Local clinic tied to meningitis outbreak

LINCOLN – A local pain management clinic has received a federal court subpoena for records tied to a national outbreak of fungal meningitis resulting from tainted pharmaceuticals last year.
Ocean State Pain Management of Blackstone Valley Place is one of 76 clinics around the country that federal health officials say dispensed contaminated drugs from New England Compounding Pharmacy in Framingham.

PAWTUCKET - John F. Andrade, 95, of West Lawn Avenue, Pawtucket died on Monday, June 24, 2013. He was the husband of Gloria (Pita) Andrade. They were married 65 years.
Mr. Andrade was born in Pawtucket, the son of the late Mariano and Mary (Mederois) Andrade. He was a machine operator at American Insulated Wire for many years.
Besides his wife Gloria, Mr. Andrade is survived by his son Michael Andrade of Pawtucket. He was the father of the late John Joseph Andrade.

C.F. chemical fire draws dozens of responders

CENTRAL FALLS — Brutally hot outside temperatures and a fire and chemical spill inside a paint factory combined to cause a hazardous and uncomfortable scene for dozens of area firefighters on Monday.
Firefighters responded to the five-alarm blaze at around 11:30 a.m. at General Polymer Inc., an industrial paints and coatings company located at 59 Foundry St. The company occupies a three-story, 75,000-square foot brick mill building located in a densely populated neighborhood off Broad Street.

PAWTUCKET - Virginia D. Thomas, 67, of Pawtucket passed away peacefully Monday at Miriam Hospital with her loved ones by her side. She was the wife of Frank Thomas Jr. Born in Pawtucket she was the daughter of Doris (Masse) Paquin of Pawtucket and the late Henry L. Paquin.
Mrs. Thomas was employed as a registered nurse at Grandview Nursing Center until her retirement. She was a graduate of Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.

EAST PROVIDENCE - Helen M. Bozek, 76, of Riverside passed away Saturday June 22, 2013 at her residence. She was the beloved wife of John M. Bozek. They were married for 50 years May 25, 2013.
Born in Pawtucket she was a daughter of Elsie (Stankevich) Fober of Pawtucket and the late Frank Fober Sr. She lived in Riverside for the past 3 years and was formerly of Pawtucket.
Before she retired Helen was employed as a Bookkeeper for her familys business, Michaels Meats of Cumberland and the former Michaels Boulevard Meats of Pawtucket.

LINCOLN - John A. Mercer, 90, of Lincoln and formerly of Pawtucket passed away on June 24, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Catherine E. (Smith) Mercer. Mr. Mercer was born in Pawtucket, the son of Ernest and Margaretta (Reilly) Mercer.
Mr. Mercer served his country in the US Army during World War II being deployed to the European Theatre. He retired from the Providence Journal Company after 40 years of service and was also a member of the Pawtucket Personnel Board from more than 30 years.

CUMBERLAND - Alice Santos, 96, formerly of Cumberland, passed away Monday at The Highlander, Fall River. She was the wife of the late Constantino "Slugger" Santos, former Deputy Chief of the Cumberland Police Department.
Born in Fall River, MA, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Rosa (Travers) Estrella.
Mrs. Santos was employed as a factory worker for the Attleboro Dye Company for many years until her retirement.
She was a communicant of the St. Patrick Church, Cumberland. She was a charter member of the Cumberland-Lincoln Community Chorus.

PAWTUCKET - Lenora C. Costantino, 95, formerly of Pawtucket died on Saturday, June 22, 2013 surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of Italo "Adrian" Costantino. They had been married 69 years.
Mrs. Costantino was born in Pawtucket the daughter of the late Carmine Costantino and Angelina (Roberta) Constantino.
She was a seamstress at Standard Romper and then worked at the Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island in Pawtucket.

CUMBERLAND - Geraldine S. (Taylor) Buss, 70, of Old Whipple Street, passed away Sunday at home. She was the beloved wife of Paul J. Buss.
Born in Central Falls, she was the daughter of the late Thomas R. and Ursula Taylor. She was a life-long resident of Cumberland.
During her early years, Geraldine was employed by the Pawtucket Credit Rating Bureau, and the Central Falls Public Assistance Office.

She was the daughter of the late Charles and Maria (DaLuz) Viveiros.
She had dedicated her life to her family.
She is survived by, three sons, Dennis Murphy, William Pizzo and John Pizzo, two daughters, Theresa Anderson and Melissa Brayall of Lincoln, a step son, Joseph Pizzo, 12 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

And leading off for the Ocean State Waves of the New England Collegiate Baseball League stood Pawtucket’s Nick Sebastian.
Before Sebastian strolled to the plate with his Waves losing 3-2 to the Laconia Muskrats, he had spent a lengthy time on his baseball journey outside of his hometown until the Waves brought him back to Rhode Island.

PAWTUCKET -- On a late March day in Fort Myers, Fla., Xander Bogaerts could have accepted what the lineup card stipulated and left it at that.

The Red Sox prospect and now the newest member of the PawSox, however, was comfortable enough in his own skin to approach the powers-that-be and show his eagerness and enthusiasm for the game he is paid to play.

According to one staff member, the sequence helped cast the player in a whole new light.
