PawSox unable to complete comeback, fall to Braves

May 16, 2013

PAWTUCKET — This comeback ran out of steam.
After falling behind by a 4-0 score and getting blanked for 7 2/3 innings by Gwinnett Braves righthander Omar Poveda, the Pawtucket Red Sox found a way to battle back in the last two innings off him and reliever Wirfin Obispo and nearly pull off an amazing victory.
But it wasn’t meant to be for the PawSox, who soon found themselves trying to battle back from a 6-1 deficit in their final swings and ended up with a 6-4 loss – their fourth defeat in their last five games – on Thursday night before a small gathering at McCoy Stadium.

Budget picture looking less rosy

May 16, 2013

PAWTUCKET — Last month, school administrators expressed optimism about the proposed school budget for fiscal year 2014, citing an anticipated increase in state aid and expected funding from the city. However, due to the city administration's apparent decision to not provide $511,463 as part of “maintenance of effort” and other adjustments requested by the School Committee, the latest draft is looking decidedly less rosy.

Another milestone for Meals on Wheels

May 16, 2013

The Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island assistance program for the state’s elderly residents hit another milestone Wednesday — serving its 17 millionth meal to Clara Ramos, 80, of Providence.
The highlight meal, this year served by Gov. Lincoln Chafee, is one of a long list of such events marking the work put in by the organization’s volunteers since the 1970s. That work has not only helped elderly residents maintain their nutritional health but also their independence and ability to remain at home.

PawSox' Hamilton deals with injured wrist; Chris Martin's scoreless streak up to 24 innings

May 16, 2013

PAWTUCKET – When the manager mentions “small crack in his bone” in the same sentence as the player’s wrist, it’s easy to dwell on the worst-case scenario.
Gary DiSarcina, however, stated that the Pawtucket Red Sox are in no rush to place first baseman/outfielder Mark Hamilton on the disabled list. On the same day that saw Hamilton honored as International League Hitter of the Week, the 29-year-old jammed his wrist while attempting to make a play in left field.
