Pawtucket lawmaker authors legislation to shake up Parole Board

PROVIDENCE – The recent parole granted to convicted “thrill killer” Alfred Brissette Jr. of Woonsocket – which shocked the populace and angered law enforcement and correctional officers — is generating proposed legislation to shake up the membership of the state Parole Board and to prevent such early releases in the future.

Man gets 10 years for machine gun possession

PAWTUCKET – A local man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges of being in possession of an unregistered machine gun and ammunition, federal prosecutors said.
Isaiah Gasperini, 30, was also ordered to serve an additional year and a day for violating the terms of his release following a lengthy prison sentence on a previous firearms conviction.
Gasperini was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Mary M. Lisi in Providence, U.S. Attorney Peter F. Neronha and Providence Police Chief Col. Hugh T. Clements Jr. announced in a joint statement.

Class sizes remain same -- student/teacher ratio at manageable level

PAWTUCKET — With all of the emphasis in recent years on standardized test scores and college readiness, the topic of class sizes and the student-to-teacher ratio is one factor to consider. Private schools and charter schools, in particular, tout smaller class sizes as a key factor behind their student bodies' typically higher showings on tests such as the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP).

SWANSEA, MA - Gilbert E. Arundale, 90, passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2013 at his home in Swansea, Massachusetts surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Robertine (Gauthier) Arundale.
Mr. Arundale was born in Central Falls, the son of the late Edwin Arundale and Mary E. (Mills) Arundale. He was employed at Collyer Wire for many years where he was a wire insulator.
He was a United States Army Veteran serving in WWII.

COVENTRY - Albert A. Casavant, 63, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 26, 2013. He was the husband of Patricia (Morin) Casavant. Born in Pawtucket, he was a son of the late Edgar E. and Theresa M. (Sorel) Casavant. Albert retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service and served during the Vietnam War era. He then worked as a mail handler for the U.S. Postal Service for 18 years until retiring. Al was an avid gun collector and was a member of the Wincheck Gun Club, Coventry and the NRA.

PAWTUCKET - Lena A. Boulanger, 83, of Pawtucket, passed away Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the Miriam Hospital, surrounded by her family. Born in Attleboro, MA, she was the daughter of the late Anthonio and Leanora (Quaglia) Sylvester. Lena was an LPN for 44 years, working at Cape Cod Hospital, and Sturdy Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Pawtucket Democratic Committee, and various senior citizens groups in the Pawtucket area.

EAST FALMOUTH, Ma - Daniel C. Freitas, 80 of Regis Road, passed away Monday in Kindred Hospital, Stoughton, MA. He was the husband of the late Jacqueline (Desjardins) Freitas.
Born in Cumberland, RI, he was the son of the late Lucas and Virginia Freitas. He resided in East Falmouth for the past 30 years, previously residing in Plainville.
Mr. Freitas was employed for more than 30 years at General Motors, Framingham.
He was a former Merchant Marine.
He was also a ballroom dancer at the Roseland Ballroom and also a former member of the Elks Lodge, Falmouth.

GREENVILLE - William H. Carnahan, 87 of Greenville died February 22, 2013 at Cortland Place. He was the husband of Gwendolyn E. (Fitzpatrick) Carnahan.
Mr. Carnahan was born in Indiana, Pennsylvania. Son of the late William Carnahan Sr. and Virginia (Telford) Carnahan. He was employed by DeBlois Oil as an oil driver for fifteen years. He was a Buck Sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a member of the American Legion and loved traveling.

Garcia sentenced to life plus 30 years for 2010 murder

PROVIDENCE — Armando Garcia, 33, with a last known address of 486 Mineral Spring Ave. in Pawtucket was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday for the 2010 murder of Brooke Lee Verdoia, according to Attorney General Peter Kilmartin’s Office. In addition, Superior Court Justice Susan E. McGuirl sentenced Garcia to five years to run consecutive for the charges of failure to report a death and driving a motor vehicle without consent.

Man charged with child molestation

PAWTUCKET — A 23-year-old city man is accused of raping a 13-year-old girl at his apartment on multiple occasions, Pawtucket Police said.
The suspect, Sergio C. Fernandes, of Vale Street, was arrested on Monday afternoon after a family member went to police about the matter. Major Arthur Martins said the incidents involving the girl, who is unrelated to the suspect and lives elsewhere in the city, are alleged to have been taking place since December.

She had been employed by Crystal Thermo Plastics, Magco Plastics and JP Coats.
She was a member of the former Ashton Homemakers.

PAWTUCKET - Marie F. (Gavin) Bouchard, 86, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 21, 2013. She was beloved wife of the late Francis E. Mayers and Gerard Bouchard.
Born in Cambridge, MA, she was a daughter of the late George E. and Hazel T. (Burnham) Gavin. Marie resided in Connecticut where she worked as a nurses aide before moving to Pawtucket in 1996, and then worked as an assistant at Rose's Daycare for 17 years. She was an active member of the Senior's Club at St. Teresa Parish, Pawtucket.

PAWTUCKET - Richard "Dick" T. Tomasso, 68, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Monday, February 25, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Shirley L. (Webster) Tomasso for 47 years.
Born in Providence, a son of Mary (Salzillo) Tomasso of Providence and the late John Tomasso, he resided in Pawtucket since 1992. Dick was a diamond tool maker for J & M Diamond Tool Co., Inc., East Providence for over 40 years. He enjoyed the ocean, especially sitting on the rocks at Galilee and watching the boats. Most of all he loved his family.

PAWTUCKET - Worthington "Sparky" Leonard, 92, passed away Monday, February 25, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Gloria C. (Lefebvre) Leonard for 66 years.
Born in Fairfax, Vermont, a son of the late Wesley J. and Jennie (Ward) Leonard, he resided in Pawtucket the past 67 years. A World War II U.S. Army veteran, he served in the Infantry 85th Division in Italy and France. Sparky was employed by Brown & Sharpe, Providence for 40 years before retiring in 1981, and was a member of the International Machine Association.
