PawSox top Lehigh Valley; Ortiz is 0-for-4 again

April 17, 2013

PAWTUCKET — At this stage of his rehab assignment, David Ortiz is more concerned about feeling good when he steps out of the batter’s box as opposed to actual results.
The Red Sox star came out of Wednesday’s contest admitting that his injured heels are doing just fine. He finished hitless in four at-bats as Pawtucket bid adieu to a two-game losing streak with a 6-1 triumph against Lehigh Valley.

Maier makes good first impression with PawSox

April 17, 2013

PAWTUCKET — If first impressions do indeed count, then Mitch Maier put his best foot forward upon formally introducing himself to PawSox manager Gary DiSarcina.
“He’s very driven and focused,” was the takeaway DiSarcina had of Pawtucket’s new outfield addition. “I didn’t have to ask him to come into the office and go over the signs. He walked right in that first day.”

SRA baseball team bows to North Providence, 4-2

April 17, 2013

PAWTUCKET — Minutes after St. Raphael Academy had suffered a 4-2 Division I defeat to previously winless North Providence High at Vets Park early Wednesday afternoon, veteran head coach Tom Sorrentine stood by the first-base line, trying to wrap his thoughts around what had just transpired.
Think of it: Senior southpaw Zach Mitsmenn scattered only six hits and three walks while whiffing a whopping 11, but still took the loss and, incredibly, fell to 1-1.

Organizers say R.I. marathons will go on

April 17, 2013

Charles Breagy, who directs the Navigant Credit Union Running Festival
Half Marathon and 5K in Pawtucket — scheduled to be held this year on May 5 — and the CVS Caremark Downtown 5K in Providence — slated for Sept. 22 — says the two races will go on as planned.
“These races are still in place to happen. We’re revisiting security and we’ve reached out to police, but as of today, the races will go on,” Breagy said.

PawSox with Mass. roots react to Boston Marathon tragedy

April 16, 2013

PAWTUCKET — For members of the PawSox family with Massachusetts blood running through their veins, the horrific and tragic events that marred the Boston Marathon hit particularly hard.
“It’s a special day for race fans and baseball fans; there’s a (Boston Bruins) game at night. It’s a great time for the town,” explained manager Gary DiSarcina, a native of Malden, Mass. and current resident of Plymouth. “When you least expect it, that’s when these things happen.”

Ortiz goes 0-for-4 in PawSox's loss to Lehigh Valley

April 16, 2013

PAWTUCKET — What David Ortiz is attempting to do is adhere to spring-training protocol.
The question is, will the Red Sox slugger be able to get everything ironed out over eight or so at-bats in the coming days with the Pawtucket Red Sox? In 2010, Ortiz received 62 at-bats in spring training and equaled the total the following year. In 2012, he collected 57 Grapefruit League at-bats.

Lincoln survives close call with Mount in 6-5 win

April 16, 2013

WOONSOCKET — In an impressive 26-game win streak that dates back to its season opener a year ago, Lincoln has experienced only a handful of close games that not only tested the team’s mettle, but also presented some anxious moments for its players, coaches, and fans.
But while most of those tight contests were decided by three or more runs, only one was a one-run nailbiter — Tuesday afternoon’s chilly Division I affair against host and longtime foe Mount St. Charles.

Times sports editor recounts terror of Boston bombing

April 16, 2013

Blackstone Valley Sports Editor Eric Benevides knew he would not run one of his best marathons when he set out on Monday’s 26.2-mile Boston Marathon course, and that may well have spared him the horrific scene marking the race memories of many others.
Two bombs detonated near the course’s finish line killed three people, including an 8-year-old boy, by last night’s tally and wounded scores of others as Benevides and his wife, Bozena Chmielewski, were still running the 26.2-mile course.

IronPigs cool off PawSox; Ortiz late scratch with heel pain

April 15, 2013

PAWTUCKET – The Pawtucket Red Sox, already off to its finest start to a season in club history, seemed poised to move to 10-1 after holding a 3-1 cushion through seven innings on Monday night.
But righty reliever Chris Carpenter surrendered the Lehigh Valley IronPigs five runs in the top of the eighth, and the PawSox ultimately suffered an 8-3 International League-North beatdown before 3,849 fans at McCoy Stadium.

Saints walk off with tough loss against Villa Novans

April 15, 2013

WOONSOCKET — A walk-off win that results in Woonsocket High’s first triumph of the season. That was the narrative of the Villa Novans’ come-from-behind performance on Monday.
You hate to associate “must win” with a game that takes place during the second week of the regular season. Standing at 0-2 in Division I-North and 0-3 overall, Woonsocket understood that halting the slide was imperative against a St. Raphael outfit that was seeking to maintain its pristine ways.

Area runners react to the terror

April 15, 2013

Cumberland High School running Coach Tom Kenwood had believed Monday would be like any other Patriots Day when he took a bunch of his team members to Wellesley to watch runners in Boston Marathon pass by.
Patriots Day, after all, has always been a good day to visit Boston for a chance to see runners in the city’s historic Marathon and maybe to see the Red Sox play or take the kids to a museum.
But the explosion of bombs at the finish line for the marathon’s 117th running changed all that while leaving thousands on the marathon course and people in general wondering why.
