Pearson vows to focus on business climate

PROVIDENCE – Freshman Sen. Ryan Pearson, a Cumberland-Lincoln Democrat, described a series of visits he made to businesses and agencies last week as part of a campaign promise he made to focus on economic development and improving the state’s business climate.
He took tours of the Blackstone Valley Community Health Center (BVCHC), Twin River, the Quonset Development Corporation (QDC) and the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Manville Hill Road bridge to reopen next month

LINCOLN – Structural concerns over the Manville Hill Road Bridge have blocked off a major travel route between Lincoln and Cumberland — but hopefully not for long.
Bryan Lucier, a spokesman for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, said Thursday that plans are in the works to open the bridge as soon as next month, even if that is only a temporary solution to the bridge concerns.
“What we are doing is putting out an emergency contract to make repairs to the bridge,” Lucier said.

NORTON - Doris Nancy (Connors) Audette, 77, of South Worcester Street, Norton, died on December 30, 2012 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro following a brief illness. She was the beloved and cherished wife of Richard R. Audette to whom she was married on September 28, 1957.
Born at the family home in Cumberland, Rhode Island on April 3, 1935, she was a daughter of the late Daniel E. Connors, Sr. and Daisy (Harrison) Connors Bedard. Raised and educated in Pawtucket, Mrs. Audette resided in Attleboro before moving to Norton in 1969.

CUMBERLAND - Serafim "Sam" Costa, 92, of Winter St. passed away Friday in the Woonsocket Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was the beloved husband of the late Helen R. (Hail) Costa.
Born in South Attleboro he was the son of the late Julio and Mary (Purficacao) Costa. He resided in Cumberland over 50 years.
He was employed as a machinist by the former Standard Nut & Bolt Co., Cumberland for over 20 years until his retirement

PAWTUCKET - Nicolas El-Khaouli, 64, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 3, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Fatat (Selfany) El-Khaouli for forty-one years.
Born in Beirut, Lebanon, a son of the late Fouad and Mariam El-Khaouli, he came to the United States in 1993 and settled in Pawtucket. Nicolas was a member and Subdeacon at St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church, and was a member and Past Grand Master of the Rising Sun Lodge No. 30, East Providence.

PAWTUCKET - Lily (Harris) Watkinson, 93, went to her eternal home Thursday, January 3, 2013 at Linn Health Care Center, East Providence. She was the wife of the late Arthur Watkinson.
Born in England, a daughter of the late Ernest and Lily (Booth) Harris, she had lived in Pawtucket for the past 64 years. She was a graduate of Kinyon's Commercial School. Mrs. Watkinson was an office worker and in later years loved her work educating customers about fabrics in local stores before retiring.

Police seek three in home invasion

CENTRAL FALLS — Central Falls Police are searching for two men and a woman in connection with a Wednesday night home invasion that left a city man injured and robbed.
According to Central Falls Police, officers were dispatched to an apartment on Watson Street for a report of a breaking and entering. One of the tenants, Franklin Baxley, 36, was assaulted by his assailants and allegedly robbed of $1,200, police said. Baxley was transported to an area hospital for treatment. According to those present during the incident, no other items were taken.

St. Raphael ready to press forward minus standout Correa

When league unbeaten St. Raphael Academy takes the court Friday night at La Salle, the Saints will do so minus their star playmaker.
For the time being, senior point guard Charles Correa is out with a broken right hand. He’s presently sporting a cast, one that according to veteran head coach Tom “Saar” Sorrentine has a target removal date for the middle of the month. If everything checks out, Correa will then be fitted for a plastic splint that protects the ring and pinky finger.

Sawyer School closes

PROVIDENCE — The sudden closing of the privately-operated Sawyer School has left almost 300 students in limbo, but state education officials say they are trying to arrange help.
According to several news sources, the post-secondary trade and technical school located at 550 Hartford Ave. in Providence was closed as of Tuesday. Some students told the media they had arrived for classes and found the building shuttered while others said they had received a brief notice telling them classes had been “permanently suspended.”

RIVERSIDE - Earle C. Lewis, age 93, of Riverside Terrace, passed away on January 1, 2013 at Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island.
Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada he moved to the United States in 1949. Earle was a Sergeant in the Canadian army, serving in WWII in the European Theater. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythisius in New Glasgow. He was preceded in death by his parents B. A. Lewis and Ethel (Hardy) Lewis, 16 siblings and his wife of 50 years, Isabel S. (Grant) Lewis.

CUMBERLAND - Albert "Jimmy" J. Beaucage, 69, of Oak Hill Drive, Cumberland passed away Monday, Dec. 31, in the Oak Hill Nursing Home, Pawtucket. He was the husband of Eileen (Lariviere) Beaucage.
Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Charles and Yvonne (St. Hillaire) Beaucage. He resided in Cumberland for the past 33 years, previously residing in Lincoln.

THE VILLAGES, FL. - Leo J. Incerpi, 75, of The Villages and formerly of Cumberland passed away Monday in The Promise Hospital of Florida, Oxford, FL. He was the beloved husband of Mary M. (Boulais) Incerpi.
Born in Pawtucket he was the son of the late Ilio and Marie E. (Molhan) Incerpi-Soper. He resided in Florida for the past 7 years previously living in Cumberland.
He was employed as a supervisor for the Boston Concession Group for 25 years until his retirement. Leo was also a Life Member of the LeFoyer Club, Pawtucket.

She leaves 5 children: Anna H. Tetreault of New Bern, NC, Roy L. Brodeur of Cumberland, Br. Lucien L. Brodeur of Attleboro, MA, Arlene L. Brodeur of Central Falls and Linda A. Walker of Lincoln. 15 grandchildren, 27 great grand children and many nieces & nephews.

Born in Providence, she was the youngest of nine children of the late Charles and Jennie (Flynn) Boedeker. Agnes worked for the American Heart Association; Cherry & Webb; Home Insurance/Home Indemnity and New England Telephone. She was a longtime member of Newman Congregational Church, Rumford.

NORTH ATTLEBORO - Raymond J. Guimond, 60, of, North Attleboro, died unexpectedly at his residence on December 22, 2012. Husband of Lynda T. (Geraghty) Guimond.
Born in Attleboro on March 18, 1952, he was the son of the late Harvey and Theresa (Fournier) Guimond. He was a lifelong resident of North Attleboro and had attended Sacred Heart School and was a 1971 graduate of North Attleboro High School.
Mr. Guimond was employed as a section leader for the former Foxboro Company, now Invenys, for more than 40 years until his illness in July 2012.

General Assembly to focus on the economy

PROVIDENCE – The 2013 General Assembly session began Tuesday with leaders of both chambers emphasizing the importance of turning Rhode Island’s ailing economy around and improving its business climate.
Commencing his fourth term as Speaker of the House, Gordon Fox invoked the memory of Abraham Lincoln, saying, “The struggle of today is not altogether for today. It is for a vast future also.”

Democratic officials: Fiscal 'cliff' deal reached

WASHINGTON — Racing the clock, the White House sealed a New Year's Eve accord with Senate Republicans late Monday to neutralize across-the-board tax increases and spending cuts in government programs due to take effect at midnight, according to administration and Democratic officials.
Under the deal, taxes would remain steady for the middle class and rise at incomes over $400,000 for individuals and $450,000 for couples — levels higher than President Barack Obama had campaigned for in his successful drive for a second term in office.
