Nancy Kathleen Smith

GERMANY - Nancy Kathleen Smith, 72, of Germany and formerly of Pawtucket, passed away February 24, 2013 in Germany.
Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late William Collins and Katherine (Leonard) O'Neill. Nancy was an educator of elementary school children for the Department of Defense for the last twenty years in Germany. Prior to that she was a school teacher at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Bristol.

PAWTUCKET - Gail M. (Lemieux) DeCarlo, 57, passed away unexpectedly at home on Saturday, March 2, 2013.
She was the beloved daughter of Ida B. (Costa) and Albert E. Cartwright of Pawtucket and the beloved daughter of the late Donald Lemieux. Gail was an avid reader and enjoyed completing puzzles; going to the beach and eating Chinese Food.

PAWTUCKET - Regan, Helen, 92, of Pawtucket passed away Monday, March 04, 2013 at home surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Maurice Regan. Born in Rockford, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Margaret (O'Malley) Phillip. She had lived in Pawtucket over sixty years.

CENTRAL FALLS - Norbey "Johnny" Gonzalez, 33, passed unexpectedly on March 2nd.
He was the husband of Kelly Greene.
Born in Cali, Colombia, he was a son of Elizabeth Ortega and the late Humberto DeJesus Gonzalez.
Norbey had been employed as a truck driver by Management Services.
Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by a son, Johnny Gonzalez, two daughters, Justina Gonzalez and Kathleen Joanna Rivera, a sister, Duffay Salazar and other sibling in Colombia.

CUMBERLAND - Lillian A. Medeiros (Trudeau), 89, a lifelong Cumberland resident passed away Sunday in the St. Antoine Residence, North Smithfield.
Born in Central Falls she was the daughter of the late George and Bella A. (Dube) Trudeau.
She was employed by the Hindley Mfg. Co., Cumberland for 30 years until her retirement.

Public hearing Thursday on CDBG grant

EAST PROVIDENCE — The city is soliciting proposals for 2013 Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for community development and housing needs and will hold a public hearing on the application Thursday evening.
The hearing will give residents the chance to offer input on which projects should be prioritized in the city's grant application, due in May. This year, the city is applying for $620,175 in grant funding, which will be available for programming during the fiscal year that begins July 1 and ends June 30, 2014.

‘Parents for Peaceful Communities’ event slated Saturday, March 9

PAWTUCKET – A first-ever “Parents for Peaceful Communities” conference will be held at Jenks Junior High School, 350 Division St. (across from McCoy Stadium), on Saturday, March 9 from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The conference is intended to afford parents the opportunity to receive important information through workshops related to their children’s educational achievement and interact with other parents to help build a safer, more informed and more peaceful community.

City side of budget ended ’12 in the black

PAWTUCKET – The city’s General Fund ended Fiscal 2012 with a surplus of $2.7 million before allocations to rebuild the city’s reserve fund, according to the annual report of the city’s outside auditor.
The surplus was achieved by total revenues exceeding budgeted spending allocations, with positive revenues due to tight fiscal controls, tax receipts, interest on taxes and state aid.
The surplus allowed increases to the city reserves fund, which over a period of several years was tapped almost to depletion to help balance annual budgets.

PAWTUCKET - James W. Trudell of Manton Street, Pawtucket passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2013. He was the husband of Mona (Viens) Trudell.
Mr. Trudell was born in Pawtucket the son of the late Harold and Ellen Trudell. He was a Korean War Veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Trudell was a supervisor for the Copper and Brass Company in North Attleboro, Massachusetts for many years.

PAWTUCKET - Dorothy H. Fitzpatrick (Earnshaw), 95, of Pawtucket died March 3, 2013 at Home and Hospice Care of RI. She was the wife of the late Fred R. Fitzpatrick. Mrs. Fitzpatrick was born in Fall River, MA, daughter of the late Robert and Eva (Hall) Earnshaw. She was a homemaker and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Second-year Lincoln/Cumberland co-op team advances to Div. II girls' championship series

PAWTUCKET — Once the final horn had sounded, Lincoln/Cumberland Co-op head coach Dick Ernst spoke to his enthused pride of Lions in its second-floor locker room above the Lynch Arena ice on Saturday night before he strolled into the nearby press box.
There, he took a seat in a cushy leather chair and grinned, “That was something. That was something! Did you see that passing? Unbelievable!”
Ernst had been referring to his squad's 5-1 beatdown of the Narragansett/North Kingstown/South Kingstown in the second game of this best-of-three R.I. Division II Tournament semifinal set.

Moses Brown ousts SRA girls in Div. II quarterfinals

PROVIDENCE — There were bodies scrambling around the hardwood and guttural signs of exhaust.
There was also a thrilling comeback bid by a St. Raphael outfit that trailed by a dozen points with just over five minutes remaining. Alas, the quest to overtake Moses Brown fell just short as the Saints’ season ended in a 44-40 loss to Moses Brown in Sunday’s R.I. Division II Tournament quarterfinal-round contest at Rhode Island College.

Lincoln, Tolman advance to hockey semifinals

WEST WARWICK -- Unlike the other three Division II quarterfinal-round series in the state, unbeaten Lincoln was able to sweep its best-of-three series with eighth-seeded East Greenwich on Saturday at the West Warwick Civic Center.
For the second straight night, the Lions skated to a 3-2 win over the Avengers, but unlike their victory in the series opener, Lincoln (19-0-1) needed to work overtime to put away its longtime foe.

Celebrating St. Patty's Day in Pawtucket

A large crowd turns out for the 31st annual St. Patrick's Day parade, which stepped off from McCoy Stadium at noon, and made its way through the streets of Pawtucket to the reviewing stand in front of City Hall on Roosevelt Avenue Saturday. A colorful crowd of all ages lined the streets to see marching bands, floats, police color guards, local dignitaries and many others take part in the popular Pawtucket tradition honoring the feast of St. Patrick's Day and hosted by Mayor Donald Grebien.

Local officers honored for curbing narcotics on ‘Heroin Highway’

PROVIDENCE – Two East Providence police officers and another from Pawtucket were among 17 law enforcement officers and federal prosecutors honored Friday with a top U.S. Department of Justice award for curbing narcotics trafficking on the state’s “Heroin Highway,” the U.S. Attorney’s office announced.
The notorious stretch of I-195 from Providence to Cape Cod has been used for many years to transport heroin to street-level drug dealers and drug users, federal prosecutors say.

Budget Commission abolished

EAST PROVIDENCE — The state-appointed Budget Commiss-ion that has been overseeing the city’s finances for the past 15 months has been abolished and will end its tenure on March 28.
Taking over the Budget Commission's duties beginning March 29 will be a municipal administration and finance officer or AFO, who will be responsible for the overall budgetary and financial administration of East Providence going forward.
The exiting plan was announced and outlined at the Budget Commission's meeting on Thursday.

WOONSOCKET -- Jaryd Dulieu couldn’t have picked a perfect time to score the biggest goal of his high school career.
The senior co-captain lit the lamp on a pass from Jake Salisbury 3:51 into overtime to lift the Clippers to a 3-2 triumph over the Rogers/Tiverton/Rocky Hill co-op squad on Friday night in the opening contest of their best-of-three Division II quarterfinal-round series at Adelard Arena.

PAWTUCKET — In a free-wheeling contest that saw a total of 15 penalties called for a whopping 30 minutes, Tolman High recorded a 4-1 triumph over Cranston East in the first game of a best-of-three R.I. Division III Tournament quarterfinal series at Lynch Arena on Friday night.
Junior Jared Pedro, who had been nursing a dislocated shoulder, closed with a pair of goals, despite playing as a defenseman to keep the injury out of harm's way. Elder brother and senior tri-captain Ryan Pedro manufactured a goal and two assists.

PROVIDENCE — As if on cue, God Shammgod started talking about Ricky Ledo’s situation.
Mind you, there wasn’t a lead-in question posed to Shammgod with the intent of correlating his two-year playing stint at Providence College to the same temptations of leaving school prematurely that Ledo will deal with soon enough. Sitting in Alumni Hall’s cafeteria the other day, the conversation with the now 36-year-old Shammgod began with how much he’s enjoyed being back on PC’s campus as an undergrad student and a member of Ed Cooley’s basketball staff.
