Cumberland DUI arrests rising

CUMBERLAND – Local police say they arrested nearly twice as many people for drunken driving in 2012 as they did the previous year.
Sixty people were arrested for driving under the influence last year, a whopping 94 percent increase over the 31 DUI arrests that were made in 2011, Police Chief John R. Desmarais noted in the Cumberland Police Department’s annual report, which was presented to the Town Council last Wednesday.

PAWTUCKET — Just because the Pawtucket Red Sox are three wins away from clinching yet another Governors’ Cup championship, it doesn’t mean the roster is untouchable.

Even amidst playoff competition, the Triple-A outfit remains at the beck and call of the parent club. The regular-season practice of providing reinforcements on a need basis does not get a reprieve just because of what teams like the PawSox have lined up over the next several days.

CUMBERLAND — With exactly 13:24 left in regulation, Cumberland High head coach Stefanie Capone-Bello called a timeout to express her dismay at her troops failing to heed her halftime advice.
“Girls, we just talked about this!” she stated to the huddle around her. “We need to improve, or we’re not getting anyway. You’re still swinging at the ball instead of passing it. Now let’s do a better job!”

BLOCK ISLAND - Walter Clifford Littlefield, 83, a past resident of Block Island, Rhode Island and Seekonk, Massachusetts died Friday, August 30, 2013 at Elmhurst Extended Care in Providence, after a long battle with Parkinsons Disease.
He was the cherished husband of the late Priscilla J. (Macomber) Littlefield, father of Christina D. Littlefield, brother of the late Marilyn Littlefield Rose, uncle to Bernice Rose Dangelas and the late Clifford M. Rose.

PAWTUCKET - John P. Asermely, 81, of Pawtucket, passed away peacefully at home, Saturday, September 7, 2013. He was the husband of the late Victorine (Nassaney) Asermely. Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Elias and Jamelia (Monsour) Asermely.
John was a navy veteran of the Korean War and was active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, branch of Damascus. He, along with his brothers, owned Asermely Brothers Service Station. He also owned and operated the former Asermely's Market. He later was a bus driver for RIPTA for 16 years, retiring in 1996.

SMITHFIELD - Kosteer, Virginia L.,88, of Greenville, died Friday. She was the widow of Alfred Kosteer, mother of Daniel Kosteer and his wife, Rita and Deborah Adler and her husband, Bruce, grandmother of Nick and Neil Adler and Jennifer and Kimberly Kosteer and sister of George Gibney of South Attleboro. She was the sister of the late Gloria Gibney.
She had worked at JP Coates, the State of Rhode Island and Edward Gatta Associates before retiring. She enjoyed sewing and was an amateur artist.

PAWTUCKET - Jean M. (Smith) Caron, 75, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 8, 2013 surrounded by her family at the Philip Hulitar Home & Hospice Center, Providence, A lifelong resident of Pawtucket, she was a daughter of the late Arthur J., Sr. and Mona H. (Casey) Smith.
Jean was a homemaker and former member of the Pawtucket Country Club; the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Junior Womens Club. Above all she was a devoted and loving mother; grandmother and great-grandmother. Jean also cared for and loved her cat, Daisy.
