PAWTUCKET – As his players danced to loud music while taking swigs of beer in the other room, Arnie Beyeler stood in the manager’s office, his t-shirt completely soaked after several players cornered him near the visitors dugout and dumped beer all over him.
The fruits of victory are sweet if you’re the Pawtucket Red Sox. The locals clinched the I.L. North Saturday night after rallying for a 12-7 victory past Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The division title is the franchise’s first since 2003 and the fifth since 1991, when division play was introduced in the International League.

Cops: Accused RI rep said he paid bills with funds

PROVIDENCE (AP) — A state legislator charged with misappropriating funds from a life insurance policy on his friend's dead daughter told investigators he used some of the money to pay his business' bills, according to court papers.
State Rep. Leo Medina, a freshman Democrat from Providence, is accused of pocketing $28,000 from a life insurance policy that he was helping his friend cash in. Medina told investigators he paid Alejandro Nico $6,200 to $6,400 but used some of the money to pay bills for his struggling business, according to an affidavit written by a state police detective.

Whiting out on bail; suspended without pay

NORTH PROVIDENCE — Col. John J. Whiting, the town's police chief and a former Pawtucket Police major, was released on bail but remains suspended without pay following his arraignment on Thursday on felony charges that he stole $714 out of a vehicle involved in a police chase and then asked Pawtucket Police to cover it up.
