RI DOT to close Exit 27 temporarily

PAWTUCKET — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RI DOT) will temporarily close Exit 27 (downtown) from I-95 southbound in Pawtucket for approximately six weeks beginning Monday, March 18.
This closure will allow for the demolition of the temporary exit ramp, as well as the transition to the permanent exit to downtown Pawtucket through the Pawtucket River Bridge Replacement Project.

New owner of Corina's Pub looks to change clientele

PAWTUCKET — Despite a name like “Rebels,” Jeanne Michaud says she wants to attract a more peaceful clientele to the Smithfield Avenue bar that is currently known as Corina's Pub.
Michaud, of Uxbridge, Mass., appeared at a public hearing on Wednesday before the City Council's Board of License Commissioners to speak about her request to obtain a transfer of liquor and food licenses. She told the board that she plans to lease the existing space to operate a pub, featuring live music, with her daughter.

PawSox add Socci to radio broadcast booth

PAWTUCKET – The Pawtucket Red Sox announced Friday that they have added Bob Socci to the radio broadcast booth for the upcoming season. Socci will partner with another newcomer, Jeff Levering who was hired last month, as the duo will broadcast all 144 PawSox games on WHJJ-AM (920) and the 13-station PawSox Radio Network.

RAYMOND, NH- Margaret A. McNeil, 70, of Raymond, NH, died Thursday at home. She was the wife of Thomas F. McNeil.
Born in Providence a daughter of the late David F. and Ellen E. (Waterman) Leamy, she lived most of her life in Rhode Island moving to New Hampshire 15 years ago.

ATTLEBORO- Martha (Volkle) LaBree, 78, of Attleboro, formerly of Pawtucket, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 7, 2013. She was the beloved wife of the late William H. LaBree.
Born in Dillingen, Germany, she was a daughter of the late Reinhold and Theresia (Butscher) Volkle.

Former pro hoopster tells story to area students

WOONSOCKET --- Chris Herren did a fair amount of traveling during his collegiate and professional basketball careers, not only touring arenas throughout the United States, but also finishing his hoop career overseas in Europe and Asia.
It’s been 6½ years since Herren last played professionally, but these days, he’s still flying coast to coast and racking up frequent flyer miles.

Ciolfi’s crew could end up trapped in a spider web with little or no chance of escape.

PAWTUCKET - Joseph E. Everton Sr., 53, passed peacefully March 6th with his family by his side. He was the fianc of Linda
Carvalho.
Born in Attleboro, he was the son of the late Clinton and Dorothy (Shaw) Everton.
Joseph had been employed by Masbro Polishing for 33 years.
Besides his fianc he is survived by two sons, Joseph E. Everton Jr, and Trever Everton, two daughters, Nicole Gay and Barbara Pereira, a brother, Paul Everton, a sister, Deborah
Hall, 4 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Lincoln/Cumberland Co-op drops Game 1 of Div. II title series in double OT

PROVIDENCE — In three previous Division II-DeCosta meetings this winter, the Lincoln/Cumberland Co-op squad had surrendered 13 goals while notching just four of its own against the defending state D-II champions Barrington/Mount Hope/Portsmouth girls.
In those tilts, the Lions suffered defeats of 6-1 on Dec. 15, 3-2 on Feb. 16 and 4-1 nine days later.

ORLANDO, FL. - Glynn, Grace Ann (Rogers), 94. Born January 19, 1919. Died February 23, 2013 in Orlando, Florida. Grace was a lifelong resident of Pawtucket.
As a single mom with two children she worked in the war effort of WWII while living with and supporting her own grandmother. In 1950 she formed her own business, designing, manufacturing, and selling a variety of satin and lace floral supply products to florists throughout New England. In her later years she maintained the business on a small scale until she was 85.

Two Valley men charged in stabbing

CUMBERLAND — A 32-year-old Woonsocket man and a 21-year-old Cumberland man have been charged in connection with the stabbing of a man at a Broad Street bar late Monday night, police said.
Clarence Mowry, of Woonsocket, was arrested early Tuesday morning by Cumberland police and charged with conspiracy, simple assault and disorderly conduct. He was arraigned before the 6th District Court and released with surety bail.
Shawn Plunkett, of Cumberland, was taken into custody around noon Tuesday and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.

Lincoln/Cumberland Co-op faces tall order in Division II finals

CUMBERLAND — During the early afternoon hours Sunday, approximately 16 hours after what was most certainly the most impactful and thrilling triumph in the two-year history of the Lincoln/Cumberland Co-op girls' hockey program, senior captain Jean Bray and her teammates congregated at freshman phenom Cassidy Simanski's home.
They did so for what Bray called a “Hair-Dyeing Party.

Looking for a good semifinal-round series to follow this weekend?
It’s going to be awfully tough to pick just one.
Two series contain neighboring teams battling each other. Another features the region’s best parochial school team taking on the state’s top public school squad, and the fourth is a battle between two teams that saw two of their three regular-season games end in ties.
The best-of-three action begins on Friday, and the Division I series featuring Burrillville and Cranston West kicks off the schedule with an early 7 p.m. game at Levy Arena.

CUMBERLAND - Maria J. Pires, 89, of Elizabeth St., passed away Monday in the Grandview Nursing Center, Cumberland. She was the wife of the late Antonio Pires.
Born in the Valley Falls section of Cumberland she was the daughter of the late Miguel and Maria (Guerra) Salustio.
Mrs. Pires was a textile worker for many years until her retirement. She was a communicant of St. Patrick Church, Cumberland.

Mr. Orlowski was born in Central Falls, the son of the late Joseph and Regina Orlowski. He was employed by Conlon Movers for many years. Al was a United States Army Veteran of WWII. He was an avid bowler at the East Providence Lanes.

Born in Pawtucket, Madelyn was a daughter of the late Peter A. and Ella (Cormier) Sherry.
She had been employed by the former Swank Jewelry and Fuller Box Company for many years. She was a former president of the Ladies Auxiliary Pawtucket FOP.

PROVIDENCE — As most people expected, No. 1 seeded Middletown and defending champion Juanita Sanchez won their Division III semifinal-round games on Monday night at Rhode Island College.
But they didn’t leave the Tripp Athletic Center without getting tough battles from Davies and North Smithfield, which despite coming up short in their respective bids to reach Sunday’s title game at URI’s Ryan Center, turned in admirable performances.
