Lincoln couple continues efforts to honor veterans

LINCOLN — Eddie and Patty Fox had been familiar with Wreaths Across America's work over the years to recognize the courage and sacrifices of our veterans, but it wasn't until last year that the couple began to think about how their home town of Lincoln could assist the mission.
The Foxes were the driving force behind the effort last year to raise money for a Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which was dedicated at the Lincoln Senior Center on May 21, 2011.
"It was a huge ceremony and over 400 people attended," said Patty.

Councilors criticize Pires for his tone

PAWTUCKET — Saying they didn't appreciate the “political” tone, several City Councilors on Wednesday publicly criticized Director of Administration Antonio Pires and, indirectly, Mayor Donald Grebien, for some recent communications sent to the council.

NEWPORT - Helene Anne Rebello died recently at home after a long illness. She was the daughter of Helene (Kent) Rebello and the late Frank A Rebello Sr.
Survivors include two sisters Doreen R. Tracey of Gloucester R.I, Celeste Locke of Cumberlad R.I. and one brother Frank A Rebello Jr of Providence, R. I. She leaves a son, Everett Johnson and a long time companion, Daniel Rose of Newport R.I.
A private service will be held later.

PAWTUCKET- Julia J. "Judy" McKnight, 96, formerly of Melrose Avenue, Pawtucket passed away on Thursday, December 6, 2012. She was the wife of the late Charles "Chic" McKnight.
Mrs. McKnight was born in Nashua, New Hampshire, the daughter of the late John Akstin and Louise (Elkavich) McKnight. She was employed by the Dennison Company for many years.

PAWTUCKET- Gomes, Clarisse (Silva), 55, of Thornley St. died suddenly December 6, 2012 at Pawtucket Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Alvaro Gomes.
Born in Praia, Cape Verde, a daughter of the late Manuel and Maria (Balla) Silva.
Besides her husband she leaves three children Maria J. Bouchard, John M. Gomes and Alvaro Gomes Junior all of Pawtucket. Two sisters Maria Bouchard of Pawtucket and Belinda Pina of Georgia. Four brothers Jose, John, Paul and Reinaldo Silva all of Pawtucket. Sixteen nieces and nephews and two grandchildren Samantha and Noah Gomes.

CUMBERLAND- DaRosa, Antonio F., 87, of Cumberland died December 6, 2012 at Fatima Hospital. He was the husband of the late Irma (Correia) DaRosa.
He was born in S. Lorenco, Fogo, Cape Verde. He was son of the late Francisco and Rosa Faria (Fonseca) DaRosa.
He came to this country 27 years ago settling in Pawtucket. Antonio was a self-employed photographer for all of his life until his retirement in 13 years ago. He was a member of Mount Hope Community Baptist Church.

Friars pull away from Rams, 72-57

PROVIDENCE - The game changed on an alley-oop.
Rhode Island freshman Jordan Hare rose above the Providence College defense to emphatically finish a perfectly executed play with 15 minutes, 22 seconds left in the second half to cut the Friars' lead to five.
As it turned out, the alley-oop was the best thing that happen to PC because Friar coach Ed Cooley opted to eschew his zone defense against the athletic Rams and play man-to-man. Over the next 8 minutes, 21 seconds the Rams didn't make a basket, went 0-for-8 from the field and committed six turnovers in a 72-57 defeat.

PROVIDENCE – Dan Hurley spent time under the same roof as one of his former high school players Thursday night. In his private moments, the URI head coach was probably thrilled that Sidiki Johnson was sitting on Providence’s bench wearing a sharp black suit rather than basketball attire.
