PAWTUCKET â€” It's a sad sign of the times when students tell their teachers that they don't get enough to eat on the weekends and other days that school isn't in session.
It's a problem that school officials have been aware of for years. However, when recent statistics showed that the city's average poverty level had increased substantially, the School Committee's Wellness Subcommittee decided to take action by launching a â€śBackpacks to Fight Hungerâ€ť initiative.
LINCOLN â€” Troop 711 Albion Scouts Gian DiCostanzo, Bryan Guilbert and Matthew LaButti were elevated to the rank of Eagle Scout at a High Court of Honor on Dec. 29 at St. Ambrose Church, Albion.
It was the 11th Eagle Court of Honor for Troop 711, which was founded in 2005.
DiCostanzo, Guilbert and LaButti represent the 17th, 18th and 19th Eagle Scouts for Troop 711.
DiCostanzo, the son of of Kim DiCostanzo and the late John DiCostanzo of North Smithfield, is a graduate of Mount Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket.
Mildred E. Godfrey
LINCOLN - Mildred E. (Bush) Godfrey, 96, of Front Street died Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Mount St. Rita's Health Centre, Cumberland. She was the wife of the late Melvin J. Godfrey.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, a daughter of the late George S. and Rosina (Norris) Bush, she had lived in Lincoln for the past 40 years.
Mrs. Godfrey was an executive secretary in the insurance industry before retiring.
Cheryl E. Wallace
PAWTUCKET - Cheryl E. (Cass) Wallace, 60, of Gill Avenue died Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Pawtucket Institute of Health, Pawtucket. She was the wife of the late Robert W. Wallace.
Born in Lynn, MA, a daughter of the late Richard and Charlotte (Holbrook) Cass, she had lived in Pawtucket for most of her life.
She was an active member and Past Worthy Matron of Queen Esther Chapter #2, Order of the Eastern Star, Pawtucket. She was an active member of Pawtucket Chapter of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls, and Bethany Baptist Church, Pawtucket.
David G. Maine, Jr.
COVENTRY - David G. Maine, Jr., 64, of Cantaberry Lane died at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, January 27, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Patricia J. (Silva) Maine.
Born in Pawtucket, a son of the late David G. and Alice T. (Cardosi) Maine, Sr., he moved to Coventry in 1977. He served during the Vietnam War in the United States Air Force.
Antero M. Borges
CUMBERLAND - Antero M. Borges, 84, died peacefully on Sunday, January 27, 2013 after an illness.
He is survived by his children Ann Marie Miguel, Christina Borges, Manuel Borges and Michael Borges and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was the father of the late Joseph Borges. He was the former husband of Frances (Dugal) Borges.
Sheila M. Smith
CUMBERLAND - Sheila M. Smith, 85, of Ronald Ave., passed away Sunday at home. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph L. Smith.
Born in Cumberland she was the daughter of the late Margaret Brannigan. She was a life long Cumberland resident.
Mrs. Smith and her late husband we communicants of St. John Vianney Church and had been very active at the church form many years.
Cora M. Duquette
PAWTUCKET - Cora M. (Choiniere) Duquette, 91, passed away Saturday, February 26, 2013. She was the beloved wife of the late Lucien "Duke" Duquette.
Born in Pawtucket, a daughter of the late Albert J. and Orilda
(Mayer) Choiniere, she resided in Central Falls before returning to Pawtucket many years ago. Cora was employed by Ann & Hope, Cumberland for twenty years until retiring.
Edward F. Philbin
CUMBERLAND - Edward F. Philbin, 85, of Albion Court, Lincoln and formerly of Cumberland passed away Friday surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth A. (Bailey) Philbin.
Born in Central Falls he was the son of the late Edward J. and Mabel (Johnson) Philbin. He lived in Cumberland most of his life.
Serafim E. Machado
PAWTUCKET - Serafim E. Machado, 80, passed at home on January 25th. He was the husband of Valdemira (Cota) Machado. They have been married for 53 years.
Born in Terceira, Azores, a son of the late Jose and Maria Machado.
He had been employed by Electric Boat of Quonset Point as a sheet metal mechanic for 18 years. He was a member of the Friends of Terceira.
