Lincoln Little Leaguers awaits state tournament, contests Cranston Western in Saturday's opener

LINCOLN — On Tuesday afternoon, Lincoln All-Stars’ manager Matt Netto still didn’t know which opponent his team would face in the opening round of the upcoming state Little League Major Division (11-12) Tournament.
Because Cranston Western upset winners’ bracket titleist Johnston, 11-6, Monday night, those two District I representatives faced off in a winner-take-all championship game on Wednesday night at Cranston Western’s home site.

City Parks & Rec. raises funds to rebuild structure lost to fire

PAWTUCKET— It's not quite the same as an old-fashioned “barn raising,” but close. Thanks to an outpouring of business and community support, plans are moving ahead for replacing a burnt out summer camp storage facility at Slater Park with something bigger and better.
An early morning fire on Dec. 30, 2012 destroyed the storage facility and all of its contents, along with an administrative and counselor training office. Among the items lost were arts and crafts supplies, games, and sporting goods used for the city's annual summer camp program.

CUMBERLAND - Andrew "Matt" M. Mikula, 88, of Maybury Street, passed away Wednesday at the Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket. He was the husband of the late Leona (Nawrocki) Mikula.
Born in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Maciej and Maryann(Cyran) Mikula. He was a life-long resident of Cumberland.
He was a United States Navy, World War II Veteran serving during the invasions at Saipan, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.

CUMBERLAND — When the Cumberland Major Division All-Stars arrive at the Bart Giamatti Complex in Bristol, Conn. sometime later this morning, they’re going to have the perfect guide to direct them around the facilities in Jocelyn Bodington.
That’s because the 12-year-old standout is the only member of last season’s ballclub – coaches included – that participated in the Eastern Regionals and was two victories away from capturing the regional championship and earning its way into the Little League World Series.

'Cake Boss' hands out 10,000 free cakes

With a single serving size weighing in at a hefty 330 calories, there’s a good chance some of the thousands of Rhode Islanders who stopped by Kennedy Plaza Wednesday to receive a complimentary cake from Cake Boss Buddy Valastro will be feeling some remorse today and working a little extra to burn off the calories.
Or if you’re Dennis Hoag of Central Falls you’re planning to have a slice for breakfast and maybe another for lunch.
“Not bad,” Hoag says as he licked a dab of frosting from his finger under a shade tree in nearby Burnside Park.

She was the beloved wife of the late Armand Alcide Breault for 51 years until his death in 1998. She was born in Pawtucket, the daughter of the late Napolean and Delina (Lamontagne) Grenier and lived in the Pawtucket Blackstone Valley area her entire life.

KEEP YOUR COOL: National Grid monitoring power usage during heat wave

Cranking up the air conditioner is one way to stay cool during an oppressive heat wave, but with electricity usage forecast to reach near record-breaking levels this week, National Grid is asking consumers to voluntarily conserve electricity to help keep supply and demand in balance during the hot spell.
“There’s always a concern when we have prolonged hot weather, but rarely do we see five to six days of this kind of oppressive heat and humidity,” said National Grid Spokesman David D. Graves.

She was born in Providence, daughter of the late Harry and Annie (Farnworth) Haworth. She was employed by A & J Jewelry of Providence for thirty years until her retirement. She served many years at St. Luke's Episcopal Church as parish administrator. She was an active member of Episcopal Church Women.

Born in Attleboro on October 14, 1982, he was the son of George J. Sr. and Catherine (McClellan) Landry. George was educated in Attleboro schools and was a graduate of Attleboro High School. He was currently working as a receiver at Trader Joe's warehouse in Middleboro. George was a devoted father who enjoyed spending time with his son and family.

CUMBERLAND - Arnold "Ronnie" K. Conover, 68, of Pawtucket, formerly of Cumberland, passed away Monday at Home and Hospice Care of RI, Providence.
Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Irene (Sousa) Conover. He resided in Pawtucket for over 40 years, previously residing in Cumberland.
Mr. Conover was a Seaman for the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era.
He was a retired teamster of Local 251.

He was the loving husband of Denise (Fitzpatrick) Beck. He was also the husband of the late Loretta (Poirier) Beck.
Mr. Beck was born in Norton, Massachusetts, the son of the late George and Beatrice (Thibeaux) Beck.
Mr. Beck was a truck driver for many years and proudly served in the United States Army for his country.

LINCOLN – Most skippers would agree: You take 'em how you can get 'em.

Upper Deck Post 86-14 took advantage of seven walks, a hit batsmen and three errors – all in a nine-run fifth frame – to register a stunning, come-from-behind 11-6 marathon victory over Navigant Post 85 at Chet Nichols Memorial Field on Monday night.

With the triumph, Upper Deck – which mustered only three hits in the contest – remained in first place in R.I. American Legion League-North Division action at 13-3 (18-5 overall), while co-manager Jim Gauthier's club fell to 12-5 in league play.

“Jim bristles when he hears that,” jokes Lynn. Although the two veteran bakers are quick to point out that they didn't want to be “just a bakery” either, and having coffee and morning newspapers available to accompany their baked goods helps bring customers in and keeps them coming back.

PAWTUCKET - Audette, Kenneth G. "Kenny", 58 passed away Saturday at Oakhill Nursing and Rehabilitation in Pawtucket. He was the beloved son of the late George J. and June (Voyer) Audette.
Kenneth was a very special person whose wonderful personality and winning smile brought out the best in everyone he met. He enjoyed going camping with his mother and father in their motor home, visiting construction sites with his dad and listening to country music. He was a loyal fan of the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox.

Mr. Moretti was born in Pawtucket, the son of the late Eugene and Mary (Nicoletti) Moretti.
He was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War.
After the war, Mr. Moretti worked at the Fram Corporation for many years.
He is survived by his loving cousins, Alice Marques, Patricia DiLucido, Susan Magill and Mary Lou Altman.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Moretti on Wednesday, July 17th at 10:00 am in St. Teresa's Church, 358 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket.

PAWTUCKET - Katherine E. McCaughey, 66, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 8, 2013. She was the beloved daughter of the late Hugh J. and Ella M. (Turner) McCaughey.
Katherine was a Class of 1975 graduate of Roger Williams University and worked in retail as a buyer, at Ann & Hope, Cumberland for 31 years and for the TJX, Corporation for 10 years.
Katherine leaves many cousins and dear friends.

Lincoln nets trip to state tourney with 13-2 win over CALL

LINCOLN -- Southpaw Kyle Marrapese hurled four-plus innings of superb relief and teammate Dominic Cunha went 2-for-2 with a double, walk, three RBI and two runs scored on Sunday night.
With that and more, the Lincoln All-Stars snatched an easier-than-expected 13-2 victory over Cumberland National in the R.I. Little League District IV Tournament’s title tilt at Randy Hien Field late Sunday night.
In the process, Lincoln inked its return to the state tourney, and will begin play on Saturday at Cranston Western’s home.
