Council-less Friars post 81-49 victory over Bryant

November 12, 2012

PROVIDENCE — Deep down, Ed Cooley knows that it’s probably not the best time to take his Providence Friars on a two-games-in-three-days junket in Puerto Rico.
Still, this is no time to convey weakness, which the second-year PC head coach clearly understands.
As Cooley emphatically stated following PC’s surprisingly easy 81-49 throttling of Bryant on Monday night, the show must go on – even if it’s without the services of senior point guard Vincent Council (hamstring).

Islanders rout Tigers for Div. III girls' soccer crown

November 12, 2012

PROVIDENCE — Tolman High head coach Bel Pereira received the astonishingly bad news at about 2:30 p.m., Monday, about 90 minutes before his Tigers would battle top-seeded Middletown in the R.I. Division III Tour-nament's championship game at Rhode Island College.
That's when he learned two of his top three goal producers and forwards/midfielders, senior Nicole Bedoya and sophomore Suzette Hernandez, wouldn't be able to play. Bedoya had been in a car accident on Saturday night, and Hernandez continued to suffer symptoms of a concussion.

New England GOP decline continues

November 12, 2012

PROVIDENCE (AP) - The election could not have gone much worse for Republicans in New England.
GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, did not capture a single electoral vote here. Sen. Scott Brown, who electrified Republicans with his upset victory in a January 2010 special election to succeed the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, was cast aside by Massachusetts voters in favor of Democrat Elizabeth Warren.

On June 23, The Times published a photograph of a Quonset hut housing a USNR training center that used to stand at 1 Moeller Way in Pawtucket. That site is now home to the Pawtucket Boys and Girls Club. After that photo appeared, a man named Stanley Kumiega, originally from Central Falls and now living in Cumberland, came in to show us this photo taken of the Naval Reserves Division 1-36 taken in front of the facility in June 1964.
