Races shaping up as deadline looms

PAWTUCKET — Mayor Donald Grebien, most incumbent members of the City Council and about half of the sitting School Committee have stated their intentions to run again while a few new names have surfaced as challengers as the deadline to declare for candidacy looms.

Enid Pappas, widow of Turning Point co-founder Michael Pappas, left, and co-founder Nicolas Retsinas, unveil a plaque recognizing the founders during a dedication ceremony in Pawtucket Saturday morning. The plaque is dedicated by members of the Board of Directors as an everlasting token of appreciation to deceased co-founders Dr. Gary P. Paparo and Michael Pappas as well as Nicolas P. Retsinas. Turning Point, a group home for boys, was originally started in 1973 as the Pawtucket Boys Club Group Home, and is currently located at 5 Kids Way in Pawtucket.

SEEKONK - Mary S. Pierce, 93, died Sunday, June 24th at Sturdy Memorial Hospital, Attleboro after an illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Vernon Pierce.
She was born in Lowell, MA the daughter of the late John and Mary (Silva) Ferreira. She grew up in Central Falls and lived much of her life in Pawtucket and Seekonk before moving to Attleboro.
She and her husband owned and operated Northeast Insulation Inc., for thirty years before retiring in 1986.
She leaves no immediate survivors but considered her many employees and caregivers as her family.

Lightning ignites house fire; dog dies

LINCOLN – A bolt of lightning from a front of storms passing through the area Monday morning is believed to have sparked a fire in the roof of a home at 1809 Old Louisquisset Pike and left a family of three temporarily homeless.
Mark Rodrigues said he son, Austin, 17, was home at the time of 10:50 a.m. strike and immediately called the fire department.
“The Fire Department said they heard a heavy bang in the area and then got the call,” Rodrigues said while looking over the aftermath of the fire at his home on Monday.

Kahn-Clary makes pro boxing debut Friday in R.I.

PAWTUCKET — A strange thing happened to Toka Kahn-Clary on his way to making his pro debut earlier this month.
The Pawtucket junior lightweight was ready to debut in style — on the June 8 undercard of the marquee Kelly Pavlik-Scott Sigmon super middleweight fight at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. He put in a strong training camp at Manfredo’s Gym. He and his opponent, Ivan Castellanos, easily made their weight. His fight was going to air live on ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights” and a lot of his family members and friends back in Rhode Island were going to get to view it.

PAWTUCKET - Edith E. (Hey) Brennan, 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 24, 2012. She was the former wife of the late James E. Brennan.
Born in Cumberland, she was a daughter of the late John and Lucinda(Cowdell) Hey.
Edith was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Pawtucket F.O.P. Lodge # 4, and enjoyed sewing and knitting.

LINCOLN - Ina R. Sanville, 80, of Franklin St, passed on June 24th with her loving daughter by her side. She was the wife of the late Wallace Sanville.
Born in Central Falls, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Loretta (Dyke) Trottier.

CENTRAL FALLS - Anna T. Malec, 94, passed away Friday June 22, 2012 at the Grandview Center in Cumberland. She was the beloved wife of the late Anthony F. Malec.
Born in Central Falls she was a daughter of the late Wincenty K. and Rozalia (Karolczuk) Bialkowska-Nasal. She was a life long resident of Central Falls.
Before retiring Anna was employed as a Billing Clerk for the former Sidney Blumenthal Textile Co. and later was a co-owner, Secretary and Treasurer of the former Town and Country Gardens and Landscaping Co.

NO. PROVIDENCE Amada R. Espinal, 85, formerly of No. Providence and Central Falls, entered into eternal rest Saturday, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Carlos E. Espinal.
She was born in Medellin, Colombia, a daughter of the late Jesus Giraldo and Julia Sabala and had migrated to the United States in 1979 and had lived in Central Falls, Pawtucket and No. Providence. She had been employed at the former Healthtex Mfg. and also was a childcare provider.

PAWTUCKET: Theresa "Terry" Allard, 84, passed June 24th at home with her loving daughter by her side. She was the wife of the late Maurice Allard. She was a longtime Pawtucket resident before moving to Blackstone Falls 12 years ago
Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Aurore (Chartier) Desorcy.

Council OKs re-use of mill, growth center plan

PAWTUCKET — A zoning change that will allow for the re-use of the American Insulated Wire complex for residential apartments and commercial enterprises was given first passage by the City Council at Wednesday night's meeting.
The amendment to the city's zoning map will be done by an overlay pertaining only to the 6-acre parcel of land at 413 Central Ave. that is the site of the former American Insulated Wire company. A developer wants to turn the mill buildings on the property into one- and two-bedroom rental units, while the ground floor will be leased to commercial tenants.

Sandusky found guilty of sexual abuse

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) — Jerry Sandusky was convicted Friday of sexually assaulting 10 boys over 15 years, accusations that shattered the Happy Valley image of Penn State football and led to the firing of Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno.
Sandusky, a 68-year-old retired defensive coach who was once Paterno's heir apparent, was found guilty of 45 of 48 counts.

Statue of late owner completes Mondor Gardens

PAWTUCKET — As tranquil and serene Mondor Gardens is, something was missing. That “something” was a remembrance designed specifically to preserve the memory of late Pawtucket Red Sox owner Ben Mondor.
Upon agreeing that a statue would prove fitting, PawSox President Mike Tamburro and General Manager Lou Schwechheimer reached out to the only person they felt would capture Mondor in the light that would display his affinity for PawSox baseball.
Turns out that someone was a familiar face – Carol “Tayo” Heuser, a lady whose artistic talents are on display throughout McCoy Stadium.

Russell heads into final day with Northeast lead

EAST PROVIDENCE — Recent Texas A&M University graduate Jordan Russell had just finished what he deemed an inconsistent round of two-over-par 71 at Wannamoisett Country Club on Friday afternoon, and was less than thrilled with the outing.
He nevertheless remained two strokes ahead of his closest competitors at the 51st annual Northeast Amateur Invitational Golf Tournament.

Born and raised in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Beloved husband of 53 years to Patricia. Loving dad of Pamela, Jamei, Mary and Peter (Aliza). Proud grandpa of Sophia and Max. Dearest brother of Helen Golden, Melbourne, FL and William (Gerry) Tierney, Hartford, CT.
Preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Margaret, and sister, Elizabeth Carpenter, Pawtucket, RI; survived by many nieces and nephews. He was a Korean War Army Veteran.

PAWTUCKET- Phyllis H. Braga, 74, passed away Friday June 22, 2012 at her residence with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of Joseph C. Braga.
Born in Seekonk she was a daughter of the late Joseph S. and Helen (Kalinowski) Matonis. She lived in Pawtucket for the past 10 years and was formerly of North Attleboro.
