Each year, the Blackstone Valley boasts its share of amateur championship teams (from the high school ranks to the summer amateur leagues) and tremendous individual performances that rank among the very best in Rhode Island.
But itâs been quite some time since this region has seen an outpouring of success such as the events that transpired during 2013.
Yole M. Fairman
PAWTUCKET - Fairman, Yole M. "Nonnie" 94, of Pawtucket, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 30, 2013. She was the wife of the late Donald R. Fairman, Jr.
Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late Maurice and Olga (Bottai) Marini.
She worked as a lace inspector at the former Seekonk Lace Company for 40 years before retiring.
Loretta I. Valentine
SCOTTSBORO, ALABAMA - Loretta Irene (O'Brien) Valentine, 95, of Scottsboro, Alabama and formerly of Ridgewood Road, Pawtucket, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 30, 2013. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert F. Valentine, Sr. Born in Central Falls, the daughter of the late John J. and Loretta F. (McKenna) O'Brien, she resided in Pawtucket for sixty-one years before moving to Scottsboro five years ago.
Madeline M. McConnon
PAWTUCKET - Madeline M. McConnon, of Pawtucket, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Valley Falls, the daughter of the late John J. and Lena B. (Tracy) Callahan. She was the wife of the late Michael F. McConnon.
Madeline leaves her son-in-law, Donald LeBlanc, grandsons Brendan and J. Bradford LeBlanc all of Pawtucket. She is predeceased by her daughter, Eileen (McConnon) LeBlanc, brother John J. Callahan.
Devin J. Abbott
PAWTUCKET - Devin J. Abbott, "DJ", 15, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, December 27, 2013. He was a beloved son of Jennifer L. (LaDuke) Abbott and Joseph H. Abbott of Pawtucket.
Devin was a student at Tolman High School and had attended Davies Career and Technical High School, Lincoln. He attended Park Place Congregational Church where he was active in the fellowship. He was a member of the Tolman Swim Team and enjoyed skateboarding; making people laugh; visiting nursing homes and the elderly.
Dorothy M. Bascombe
CUMBERLAND - Dorothy M. (Vose) Bascombe, 92, of Old West Wrentham Road died Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket.
She was the wife of the late Willard E. Bascombe.
A lifelong resident of Cumberland, she was a daughter of the late Ornando F. and Madeline (Slocum) Vose.
She was employed by Tanury Brothers Jewelry Manufacturers of Lincoln for many years before retiring in 1965.

PAWTUCKET â âGood game, eh?â veteran official Frank Iannetta said with a smile as he stood in front of the scorerâs table with one minute left in Monday nightâs Division I contest between St. Raphael Academy and South Kingstown.
The Saints were clinging to a 47-46 lead at the time in one of those typically competitive high school games that seem to regularly occur at the Dennis Lynch Jr. Memorial Court. As Iannetta joked with the scorerâs table personnel, Saints coach Tom Sorrentine spoke to his team, trying to draw up a play for his best shooter, Graham Lynch.
PAWTUCKET â A Pawtucket man has been arrested by Warwick and Cumberland police and charged with a series of house breaks in Warwick.
George Bouffard, 56, of 49 Sumner St., Pawtucket, was arrested Friday at 11 a.m. in Cumberland by Warwick detectives and charged with multiple counts of breaking and entering. The police say the motive for the break-ins was "narcotics dependency."
CENTRAL FALLS - Frank Lukaszewski, 84, passed away Friday December 27, 2013 at Miriam Hospital. He was the husband of Hazel M. (LaCroix) Lukaszewski.
Born in Central Falls Frank was a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Drzymalska) Lukaszewski. He was a life long resident of Central Falls.
Before retiring Frank was employed as a Baker for the former National Bakery of Central Falls for many years.
Gail A. Rondeau
PAWTUCKET - Gail "Gee Are" A. Rondeau, 70, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 30, 2013. Born in Pawtucket, she was a daughter of the late Robert A. and Elizabeth F. (Thibodeau) Rondeau. "Gee Are" served in the United States Air Force and then worked at Pawtucket City Hall in the Zoning Department for 44 years until retiring three years ago. She enjoyed spending time with her family and her beloved cat, Mama. "Gee Are" loved animals and gave generously of herself to local animal shelters, particularly the Attleboro Animal Shelter.
PAWTUCKET - Angelo Squadrito, 97, of Pawtucket died on December 28, 2013.
He was the husband of Wanda (Brzozowski) Squadrito. They had been married over seventy years.
Mr. Squadrito was born in Pawtucket, the son of the late Domenic and Carmella (Calabro) Squadrito.
Mr. Squadrito was a machinist at the Industrial Machine Corporation for many years.

PAWTUCKET â When St. Raphael Academy decided to dedicate its Alumni Hall basketball court in memory of the late Dennis M. Lynch Jr., a revered Saints hoop coach back in the 1980s, the school and the Lynch family reached out to Wheeler School to provide the opposition.
CUMBERLAND â In the end, Woonsocket High took advantage of five turnovers in the final 3:37 while mustering an 11-0 flurry in the span of 2:43 to roll to a 63-51 triumph over Tolman in the championship game of the 41st annual Boys & Girls Club of Cumberland/Lincoln Roadshow Holiday Classic on Friday night.
It turned out to be the Villa Novansâ team-leading eighth in the history of the oldest holiday tourney in Rhode Island. Had the Tigers eked it out, it wouldâve been their sixth, which would have pushed them into a three-place tie with host Cumberland and Lincoln.
PROVIDENCE â One of the two suspended freshmen is back on Providence Collegeâs campus. Forward Rodney âRajayâ Bullock was a full-fledged participant at Fridayâs practice and will be part of the traveling party when the Friars head to Amherst to tango with nationally-ranked UMass on Saturday night.
CUMBERLAND â The executive director of the Cumberland Housing Authority has been disciplined after employees complained of her heavy-handed management style, officials say.
CHA Director Lee Ann Lamothe was placed on probation for 90 days and ordered to obtain specialized training in employee relations, said Richard S. Hilton, chairman of the Cumberland Housing Authority.
Lamothe was also placed on paid leave for 10 days while the commissioners investigated the complaints, between Nov. 21 and Dec. 9, said Hilton.
Leona J. Faille
CUMBERLAND- Leona J. Faille, 96, of Cumberland, passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2013. She was the wife of the late Clifford Faille.
Born on September 4, 1917 in Central Falls, she was the daughter of the late Mastai and Rosina (Patenaude) Brule.
Mrs. Faille was a secretary for Corning Glass for several years before retiring.
SWANSEA- Olivette "Jean" Petrasky, 86, of Mohill Avenue passed away Sunday December 22, 2013 at her residence with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late Bronislaw "Ben" Petrasky.
Born in Fall River, MA she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Annie (Dube) Lavallee. She lived in Swansea, MA for the past 9 months and formerly lived in South Attleboro, MA, for 38 years.
CUMBERLAND â Tolman High head coach Mike Kayata admitted to being less than ecstatic about his offense on Thursday night.
His defense, however, was a different story.
Excepting a lull early in the final stanza, that âDâ forced most of Lincolnâs 18 turnovers throughout the first half and down the stretch as the Tigers rolled to a 56-40 victory in the first semifinal of the 41st annual Boys & Girls Club of Cumberland/Lincoln Roadshow Holiday Classic at Cumberland Highâs Wellness Center.
