DENVER — In a showdown at close quarters, President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney sparred aggressively in their first campaign debate Wednesday night over taxes, deficits and strong steps needed to create jobs in a sputtering national economy. "The status quo is not going to cut it," declared the challenger.
Obama in turn accused his rival of seeking to "double down" on economic policies that actually led to the devastating national downturn four years ago — and of evasiveness on details for Romney proposals on tax changes, health care, Wall Street regulation and more.

ACLU files Supreme Court petition seeking recount

PROVIDENCE — On Monday as promised, ACLU attorney Armando Batastini filed a petition in Rhode Island Supreme Court on behalf of candidate Carlos Tobon asking for the court to order the state Board of Elections to conduct a manual recount of all precinct, mail and provisional ballots for the House District 58 Democratic primary.

PAWTUCKET - Yvette M. Fortin, age 83, died peacefully at the Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island, Tuesday, October 2, 2012 surrounded by her family. She was the beloved and devoted wife of the late Arcade J. Fortin.
Mrs. Fortin was born in Pawtucket, the daughter of the late Philippe and Juliette (Martin) Bertrand and was a lifelong city resident. She was a proud homemaker, an avid BINGO player and a big fan of Wheel of Fortune.

Instead, head coach Pierre Ridore and his Raiders had to settle for a 2-2 stalemate against a squad that before it took to the pitch had sat in first place by a mere point over second-place Barrington.

Police charge two area men with armed robbery

WOONSOCKET – Two men who were already facing charges in connection with a string of house breaks in Lincoln and North Smithfield have been linked to the armed robbery of a Social Street liquor store in July.
Max Charlemagne, 26, of Pawtucket, and Christopher Noel, 31, of Lincoln, were arraigned Tuesday in District Court on charges of first-degree robbery and conspiracy. They were ordered held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions.
Police say the men robbed JB Liquors in broad daylight on July 11, making off with $600 in cash.

Doherty unveils new energy plan

PAWTUCKET - Doris Collette, 83, a lifelong resident of Pawtucket, passed away Friday, September 28, 2012. She was the wife of the late Leo J. P. Collette.
Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late Adelard and Aldea (Ferland) Blain. Doris was a secretary and treasurer for Duffy's Auto for 27 years.
She is survived by a daughter, Lorraine Knight, two grandchildren, Brenda Burns and John Knight, and two great grandchildren, Briana and Caroline Knight. She was the sister of the late Gerard, Roland, and Philip Blain.

All in a day's work for photo contest winners

PAWTUCKET — The winners of the 14th annual City of Pawtucket Photo Contest were announced at the Blackstone Valley Visitors Center on Saturday.
This year's theme was “All in A Day's Work,” and the winning entries reflected the different interpretations that each photographer had of that idea.
The photographs will be reprinted on a 2013 City of Pawtucket calendar that will be published by the city administration.

Cash-strapped CF gets bucket truck from AT&T

CENTRAL FALLS — The Department of Public Works is offering up a bucketful of thanks to some friendly folks at the AT&T Corporation who gave the cash-strapped city a used bucket truck free of charge.
Joseph Nield, Central Falls Director of Public Works, said that about six months ago, it was discovered that the city's lone bucket truck, a 1989 model, was going to need about $15,000 in repair work to its extension boom to pass the annual safety inspection. Given that the truck is 18 years-old, Nield said it didn't seem worth fixing even if the city did have the available funds.

Claire is survived by her sister Aline Crawford; two nephews Denis and David Murphy; and one great niece Klaudia Rogers.

He was born on May 10, 1987, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the son of Jose Olimpio DePina and Margarida Xavier-DePina. He was the second eldest son of three boys and one girl.
He is survived by his parents, Jose Olimpio DePina and Margarida Xavier-DePina, his sister, Dilce Lawson, his brothers, Joseph and Danny DePina and his loving grand parents, aunts, uncles, nephews and cousins.

JOHNSTON - Elsie E. Conner, 93, died on September 30, 2012 at Morgan Health Center. She was born in Central Falls, RI. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Eva (Major) Conner. She worked at Pawtucket Memorial Hospital in the Maternity ward for 50 years until her retirement in 1999 where she was affectionately known as Red. She was a member of Smithfield Ave. Congregational Church.
She is survived by 1 nephew David Bardsley of New York, 1 niece Nancy O'Brien of Johnston, 1 great-niece, 1 great-great-niece and 1 great-great-nephew.

CUMBERLAND - John F. Fanning, 64, of Eddy Street, passed away Thursday in the Philip Hulitar Center, Providence.
Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Francis J. and Madeline A. (Hunt) Fanning. He was a resident of Cumberland, and Craftsbury, VT.
John was a retired steamfitter for over 40 years, working out of Local 51, previously Local 476 of Rhode Island. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman.
He was a member of the Cumberland Beagle Club.

Times' Jingle Mingle to benefit Merry Christmas Fund

PAWTUCKET — Get out your red and green party wear and shine up those dancing shoes. The Times, in conjunction with Grupo Amigos Da Terceira, is hosting a “Jingle Mingle” to benefit the Times “Merry Christmas Fund.”
The holiday dance event is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 1, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Community Center Grupo Amigos Da Terceira, Inc. at 55 Memorial Drive in Pawtucket. Music will be provided by Mega's DJ Music Productions., and the ticket price includes a buffet. A cash bar will also be available.
