Grebien orders spending freeze

PAWTUCKET — Facing an unexpected deficit of $2.3 million that is sure to be compounded by a recent judge's decision regarding health benefits of retired school employees, Mayor Donald Grebien announced Friday that he has reinstituted a freeze on all city spending.
Grebien issued an announcement late Friday afternoon saying that he will require prior approval on a case-by-case basis before any city money can be spent.

ATTLEBORO - Athanasios G. Dafulas, 75 of Emory Street Attleboro, died Sunday at the Miriam Hospital in Providence.
He was the husband of Elaine (Papavasiliou) Dafulas.
He was born in Malakasi, Greece, a son of the late George & Haido ( Papalexiou) Dafulas.
He was a veteran of the US Army serving as a Corporal.
Mr. Dafulas was a Toolmaker and Machinist for the L.G. Balfour Company for over 45 years, before he retired 10 years ago.
Mr. Dafulas has lived in Attleboro for over 55 years coming from Greece.

PAWTUCKET: Lucille M. (Lussier) Massé, 80, died peacefully January 13, 2012 at Brentwood Nursing Home in Warwick, RI. Formerly of Hunts Avenue in Pawtucket, she was the beloved wife of the late Bertrand G. Mass to whom she was married for fifty years. Born March 24, 1931 in Central Falls, Rhode Island, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Lussier and Bernadette Lussier (Duplessie).

NORTH PROVIDENCE - William "Bill" G. Bebeau, 52, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 12, 2012. Born in Pawtucket, he was a son of Dorothy M. (Audette) Poole and her husband, Norman of Pawtucket and the late Edward W. Bebeau. Bill resided in Pawtucket until moving to North Providence in 1999.
He had been a supervisor for Nordson EFD for many years and enjoyed mountain biking.

Cumberland considering all-day kindergarten

CUMBERLAND — A study group assembled to perform an in-depth review of the feasibility of all-day kindergarten in Cumberland public schools is expected to report its findings by the end of the month.
The district has been talking about instituting full-day kindergarten since the fall and the arrival at that time of new School Superintendent Philip Thornton, a supporter of full-day kindergarten. Thornton made a formal public presentation on the merits of an all-day program at the School Committee's meeting Dec. 8.
