Dr. Melvin J. King

PAWTUCKET - Dr. Melvin J. King died on August 6, 2012 in Sturdy Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Caroline (Tefft) King.
Dr. King was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on October 8, 1922, the son of James and Edith (Hirst) King. He was the brother of the late Clifford King. In addition to his wife Caroline, Dr. King is survived by two daughters; Deborah J. King and her partner Mr. Lee Weissman of Fairfield, Connecticut, and Sara K. Papa and her husband John Papa of Avon, Connecticut, and two grandchildren; Alexandra K. Papa of Washington, DC and John Tyler Papa of Avon.

PAWTUCKET- Eldana P. Moussally, 86, of Leominster, MA, and formerly of Pawtucket, RI passed away Wednesday afternoon at the UMASS Medical University Campus unexpectedly after a brief illness surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Bradley, ME she was the daughter of the late Frank and Celena (Morin) Guay.
She was the wife of the late George T. Moussally.
Mrs. Moussally moved into Sunrise Assisted Living Community in Leominster, MA and enjoyed her golden years filled with friends and many activities.

Add Valencia to PawSox's logjam at third base

PAWTUCKET – On his first official day as a member of the Pawtucket Red Sox, Danny Valencia found himself out of Wednesday’s starting lineup. His placement under the “extra hitters” portion of the lineup card only furthers the argument that it’s going to be tough for the 27-year-old to carve out regular playing time.
Valencia is a third baseman by trade, a position where he’s logged 2,281 innings in 262 big-league games. Coming over from the Minnesota Twins via trade on Sunday, Valencia joins a PawSox ballclub that's pretty well stocked at the hot corner.

Edd Pedro's Wiffleball Tournament takes flight Sunday

PAWTUCKET -- Edd Pedro has only a few wants for his ninth annual “Fight for a Cure Mega-Raffle and Wiffleball Tournament,” slated to begin at 9 a.m., Sunday at Slater Park.
First and foremost, he’d love the day to be graced by good weather; second, he hopes to raise $20,000 to give to the Arthritis Foundation, with the New England regional headquarters stationed in Warwick; and, finally, he’d like for a few more teams to register for the tourney’s divisions, including Adult Competitive, “Just for Fun” and Youth (12-and-under).

On July 31 at Pawtucket City Hall, Director of Administration Antonio Pires, who also serves as the city's Public Safety Director, conducted a ceremony to swear-in a new firefighter and to promote two others on the Pawtucket Fire Department. 2 more medals for decorated vet

PAWTUCKET — Decorated veteran Maurice “Moe” Trottier has received two more service medals to add to his collection, thanks to a little help from Congressman David Cicilline.
On Tuesday, Cicilline presented the longtime Pawtucket resident with a Naval Reserve Medal and National Defense Service Medal during a short ceremony in his Main Street office. Trottier, who holds the rank of Private First Class, had earned the medals but never received them until now, 21 years after his retirement.

Teen accused of burning young relative with lighter

PAWTUCKET — A 13-year-old boy is accused of burning a two-year-old relative with a cigarette lighter while he and an adult couple were babysitting the little boy in a house on Bloomfield Street, Pawtucket Police said.
According to Major Arthur Martins, the victim had burn marks all over his neck, arm, back and groin. The boy's mother and the state Department of Children, Youth and Families reported the injuries to Pawtucket Police on July 30.

Metal plaque stolen from Leroy Theater monument

PAWTUCKET — In an unfortunate sign of the times and the thieving of anything that can be sold for scrap, a metal plaque commemorating the history and site of the former Leroy Theater has been stolen off of a stone monument at the corner of Exchange Street and Broad Street.

LAKE WORTH, FL - Roland L. Grenier Jr., 58, formerly of Falls River, KS died September 29, 2010 and was laid to rest in Lake Worth.
Born in Central Falls he was the son of the late Roland L. and Dora (Veins) Grenier Sr.
He leaves his children, Rebecca Grenier Kostacopoulas of Thompson, CT; Joseph Grenier of South Attleboro; Jennifer Grenier Taylor of Fredonia, KS; Jill Grenier of Cumberland and Jaclyn Grenier Letson of Mustang, OK.

DELTONA, FL - Roland L. Grenier Sr., 84, of Deltona and formally of Cumberland, RI lost his battle with lung cancer on Wednesday, August 1st home. He was the beloved husband of the late Dora (Viens) Grenier. They were married for 42 years.
Born in Pawtucket he was the son of the late Napoleon and Delina (Lamontagne) Grenier.
He leaves three children Elaine Pytka of Cumberland, RI; Debra A. Grenier-Anderson of Wichita, KS and Richard M. Grenier of Deltona, FL and a sister Doris Breault of Pawtucket, RI.

CENTRAL FALLS - Daniel Carreiro Furtado, 82 of Central Falls, died Monday, at Summit Commons Nursing Home in Providence, surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Noemia (Carreiro) Furtado.
Born in Pedreira, Nordeste, Sao Miguel, Azores, he was the son of the late Antonio Carreiro and Maria do Carmo (Mota) Furtado. Daniel came to the United States in 1967.

NORTH PROVIDENCE: Raymond A. Lague, 81, passed away on August 6th. He was the loving husband of Claire (Guindon) Lague. They have been married for 62 years.
Born in Central Falls, a son of the late Arthur and Eliane (Brousseau) Lague.
Raymond graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1949. He played professional baseball with the Boston Braves and Pittsburg Pirates AA Farm System.

CUMBERLAND - Thomas F. Almeida Sr., 65, of Duchess Rd. passed away Monday at home surrounded by family. He was the beloved husband of Suzanne (Baillargeon) Almeida.
Born in Pawtucket he was the son of Constance M. ( Mc Pherson) Almeida of Cumberland and the late Wenceslau S. Almeida Jr. He was a life long Cumberland resident.
Mr. Almeida was a partner in the law firm of Capineri & Almeida, Pawtucket for over 20 years until his retirement in 2008. He was also the Solicitor for the Town of Cumberland for 14 years under the Stetkiewicz and Gaschen administrations.

Schools must take deficit responsibility, says Grebien

PAWTUCKET — While saying that he intends to be open minded about hearing options at an upcoming meeting, Mayor Donald Grebien has made it clear that he thinks the School Department must take responsibility in addressing an unexpected deficit of $1.5 or more that has arisen as the 2012 school budget is being closed out.

Man arrested for violating new body armor law

PAWTUCKET — A Pawtucket man with convictions for attempted murder and narcotics charges in Puerto Rico was arrested by State Police Monday under a new law that makes it a crime to possess body armor after a crime of violence.
Antonio E. Limardo, 34, of 42 Webster St., was also in possession of a 9mm handgun, a knife and pepper spray, state police said.

Born in Providence, he was the son of Donald R. and Patricia A. (Perry) Lawrence of Pawtucket.
