Recuperating Marine gets a helping hand for the holidays

PAWTUCKET — Marine Lance Corporal Charles Bradley joined the military with the best of intentions and served in Iraq as a helicopter mechanic. Yet, when he was honorably discharged five years later, he was a nervous and depressed single father who found himself suddenly unemployable.

In 2007, Bradley eventually found love again, marrying and presiding over a family of four. Yet, problems with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and other mental health issues have dogged him since, and contributed to the family’s financial struggles.

Tolman boys rout C.F. in Division II crossover opener

PAWTUCKET – Tolman High opened its season with a performance that both revealed the potential and the vulnerability of what appears to be a talented squad.
The Tigers roared to a 65-43 victory over Central Falls in a Division II crossover contest. The Tigers played a physical game, took the ball to the basket, looked for the fast break, and turned the ball over 22 times in their eagerness to push the ball up-court. They missed 16 of their 31 free throws.

Red Sox confident next PawSox manager will be in place by Christmas

PAWTUCKET — While the Red Sox are expressing confidence that the search to find the next PawSox manager will be wrapped up by Christmas, don’t be surprised if official word filters out before the holidays.

Why the organization has nothing to announce at this time is likely two-fold. While all signs point to current Double-A skipper Kevin Boles moving to the front lines of the minor-league system, the 38-year-old is presently coaching a winter league team in Venezuela, Bravos de Margarita.

S. Benjamin Pino

CUMBERLAND - S. Benjamin "Benny" Pino, 86, formerly of Meadowcrest Drive, passed away peacefully Friday at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence. He was the husband of Alzira "Elsie" (Coelho) Pino, and they had been married for the past 67 years.
Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Rosario and Angelina (Torre) Pino. He resided in Cranston for the past nine years, previously residing in Cumberland.
Mr. Pino was the owner of Benjamins III of Central Falls for over 30 years until his retirement in 1987.

CUMBERLAND - Felicidade F. (Fonseca) Cruz, 100 of High Street, passed away Friday at the Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of the late Belmiro "Bill" S. Cruz.
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, she was the daughter of the late Jose and Laura (Augusta) Fonseca. She resided in Cumberland for over 87 years. Mrs. Cruz was employed as a factory worker for the former Sydney Blumenthal Company for many years. She later practiced as a hairdresser for many years until her retirement.

Donald A. Billington

KILLINGWORTH - Donald A. Billington, 77, of Killingworth and formerly of South Windham, passed away peacefully Friday (December 6, 2013) at Middlesex Hospital. Born in Pawtucket, RI, he was the son of the late Celia E. (Forgette) Billington and Francis R. Billington. He recently moved to Killingworth, previously having resided in South Windham for close to 40 years.
