John F. Andrade

PAWTUCKET - John F. Andrade, 95, of West Lawn Avenue, Pawtucket died on Monday, June 24, 2013. He was the husband of Gloria (Pita) Andrade. They were married 65 years.
Mr. Andrade was born in Pawtucket, the son of the late Mariano and Mary (Mederois) Andrade. He was a machine operator at American Insulated Wire for many years.
Besides his wife Gloria, Mr. Andrade is survived by his son Michael Andrade of Pawtucket, his brother Joseph Andrade and his sister Natalie Schiavino. He was the father of the late John Joseph Andrade.

PAWTUCKET - Philip J. Teves, 30, of Cottage Street, Pawtucket, died Tuesday at his home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He was the husband of Kaitlin S. (Mooney) Teves.
Philip was born in Pawtucket, the son of Joseph and Zelia (Barbeiro) Teves. He worked as a loader for UPS and was a follower of all the New England sports teams except football where he was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys.
Besides his wife and parents, he is survived by his daughter, Kenzie Teves, a brother Jeremy Teves and a sister Lisa Teves.

PAWTUCKET - John P. Donais, 87, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2013. Born in Fall River, a son of the late John and Rose (Roppe) Donais, he resided in Pawtucket most of his life. John was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, he served in Europe with the 70th and 3rd Infantry Divisions. He was employed as a Quality Control Inspector at Corning Glass Works and later G.T.E for 45 years before retiring in 1988.

PAWTUCKET - Jose Carlos Dias, 68, entered into eternal life on Monday after an illness. He was the husband of Maria F. (Machado) Dias. Jose was born in Terceira, the Azores, a son of the late Jose and Diolinda (deJesus) Dias.
He formerly was a house painter and later became the general maintenance man for the former St. Joseph's Church, now Holy Family Parish of Pawtucket. He and his wife Maria worked at St. Joseph's for several years. He had been a member of "Amigos de Terceira" before his illness.

Hernandez charged with murder

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) — New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was arrested Wednesday and charged with murder in the shooting death of a friend prosecutors say had angered the NFL player at a nightclub a few days earlier by talking to the wrong people.

Hernandez, 23, was taken from his North Attleborough home in handcuffs just over a week after Boston semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd's bullet-riddled body was found in an industrial park a mile away.

Stricker, Van Pelt capture CVS Caremark Charity Classic title in record-breaking fashion

BARRINGTON – Local legend Billy Andrade knew he and playing partner Bill Haas slowly had been creeping up the leaderboard at this 15th annual CVS Caremark Charity Classic on humid Tuesday, but never knew just how close they were to the front-runners, the duo of Steve Stricker and Bo Van Pelt.
When Haas knocked down a 10-foot birdie putt on the 452-yard, par-four 13th to move he and Andrade to 19-under, the board just behind the green indicated they had sliced the gap to a mere shot.

BARRINGTON – There’s always something so reassuring when an event such as the CVS Caremark Charity Classic concludes on this note, “See you next year.”

The words – echoed by Bristol native and co-host Billy Andrade shortly after the winning tandem of Steve Stricker and Bo Van Pelt took their bows on the 18th green at Rhode Island Country Club – helped in providing reassurance that the CVS event will feature a 16th installment.

Familiar faces await Middlebrooks in Pawtucket

PAWTUCKET – Will Middlebrooks does not need Pawtucket manager Gary DiSarcina or hitting coach Dave Joppie – two names who have previous player-coach relationships with the scuffling third baseman – to get in his face and flat-out tell the owner of a .192 big-league batting average this season where the areas of improvement lie.

“He knows what he needs to do,” said DiSarcina in anticipation of Middlebrooks’ arrival at McCoy Stadium on Wednesday, one day after getting informed by Boston skipper John Farrell that his season-long offensive funk had earned him a demotion to the Triple-A ranks.

Local clinic tied to meningitis outbreak

LINCOLN – A local pain management clinic has received a federal court subpoena for records tied to a national outbreak of fungal meningitis resulting from tainted pharmaceuticals last year.
Ocean State Pain Management of Blackstone Valley Place is one of 76 clinics around the country that federal health officials say dispensed contaminated drugs from New England Compounding Pharmacy in Framingham.

C.F. chemical fire draws dozens of responders

CENTRAL FALLS — Brutally hot outside temperatures and a fire and chemical spill inside a paint factory combined to cause a hazardous and uncomfortable scene for dozens of area firefighters on Monday.
Firefighters responded to the five-alarm blaze at around 11:30 a.m. at General Polymer Inc., an industrial paints and coatings company located at 59 Foundry St. The company occupies a three-story, 75,000-square foot brick mill building located in a densely populated neighborhood off Broad Street.

PAWTUCKET - Virginia D. Thomas, 67, of Pawtucket passed away peacefully Monday at Miriam Hospital with her loved ones by her side. She was the wife of Frank Thomas Jr. Born in Pawtucket she was the daughter of Doris (Masse) Paquin of Pawtucket and the late Henry L. Paquin.
Mrs. Thomas was employed as a registered nurse at Grandview Nursing Center until her retirement. She was a graduate of Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.

EAST PROVIDENCE - Helen M. Bozek, 76, of Riverside passed away Saturday June 22, 2013 at her residence. She was the beloved wife of John M. Bozek. They were married for 50 years May 25, 2013.
Born in Pawtucket she was a daughter of Elsie (Stankevich) Fober of Pawtucket and the late Frank Fober Sr. She lived in Riverside for the past 3 years and was formerly of Pawtucket.
Before she retired Helen was employed as a Bookkeeper for her familys business, Michaels Meats of Cumberland and the former Michaels Boulevard Meats of Pawtucket.

LINCOLN - John A. Mercer, 90, of Lincoln and formerly of Pawtucket passed away on June 24, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Catherine E. (Smith) Mercer. Mr. Mercer was born in Pawtucket, the son of Ernest and Margaretta (Reilly) Mercer.
Mr. Mercer served his country in the US Army during World War II being deployed to the European Theatre. He retired from the Providence Journal Company after 40 years of service and was also a member of the Pawtucket Personnel Board from more than 30 years.
