YWCA celebrates women’s achievements; Cano-Morales, Hay honored

LINCOLN — YWCA Rhode Island Thursday honored 12 “Women of Achievement,” including Woonsocket’s Jacqueline L. Dowdy, Sally Ann Hay of Lincoln, and Central Falls native Anna Cano-Morales at its ninth annual awards luncheon at Kirkbrae Country Club.

Among the honorees was Quota International in Woonsocket and Pawtucket/Central Falls, which was recognized as Organization of the Year.

Pawtucket Arts Festival unspools weekend film fest

PAWTUCKET — Enjoy a feast for the senses, as the 14th annual Pawtucket Arts Festival continues through Sunday with its lineup of creative films, live music, refreshments and food.

All of the films are shown at the Blackstone Valley Visitor Center, 175 Main St., Pawtucket. The standard admission fee is $10 per day, and that price includes a free T-shirt from Mirror Image, music, food, drinks, short films and features.

Councilor: Bike crossing masks danger

PAWTUCKET — The Ten Mile River Greenway, a paved two-mile bike path that connects Slater Park in Pawtucket to the Kimberly Ann Rock Athletic Fields in East Providence, is a boon to local walkers, bicyclists and inline skaters. But one City Council member is expressing concerns about the safety of a new crosswalk on Armistice Boulevard that utilizes a solar-powered traffic signal.

Local coaching legends to be honored in effort to assist Boys & Girls Club of Cumberland Lincoln holiday hoops tourney

CUMBERLAND – Ed McVeigh served 18 years as a business teacher and coach at Central Falls High School, and – in that latter category – mentored his Warriors’ boys’ basketball teams to six divisional titles and one state title, that during the 1986-87 campaign, his first.

As a result, and because of his ability to teach the game and train not just athletes but young men, he unanimously became the only coach enshrined in the CFHS’ Athletic Hall of Fame last Oct. 11.
