'Old folks' Quigley-Inkster team share CVS lead

BARRINGTON — When 13-time LPGA Tour winner Juli Inkster discovered about two weeks ago that she would be paired with Champions Tour “Iron Man” Dana Quigley for the first round of the 14th annual CVS Caremark Charity Classic, she was ecstatic.
“I was really excited to be playing with Dana,” she said minutes after the two had mustered a birdie on the final hole on Monday afternoon. She then deadpanned, “I'm glad they put me with someone who can tolerate me for 18 holes.

Historical collection to be moved to Pawtucket Library

PAWTUCKET — It won't be quite the way she wanted it, but plans are underway to move Betty Johnson's vast Pawtucket history collection out of the basement of her Fruit Street house and into a safer and more secure location at the Pawtucket Public Library.

CUMBERLAND - Henriette E. Jovin, "Etta" 88, passed peacefully June 17th. She was the wife of the late Alfred D. Jovin Sr.
Born in New Bedford, MA, Etta was a daughter of the late Josephat and Eva (Benoit) Angers.
She had been employed by Hasbro Industries of Pawtucket for many years.
Henriette received many citations throughout her generous life of charity, she volunteered at many food banks was always kind to those in time of need.

Robert J. Neville, Sr.

PAWTUCKET - Robert J. Neville, Sr., 89, passed away Sunday, June 17, 2012. He was the beloved husband of Eva I. (Chabot) Neville, the couple would have celebrated their sixty-first wedding anniversary on June 23, 2012.
A lifelong resident of Pawtucket, he was a son of the late James L. and Alma (Stillwachs) Neville. Bob was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He was a printer at Highland Textile Printworks, Providence, for thirty-five years before retiring in 1983. Bob was an avid gardener; loyal Red Sox fan and a former member of the Royal Travelers.

SOUTH ATTLEBORO - Francoise (Croce) Shevchuk, 92, passed away Thursday, June 14, 2012. She was the beloved wife of the late Alexander A. Shevchuk.
Born in Septemes-les-Vallons, France, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Catherine (Alpe) Croce. Mrs. Shevchuk came to the United States from Marseilles, France in 1946 and settled in Pawtucket, she moved to South Attleboro in 1964. Mrs. Shevchuk was employed by the Fram Corporation, East Providence for forty years until retiring in 1980.

PAWTUCKET - Frank J. Pluta, 85, passed June 17, 2012. He was the husband of the late Mary (Medeiros) Pluta.
Born in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Stacia (Strzempek) Pluta. He resided the past 8 years at Blackstone Falls and previously was a longtime Pawtucket resident.
Frank had been employed by the former Almacs for many years. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 251. He was an Army WWII Veteran.

LINCOLN - Robert Fortunati, 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 16, 2012. Bob was born Roberto Guglielmo Fortunati, in Providence, to the late Fabio and Annuziata (DiSantis) Fortunati. Starting early in the tile business, he left for the US Army as a young man and was stationed in Germany. Once returning, he soon founded Crest Distributors, Inc., established in Central Falls, his most successful endeavor.

CUMBERLAND - Maria Irene Laires, 79, of Garvin St., passed away Saturday in the R. I. Hospital, Providence. She was the beloved wife of Antonio A. Laires.
Born in Porto, Portugal she was the daughter of the late Joao R. and Sara (da Conceicao) Ferreira. She came to this country in 1977 settling in Cumberland.
She was a devoted wife and mother and also a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Cumberland.

LINCOLN - Diana I. Smothers, 54, passed June 14th at home with her loving family by her side. She was the wife of Michael J. Smothers. They have been married for 20 years.
Born in Pawtucket, a daughter of Elaine McCreadie of Lincoln and the late Robert McCreadie Sr. Diana had dedicated her life to her family.

Tri-Force MMA's Jeffrey wins first main event fight

LINCOLN --- When Keith Jeffrey woke up last Friday morning, he had his sights set on producing an impressive performance later that night in the co-feature of Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc.’s “Proving Grounds” card at the Twin River Event Center.
Turns out that Jeffrey was successful in accomplishing that, but he ended up doing so in the main event, the first time in his career that he stepped into the limelight for the night’s grand finale.

Lincoln ends 22-0 season with first softball title

PROVIDENCE -- The drama stemmed not so much if Lincoln High would claim its first-ever state title in fast-pitch softball.
It instead revolved around whether junior phenom Lindsay Mayer would hurl a no-hitter while it doing so.
She didn’t, but that didn’t keep the Lions from a wild celebration after sealing a 4-1 victory over never-say-die Coventry High in the R.I. Division I Tournament championship tilt before a crowd of approximately 300 at Rhode Island College on Saturday afternoon.

But if you’re thinking that final game they’re getting ready for is the 14th annual Governor’s Cup showdown – the one that pits Rhode Island’s top seniors against Connecticut’s finest 12th graders – on June 30 in Southington, Conn., think again.

Geo. H. Fuller & Son acquired by Attleboro business

PAWTUCKET — A jewelry manufacturer that has sat on the banks of the Blackstone River at 151 Exchange Street for over 150 years has shut its doors for good after being acquired by an Attleboro, Mass. company.
The Geo. H. Fuller & Son Co., founded in 1858, had produced jewelry findings, fine jewelry and carbon fixtures for soldering at its Pawtucket mill. Earlier this spring, the company, also known as Fuller Findings, was acquired by Findings Incorporated, a jewelry manufacturer that has been in business since 1945.

Lincoln High confers 210 diplomas

LINCOLN – Lincoln High School’s class of 2012 marched into the future with words of reverence for great teachers and courageous alumni, plus a bit of guidance for weathering any adversity except, perhaps, the end of the world.

Frank Riley

PAWTUCKET - Frank Riley, 95, passed away peacefully at home in the presence of his family on Friday, June 15, 2012. He was the beloved husband of Idola (Ross) Riley for 69 years.
Born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, he was a son of the late Ernest and Mary Emma (Crossley) Riley. Frank was a World War II US Army veteran and worked as a master book binder for the J.C. Hall Co., Pawtucket, for 32 years until his retirement. Frank was a longtime volunteer and first aid instructor for the American Red Cross.

FLORIDA - MORRIS, Frank, Jr., 80, of Lakeland, Florida died Wednesday, June 6, 2012.
He was born in Pawtucket, RI, where he lived most of his life before moving to Florida.
He served in the U.S. Navy. He is survived by his daughter, Karen Ayers, of Florida; his sister, Genevieve Hervieux of East Providence; 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Pawtucket's Kelsey Fournier is Miss Rhode Island

PAWTUCKET — Kelsey Fournier spent the last three years rallying fans to cheer for the New England Patriots and now it's time for locals to return the favor and root for her. The 23-year-old Pawtucket native was recently crowned “Miss Rhode Island 2012” and will represent the Ocean State in the national Miss America competition in January.
