Venagro wins 2012 World Miss Fitness America title

EAST PROVIDENCE — Stacie Wildenhain Venagro sat at a counter inside the Shake It Up Fitness & More studio, where she works as a part-time cardio kickboxing and “Boot Camp” instructor, thumbing threw photos of her at the Golden Nugget Casino & Hotel in Las Vegas on Saturday, Nov. 17.
She hadn't flown out west for the more typical reasons – gambling and/or taking in a show or two. Instead, the 27-year-old Pawtucket native wanted to partake in the 2012 World Miss Fitness America Pageant.

City swears in five police officers

PAWTUCKET — As 2012 winds down, five new police officers were added to the Pawtucket Police Department to fill vacancies that have occurred through attrition.
In a quiet ceremony at Pawtucket City Hall on Wednesday, the five officer candidates, who all graduated earlier that day from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy, were sworn in by Director of Administration/Public Safety Director Antonio Pires. Pires explained that Mayor Donald Grebien, could not attend due to an illness.

Council vote puts whitetails in crosshairs

LINCOLN — Local deer could soon be the targets of hunters following a 3-2 Town Council vote allowing archery hunting as a way to reduce the town’s growing deer population.
The hunting season measure worked out by the Council’s ordinance committee came up before the five-member full panel for action without a recommendation but was approved with Council President Keith Macksoud, and council members Kenneth Pichette and Arthur Russo in favor and members James Jahnz and John Flynn opposed.

REHOBOTH - Nancy Marion (Hartley) Vine, 70, of Hillside Avenue, Rehoboth, passed away unexpectedly at her residence on Saturday, December 15, 2012. She was the former wife of Donald V. Vine of North Dighton.
Born in Central Falls, Rhode Island on December 8, 1942, she was a daughter of the late David and Mildred C. (Gould) Hartley. Raised and educated in Pawtucket, Ms. Vine was a 1960 graduate of the former Pawtucket West High School.

PROVIDENCE – Now that the fog has dispersed and Providence College along with the rest of its Catholic school brethren have succeeded in making a clean break from the Big East, now seems as good a time as any to raise the question of just how appealing a basketball-centric conference is in the eyes of potential recruits.
To that end, PC head coach Ed Cooley feels that the Catholic Seven and the still-to-be-determined additional schools have an excellent shot to thrive and prosper due to basketball serving as the main draw at every institution.

Police nab another package thief

PAWTUCKET— Unfortunately, 'tis the season for robberies of package deliveries.
On Tuesday, Pawtucket Police arrested a city man for committing such a crime —the second incident in five days.
According to Major Arthur Martins, on Tuesday at approximately 1:15 p.m., Pawtucket Police received a call from a resident who noticed a male removing a box from the porch of a house on Grand Avenue. The witness provided police with a description of the suspect and of the box he was carrying. Several officers arrived in the Grand Avenue area and a suspect was found on London Avenue.

PAWTUCKET — With both she and her husband being of Polish heritage, it was always natural for Jean Babiec to celebrate Christmas Eve with a “Wigilia” meatless menu. She made sure to purchase the “oplatek” and always set the dinner table with a pure white tablecloth and one extra place setting, with some pieces of hay placed under it.
