PAWTUCKET - Edna B. Turmel, 79, passed Thursday July 4, 2013. She was the wife of Russell Turmel Sr. Born in Central Falls, a daughter of the late Victor and Charlotte (Seagrave) Lambert.
Besides her husband she leaves three children, Charlene Turmel, Bruce Lambert and Russell Turmel Jr, six grandchildren Darrell, Richard, Amy, Bruce, Adrienne, and Cheyenne, three great grandchildren Aiden, Kaylee and Shea. She was the sister of the late Dolores Patenaude and Arthur Lambert.

Lucien J. Pelletier

ALBION - Lucien J. Pelletier, 90, formerly of School St., Albion, died Friday at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. He was the loving husband of Ida I. (Floyd) Pelletier. They were married on September 27, 1944.
Born and raised in Albion, he was a son of the late Domina and Clarinda (Lusignan) Pelletier.
Mr. Pelletier served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a Boatswain's Mate First Class on the LCT 590 which was one of the first vessels to land at Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944.

Pineview claims third straight R.I. Big League crown

PAWTUCKET — Pineview Big League skipper Joe Clark revels in this kind of problem.

Thanks to his club’s simplistic 10-1 victory over East Greenwich in the championship game of the R.I. Big League (15-18) All-Star Tournament at its President’s Field home on Sunday afternoon, Clark and Co. earned a berth in the U.S. Eastern Regional Big League tourney in Dover, Del., one that begins Saturday.

With the title, unbeaten Pineview qualified for its third straight regional event, but will need to raise approximately $5,000 to make the trek.

Cumberland Town Council to consider Tucker Field project

CUMBERLAND – The Town Council is not scheduled to convene this month. Those plans have changed thanks to the proposed significant upgrades to the football and track portions of Tucker Field.

Parks and Recreation Director Michael Crawley confirmed late last week that everything’s in place for the council to gather this coming Wednesday night. The hope is that this special meeting will bring the town one step closer to commencing a construction project that some will say is long overdue.

PAWTUCKET – Pineview Big League skipper Joe Clark admitted his club didn't exhibit the kind of superb defense he expected from a lot of high school players in a 3-2 victory over East Greenwich on Tuesday night.

Sure, Clark and Co. won the game, but they looked rather shaky doing it.

That's why he chose to have a short conference with his young men prior to facing Edgewood/South Elmwood in the R.I. Big League (15-18) All-Star Tournament's winners-bracket final at the Doreen A. Tomlinson Athletic Complex' Presidents' Field on Friday night.

EAST PROVIDENCE — One of Rhode Island’s most historic tourist spots is the Crescent Park Looff Carousel, overlooking the bay in East Providence.
Built in 1895, Charles Looff constructed a “nationally recognized masterpiece” containing hand-carved figures, elaborate chariots and original band organ music to create the “total carousel experience.”
Rhode Island’s other Looff carousel is in Slater Park in Pawtucket.
Although the Crescent Park Carousel was always a popular place, it began to show signs of neglect as the years went by.

Teenager suffers burns in house fire

PAWTUCKET—A blaze heavily damaged a condominium unit at 39 Grotto Ave. on Friday afternoon and displaced 15 people.
According to Pawtucket Fire Capt. Bruce Burns, the emergency call came in at about 1:04 p.m. for a fire inside one unit of the triplex building. The unit where the fire occurred was heavily damaged by the blaze and will need renovation to be inhabitable. The other two units in the townhouse-style building sustained only smoke damage, he said.

Cops: Dad killed child via blunt force trauma

PAWTUCKET — The father of a 10-year-old city girl who brought her, beaten and unconscious, to Miriam Hospital on Wednesday has now been charged with her murder.
The suspect, Jorge DePina, 32, of 48 Knowles St., had earlier been charged by police with first-degree child abuse and cruelty to or neglect of child in connection with the case involving his daughter, Aleida DePina.

CENTRAL FALLS - Antoinette (Demty) Keough, 90, passed away Thursday, July 4, 2013 at Mount St Rita Health Centre in the presence of her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Vincent H. Keough who died in 1993. They were married May 15, 1955. Born in Central Falls, she was a daughter of the late Farjallah and Effifie (Kabbaze) Demty.

PAWTUCKET - Janina "Jen" J. (Borek) Brown, 90, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 5, 2013. She was the beloved wife of Kenneth A. Brown; together they would have celebrated 63 years of marriage in August. Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late John and Bertha (Sypek) Borek.
Jen was a communicant of St. Teresa Church for many years. She enjoyed gardening and cooking, but above all she was devoted to her loving family.

LINCOLN - Ruth F. (Pearson) Johnston, 93, a retired teacher and church musician, formerly of Iron Forge Road died Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Scalabrini Villa, North Kingstown. She was the wife of the late William H. Johnston.
Born in Providence, the daughter of the late Clarence and Frances (Harkness) Pearson, she had lived in Lincoln since 1976, previously living in Central Falls and Pawtucket.

PAWTUCKET - Monica P. (Ladysz) Sawyer, 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 4, 2013. She was the beloved wife of the late William T. Sawyer. Born in Central Falls, she was a daughter of the late Alexander and Mary (Dzezna) Ladysz.
Monica was the Supervisor of the Pricing Department at ITT, Royal Electric, Pawtucket, over 40 years until retiring in 1984. She was a communicant of St. Teresa Church, Pawtucket, and also a member of the St. Teresa Seniors Club.
Monica leaves a niece and a nephew. She was the sister of the late Helen M. LaCroix.

EAST PROVIDENCE - John "Sonny" W. Naismith, Sr., 77, of Rumford, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 3, 2013. He was the beloved husband of the late Ann C. (Grzenda) Naismith. Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late John L. & Wilhelmina (Robertson) Naismith. Sonny was the Foreman at Standard Film, Co., East Providence over 40 years until retiring in 2003. He enjoyed fishing and camping, and had honorably served in the US Coast Guard Reserves.

SIDNEY, OHIO - John Peter Kaplan, 87, of Sidney, Ohio, passed away from cancer on July 3, 2013. John was born on October 16, 1925 to Peter J. and Anna (Tobias) Kaplan, who are deceased. He was raised in Valley Falls, Rhode Island. John married Farrel L. (Adams) Kaplan on March 4, 1956 in Harrod, Ohio and later the marriage was blessed by Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sidney, Ohio. She survives.

CUMBERLAND - Elizabeth (Bosworth) Thulier, 84, passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2013 in Neptune, New Jersey. She was a resident of Central Falls and Cumberland, and most recently Colts Neck, New Jersey.
She was predeceased by her husband, Claude A. Thulier; her parents, Warren M. Bosworth, Sr, and Hedvig (Johnson) Bosworth; and her brothers, Warren M. Bosworth, Jr. and Charles Bosworth.

CUMBERLAND – The old phrase “Familiarity breeds contempt” took a beating at the Arnold Mills Four-Mile Road Race on steamy Fourth of July morning.

Perhaps a better way to put the overall mood after Northeastern University junior-to-be Brian Doyle, the 20-year-old son of former Ocean State marathon great Bobby Doyle, crossed the finish line in a cautious but solid winning time of 21:07: The mutual admiration society.
