CUMBERLAND â Saying the stakes could not be higher, Mayor Daniel J. McKee has called on the Town Council and the community to recommit to investing in public education, saying restoring Cumberland as a top ranked school district is about much more than budget dollars.
âThis is not only an educational journey we're talking about here, it's also a political and economic journey and that's where the Town Council, mayor's office and community are going to have to get engaged,â McKee told the council at last week's public hearing on his proposed $82.8 town operating budget for fiscal 2013.
PROVIDENCE: Derick Lee Rua, "Chach" 26, passed on May 25th.
Born in Pawtucket, a son of James A. and Yemi Rua.
He was the proprietor of Area 4zero1 and had also been employed by Footlocker for many years. Chach was an avid soccer player. He and his store was well known as the provider of the most stylish fashions in his community.
CUMBERLAND - Maria A. (Ferreira) Bento, 89, formerly of Vineyard Avenue, passed away Monday in the Pawtucket Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation, Pawtucket. She was the wife of the late Fernando Bento.
Born in Figueiro da Serra, Gouveia, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Abel and Maria (Ferreira) Cardoso She moved to this country in 1967, settling in Pawtucket, and later residing in Cumberland for 32 years.
Mrs. Bento was employed as a Machine Operator for the Rhode Island Textile Company for many years until her retirement.
LINCOLN - HARRISON, Margaret E. (Gormley), 94, of Lower River Road, passed away Sunday in the Friendly Home, Woonsocket. She was the wife of the late John E. Harrison.
Born in Norwich, CT, she was the daughter of the late John and Margaret (Quinn) Gormley. She resided in Lincoln for many years, previously residing in North Providence and Burrillville.
Margaret was a graduate of the Norwich Free Academy in Norwich, CT, and a graduate of the St. Joseph School of Nursing in Providence.
PAWTUCKET - Barbara Ethier, 78, of Pawtucket, passed away Friday, May 25, 2012. She was the wife of Robert Ethier.
Born in Central Falls, she was the daughter of the late William and Anna (Kianka) Rogers. She had lived most of her life in Pawtucket.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Lori Moreau, and Holly Walker, five sons, Kim, Marc, Scott, Robert, and Jason Ethier, a step-daughter, Roberta Berry, two step brothers, Sonny and Robert Decesare, 17 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Jose do Albuqueque Amaral
CUMBERLAND - Jose do Albuqueque Amaral, 97 of Promontory Knoll, passed away peacefully Friday May 25, surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Rosa C. (Ferreira) Amaral for 65 years.
Born in Esmolfe, Portugal, he immigrated to this country in 1950, settling in Cumberland. He was responsible for bringing his two brothers, sister and their families to the United States.
Mr. Amaral was employed as Carpenter for the Standard Nut and Bolt, for 35 years retiring in 1990.
He was a communicant of the Our Lady of Fatima Church, Cumberland.
