Joseph S. Beck

CUMBERLAND - Joseph S. Beck of Cumberland died on July 21, 2013.
Mr. Beck was born in Pawtucket, the son of the late Maxwell A. Beck and Elizabeth (Sullivan) Beck. He was also the brother of the late Mary E. Beck. Mr. Beck was a United States Army Veteran of WWII.
Mr. Beck was a teacher and counselor at Cumberland High School for many years.

Wrong-way driver was wanted man

LINCOLN – The wrong-way driver who caused a crash in which he and two passengers in another car perished on Route 146 Sunday was the target of an active arrest warrant for failure to answer charges of driving without a license, court records say.

A District Court judge had issued the bench warrant for Aldo M. Almanzar, 39, when he failed to appear for arraignment on North Smithfield police charges of driving without a license on Feb. 26.

WARWICK – Upper Deck Post 86/14 skipper Steve Reynolds Sr. admitted before his squad's final regular-season tilt against Senerchia Post 74 early Monday night that he'd be a bit shorthanded, as four or five of his players were home nursing minor injuries.
“It's a long season, and those things are going to happen,” he stated. “We're OK.”
The club was much better than that after recent Cumberland High grad and southpaw Dylan Boisclair scattered five hits and three walks while mowing down a half-dozen Senerchia batters in a satisfying 3-1 victory at Hendricken High's Ray Pepin Field.

CUMBERLAND - Joaquim H. Sousa, 87, a longtime former Cumberland resident, passed away Friday at the Eastgate Nursing Center, East Providence. He was the beloved husband of the late Luciana (Lemos) Sousa. "Grandpa" loved and was devoted
to his family, especially enjoying his years in retirement spending time with his grandchildren and great grandson.

PAWTUCKET - Lillian D. Boyer, 69, of Columbine Avenue, passed away July 11 at the Memorial Hospital.
Born in Central Falls, she was the daughter of the late Simoel Boyer and Therese (Foisy) Boyer. She resided in Cumberland for most of her life.
She was employed in the Print Shop for the former Brooks Drug Pharmacy.
She was a communicant of St. Aidan Church. Lillian loved to go camping with family, and was an avid bowler.

WOONSOCKET - Elizabeth Clarke Howes, 66, of Dana Street, passed away Monday at the Trinity Health Care Center, Woonsocket.
Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late James Sturgis Howes and Ellen (Clarke) Howes. She resided Woonsocket for the last few years, previously residing in Cumberland.
She was a 1965 graduate of Cumberland High School. She was also a 1969 graduate of Stonehill College.
Miss Howes was employed as teacher for the Pawtucket School Department for over 30 years.

PAWTUCKET - Fernande A. Baris, 90, a resident of The St. Jeanne Jugan Residence passed away Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Rhode Island Hospital. Born in Central Falls, she was a daughter of the late Ferdinand G. and Eva C. (Bedard) Baris.
Miss Baris was a Clerk, Stenographer and Secretary for The United States Government and The State of Rhode Island, retiring in 1988 after 22 years of service.

PAWTUCKET - Beverly A. (Carvalho) Sheehan, 73, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 22, 2013. She was the beloved wife of the late Frederic W. Sheehan. Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Louis and Mary (Martins) Carvalho. Beverly worked at Texas Instruments, Attleboro for many years until her retirement.
She leaves two children, Shawn C. Sheehan and Shelly L. Carvalho both Pawtucket; two grandsons, Trevor Willis and Justin Carvalho and a sister, Hilda Alexander of Boynton Beach, FL. She was the sister of the late Dolores 'Del' LaFountaine.

ATTLEBORO/TAUNTON - Phyllis A (McCormick) Shaw, 74 years old, died July 18, 2013, in Life Care Center of Attleboro. She was born in Pawtucket, RI., daughter of the late William and Agnes (O'Brien) McCormick. She was a graduate of Tolman High School in Pawtucket. For many years she was employed by Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket as a Family Care Worker.
Phyllis and her late husband, Arthur E. Shaw wintered in Florida. She formerly lived on Washington Street, in Taunton and on Weldon St in Pawtucket. Phyllis enjoyed bowling and golfing.

CUMBERLAND - Edward J. Gorman, 77, passed on July 19th, he was the longtime companion of Danny Savard.
Born in Maine, he was the son of the late Patrick O. Gorman and Jane (Blouin) McClaine.
He had been employed in the jewelry industry for many years.
Besides his companion he is survived by his beloved dog "Mollie", his aunts, Ester Morgan of Augusta, Maine, and Emma Watts of Alabama and many cousins.

Three die in wrong-way crash

LINCOLN — Rhode Island State Police confirmed on Sunday that three people were killed after a head-on crash on Route 146 at 3:07 a.m.
State police said the crash was caused by Aldo Almanzar, 29 of North Smithfield who was driving a Toyota and traveling in the wrong direction on Route 146 near Route 99. Almanzar’s car hit a Hondo Accord, head-on according to state police. There were three people in the Honda.
State police said Almanzar, who was killed, did not have a driver's license and was not wearing a seat belt.

CRANSTON — If the Lincoln All-Stars had any concerns during their R.I. Little League Major Division (11-12) Tournament opener on Saturday afternoon, they didn't relate to their collective performance but the weather conditions, which slowly deteriorated.
As the skies overhead grew dark and thunder resounding in the background, righty reliever Dave Bordieri put the finishing touches on Cranston Western, the crushed victim of relentless Lincoln's 13-0 “mercy rule” triumph at Michael P. Varrato Field.

Fire doused in Central Falls

CENTRAL FALLS—A three-story building at 52 Watson St. was damaged by fire at about noon Saturday after a Dumpster next to the building caught fire. Flames extended to the outside of the building. The fire quickly went to two alarms due to the intense heat. Mutual aid was called to the scene to assist.

CENTRAL FALLS – Police are asking for the public’s help after a woman was shot at 108 Cross St. at 4:45 Saturday morning. Police said a 28-year-old unidentified woman was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. Police are investigating a "commonality" between Saturday's shooting and a shooting last month at Hadwin and Tremont streets, a police press release stated. Police would not release any other details as the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Police Department’s tip line at 727-7420.

Bodington, Cumberland bring heat in 11-1 victory over Charlton, Mass. in Eastern Regionals opener

BRISTOL, Conn. — Jocelyn Bodington delivered one of the finest outings of her young softball career, Alex Pina knocked in five runs to lead a potent attack at the plate, and the Cumberland All-Stars made their presence felt in a very big way on Friday afternoon in the Eastern Regional tournament.
The three-time Major Division state champions kicked off their New England pool play by parlaying Bodington’s dominant pitching and an 11-hit assault into an 11-1 win over Charlton, Mass. that went all six innings at Breen Field on the Bart Giamatti Complex.

PAWTUCKET - Spink, Pauline L. (Jacques), 72, of Steadman Ave, passed away peacefully in the caring hands of the staff at Hospice Care in Providence RI on Monday July 15, 2013.
Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late Domenic Jacques & Gilberte Jacques.
Pauline grew up in Pawtucket. At the age of 17 she went to Quebec, Canada, to the convent and served as a nun in several orders. After 3 years she returned home and later met and married George Gaumond. She dedicated her life to raising her two children, and later 4 grandchildren.

PAWTUCKET - Susan T. Nolette, 58, passed away Thursday, July 18, 2013. Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Roland J. "Ziggy" and Irene M. (Beauchemin) Nolette. Sue was a graduate of the former St. Jean-Baptiste High School, Pawtucket and a graduate of Rhode Island College where she received her Master's Degree in Education. She was an educator at the Providence Center and most recently in Fort Pierce, Florida until retiring.

LINCOLN - Cheryl A. Rowe 66, of Smithfield Avenue passed away Tuesday July 16, 2013 at Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island. She was the beloved wife of Roger H. Durand.
Born in Pawtucket she was a daughter of the late Charles P. and Lucy (Oleska) Kwolek. She was a life long resident of Lincoln.
Before retiring Cheryl was employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant at the former Cartie's Health Center of Central Falls.
