Cumberland looks to restore clipper sign

CUMBERLAND — Rusted and battered by years of exposure to the elements, the Cumberland High School clipper ship, the official high school mascot that has hung for years on the brick exterior of the school building, may be in line for a long overdue makeover.
At its meeting tomorrow, the School Committee will be asked to consider resolutions calling for the restoration and re-painting of the metal clipper ship.
The committee meets at 7 p.m. in the Cumberland High School Cafetorium, 2602 Mendon Road.

SBA chief meets with biz owners

CENTRAL FALLS — After officially becoming a member of President Barack Obama’s cabinet just last Friday, SBA Administrator Karen Mills visited Rhode Island Monday for a series of meetings in the Blackstone Valley.
Mills and her host, Rep. David Cicilline started the day at Tolman High School, meeting with local mayors and town administrators from Cicilline’s 1st Congressional district to tell them how her agency works with local cities and towns to strengthen their business community.

PAWTUCKET - Alexander H. Messier, 87, of Pawtucket, passed away Friday, January 20, 2012. He was the husband of Geraldine (Moseley) Messier. Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Alexander and Emily (Garreau) Messier. Mr. Messier was a lifelong resident of Pawtucket. He was a navy veteran of World War II.
He was a sales representative for Ford Aluminum Products for many years, retiring in 1991. He later worked as a starter at Stone E. Lea Golf Course for over twenty years.

CHEPACHET - George A. Robichaud, Jr., 56, of Chepachet passed away Monday at Philip Hulitar Hospice Center. He was the beloved husband of Kate M. (McIlmail) Robichaud for 33 years. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late George A. and Rita G. (Martel) Robichaud.
George was a Quality Control Manager for New England Paper Tube Co. in Pawtucket for 20 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He had a great sense of humor and a generous heart.

PAWTUCKET - Agnes E. Snow, 93, of Pawtucket passed away Monday, January 23, 2012, at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Francis J. Snow.
Mrs. Snow was born in Pawtucket, the daughter of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Shanley) Kirk. She was a kindergarten teacher in the Pawtucket School System at the Elizabeth Baldwin School for many years.

PAWTUCKET - G. Kenneth Juckett, 85, passed away Saturday, January 21, 2012. A lifelong resident of Pawtucket, he was a son of the late Oliver H. and Ethel M.(Mason) Juckett. Ken was a World War II and Korean War U.S. Navy veteran. He was a machinist for over thirty years at New England Machine and Electric, Pawtucket until retiring. Ken was a life member of the American Legion; member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and AMVETS.

Tolman gridders moving up to Division I

PROVIDENCE – The Woonsocket High School football program is staying put in Division II. In the case of Tolman High, Division I beckons after a successful stint in Division II.
Divisional alignments for several fall sports were ratified and approved at Monday’s meeting of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Principals' Committee on Athletics. In the case of football, Woonsocket will remain in Division II, a league where the Villa Novans have resided since the 2006 season.

Tolman girls go down to defeat

BURRILLVILLE --- After suffering its two most lopsided losses of the year late last week, Burrillville got back on track in a big way on Monday night in its Division II-North matchup against Tolman at the Broncodome.
Sophomore forward Victoria Libby overcame a bloody nose she suffered at the start of the second half to pour in 11 points, contribute 12 rebounds and four steals, and help the Broncos produce a foul-plagued 52-43 victory.

Krawetz found guilty

PROVIDENCE — Seconds after a Superior Court judge found Lincoln police officer Edward M. Krawetz guilty of felony battery with a dangerous weapon — in this case, his shod foot — the defendant's wife, Lori, wiped away tears.
Several other family members just looked around in disbelief after Justice Edward C. Clifton announced his decision at about 12:10 p.m., Monday.

City woman starts clothing drive to help homeless

PAWTUCKET — Having found her own path to a rewarding career in social work since immigrating from her native Colombia, Gloria Cardenas is now focusing on helping those less fortunate in her adopted hometown of Pawtucket.
With that in mind, Cardenas, along with family members and their friends, will be hosting a “Winter Clothing and Snack” event on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of Crown Collision Center, 180 Broadway, Pawtucket.
Anyone in need of winter clothing or shoes is invited to come by. Coffee, biscuits and other snack items will be available.

CUMBERLAND - Francis M. White, Sr., 67, of Mendon Rd., Cumberland, passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at home. He was the beloved husband for 39 years of Florence A. "Flo" (Chase) White. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Lester and Adeline (Whitman) White.
Francis worked in the food industry for many years before retiring.

Born in Cedros, Fayal, Azores, he came to the United States in 1969 and was employed as a maintenance man at Elizabeth Webbing Company. He was the son of the late Jose Silveira de Escobar and Filomena Emilia de Lacerda.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, Jeanne (Debooserie) Medeiros and daughter Jo Anne Medeiros of Pawtucket, sons Michael and wife Kim Medeiros of Cumberland, Paul Medeiros of Cranston, Jon Medeiros of Exeter and James Medeiros of New York. He leaves two grandchildren, Alyssa and Matthew Medeiros of Cumberland, as well as niece Kathy Pattison and nephew Joseph Medeiros.

PAWTUCKET - Lucien J. Lanctot, 83, passed away on January 23rd. He was the husband of Lillian (Lepage) Lanctot.
Born in Lincoln, he was a son of the late Louis and Clarinda (Gagnon) Lanctot.
Lucien had been employed by Haskall Manufacturing for 20 years.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, a life member of the DAV and VFW and also was a member of the Royal Travelers for 20 years.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 sisters, Louise, Doris and Claire, 5 brothers, Edward, Francis, Aldor, Joseph and Raymond Lanctot. He was the brother of the late Romeo and Leon Lanctot.

PAWTUCKET - William R. Whitmarsh, 77, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2012. A lifelong resident of Pawtucket, he was a son of the late William G. and Selma “Sal” C. (Maiwald) Whitmarsh.
Bill served in the RI Army National Guard. He was a cloth printer at Duro Printers, Fall River until retiring and was previously employed at Cranston Print Works. Bill was a drummer in his own three piece band many years ago.
He leaves his sister, Edith V. Courchene of Port Richey, Florida; his brother, Earl F. Whitmarsh of Hudson, Florida and four nephews.

KANSAS - Henry J. "Hank" Dumas, 85, of Hutchinson, Kansas, died January 20, 2012 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born November 9, 1926 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, the son of Joseph Y. & Roseanna Theroux Dumas. He attended school and graduated from high school in Pawtucket in 1944. He joined the U.S. Navy right out of school and served for 20 years.

ATTLEBORO - Claire A. Tetreault, 72, of Attleboro, surrounded by her family, passed away Thursday, January 19, 2012 at Norwood Hospital. Born in Central Falls, Rhode Island on May 29, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Leon and Pearl (Eliott) Marcotte of Central Falls, RI.
She attended Notre Dame Academy in Rhode Island and recently attended her 50th reunion in 2010. She was an active member of St. Stephen's Church and later Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, where she was proud to serve as a Eucharistic Minister and prayer chain member.

PAWTUCKET. Jose G. Dutra, of Oakland Avenue, passed away Saturday, after an illness. He was the husband of Armanda (Oliveira) Dutra.
He was born in Faial, Azores, a son of the late Jose Garcia and Maria Augusta (Dias) Dutra. Mr. Dutra has lived in Pawtucket for the last 29 years.
He had been employed in the maintenance department of the former Elizabeth Webbing Co. for several years before retiring.

PAWTUCKET - Claire J. Dyson, 87, of Benefit St. passed away Saturday at Pawtucket Health & Rehabilitation Center after an illness. She was the wife of the late David A. Dyson.
She was born in Central Falls, a daughter of the late Albert J. and Blanche H. (Chenail) Diggett. She had lived most of her life in Pawtucket. She had been employed in housekeeping at the former Carties Health Center.
