin Semedo’s double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds led the way for the Raiders in their 63-48 triumph.

Kahila Leigh is interested in the challenges of psychiatric nursing while Ayowole Tom-Jones desires to work in pediatrics. All of these young people with “healing hands” attend the Rhode Island Nurses Institute Middle College Charter School, a new high school located in downtown Providence.

They had been married for 66 years. Mr. Lourenco was born in Cumberland, the son of the late Fernando Lourenco and Maria deCarvalho Albuquerque. He was a United States Army Air Corp Veteran in WWII.
