At the end of day, high school sports are not based on which teams are successful and which ones arenâ€™t. Their very existence is predicated on providing teenagers with a level playing field rooted in fair competition.
If winning a championship happens to accompany what should be an enriching experience, thatâ€™s pure gravy. If not, the question that needs asking is whether the experience provided was rewarding from a â€śfair fightâ€ť standpoint.
CUMBERLAND â€” Steve Gordon canâ€™t help but smile when recalling the images of his Cumberland High matmen celebrating their second title in three years at the R.I. Interscholastic Wrestling Championships last Feb. 25.
They did so on the stellar moves of then-senior captain Tom Lacroix, who represented the Clippers in the 195-pound weight class at the event finals, held at the Providence Career & Technical High School field house.
Wanda R. Lass
LINCOLN/CUMBERLAND - Wanda R. Lass, 92 formerly of Lincoln and Cumberland, died Sunday at Greenwood Care Center, Warwick. She was the wife of the late Leo J. Lass.
Born in Fall River, MA, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Rozalia (Labecki) Kulacz.
Her son Walter "Skipp" Lass of Warwick and his wife Christine; her sister Leora Kulacz of Cranston, granddaughters Elizabeth Lass of Santa Cruz, CA and Erika Lass of Warwick survive her.
She was the sister of the late Julian, John and Raymond Kulacz, Angelina Wojick, Mary Chabot and Stacia Kulacz.
Rita F. Stebenne
CENTRAL FALLS, RI - Rita "Chick" F. (Robidou) Stebenne, 91, of Central Falls passed away unexpectedly Saturday December 1, 2012 at Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket. She was the devoted wife of the late Charles J. Stebenne. Rita was born in Central Falls the daughter of the late Charles and Robertine (Vincent) Robidou.
Gerald P. Brodeur
CUMBERLAND - Gerald P. Brodeur of Owen drive, Cumberland died December 1, 2012 at his daughters home in Cumberland surrounded by his family. Mr. Brodeur was the husband of the late Edna (Ferguson) Brodeur.
He was born in Central Falls the son of the late Paul and Laura (Tetreault) Brodeur. He was a heavy equipment operator for Walsh Contracting for many years, retiring in 1990.
Mr. Brodeur was in the United States Army, serving in Germany from 1950-1953. Mr. Brodeur was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 10.
Joyce L. Desjardins
CUMBERLAND - Joyce L. Desjardins (Case), 72, of Mendon Rd. passed away Sunday in the Memorial Hospital, Pawtucket. She was the beloved wife of the late Russell Desjardins.
Born in Central Falls she was the daughter of the late Ivan W. and Mary L. (Donahue) Case. She was a life long Cumberland resident.
Mrs. Desjardins was employed in the Medical Records Department at Sturdy Memorial Hospital for 8 years until her retirement. Previously she and her husband operated the former Pete's Market on High Street.
PAWTUCKET - Josephine Sabbagh, 95, of Pawtucket, passed away Sunday, December 2, 2012. Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Farrah) Sabbagh. Josephine was a garment inspector for Health-Tex.
She is survived by one sister, Margaret Hanna, one brother, Samuel Sabbagh, and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Rose Domaney and Nedeh Kanakry.
Yolanda V. Foley
PAWTUCKET - Yolanda V. Foley, 91, originally of Pawtucket passed away peacefully on December 1, 2012 at the Steere House in Providence, RI. She was the beloved wife of the late William A. Foley, retired Lieutenant, Pawtucket Fire Department.
NORTH SMITHFIELD - Kelley, Frances, 77, of North Smithfield and formerly of Newport and Pawtucket, passed away Thursday, November 29, 2012.
Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Kathleen (Ward) Kelley. She had lived most of her life in Pawtucket before moving to Newport in 1998. She graduated from Elmhurst Convent of the Sacred Heart, Providence and Emmanuel College, Boston. Frances was a School Teacher in the Providence School Department for thirty years before retiring.
Nora J. Laliberte
PAWTUCKET - Nora J. Laliberte, 85, passed on November 30, 2012. She was the wife of Ted J. Laliberte.
She was the daughter of the late John and Maria (Brigliapori) Molinari.
Besides her husband she is survived by a daughter, Joni Payne and her husband Peter of Seekonk, MA.
